Title: Is my tank bag going to fly off?
Post by: paradoqs on November 30, 2012, 09:17:03 AM
I just got a Cycle Case brand magnetic tank bag off of ebay. It seems very new, only slightly used. It is the smallest one and it fits on my GS tank well. However, it doesn't seem like the magnets are all that strong. It's not difficult to lift the bag off the tank like I would imagine it should be. Is this normal? Or is my bag going to fly off at high speeds.

Which exact model did you get? It'd help knowing that, to look up reviews and such. In any case, most magnetic tank bags are engineered so they don't fly off even at highway speeds, at least with reputable brands.

You could always email Cycle Case, tell them you bought their bag, and ask what testing they did--or at least how well they think the bag will hold up. Since they built it, it follows that they should know it inside out :)

It would so make a difference on which GS you have (E or F)

2002 GS500E. I believe this is the bag

The magnets are covered to help avoid scratching I guess. Gonna take it for a ride and see what happens.

Looks like a good tank bag.  Are the magnets just in the wings on the side? or are there magnets in the bottom center as well?

My mag tank bag only had magnets in the middle. It didn't budge at almost 100mph on my naked bike. There isn't a lot of wind down there. You should be fine.

Maybe try a test run with something in the bag you don't mind losing, and then if it flies off you could return it. Also, for peace of mind you could always pick up some rare earth magnets like these: http://www.magnet4less.com/index.php?cPath=13 and sew or duct tape them into the bottom of the bag.

The bag worked fine at both high speed on the pavement and lower speed on gravel. There are magnets in the middle and on the side flaps. It must just not get much wind down there because the magnets seem to hold fine.

Doesn't it come with a strap to go through your handlebars?

No, there is no strap nor any place where it looks like a strap would have been.
