Title: Winter riding problem? Strange ticking
Post by: Alphad0g on November 30, 2012, 09:26:21 AM
So, as it's been getting colder down here in Louisiana, I haven't been doing much riding until I picked up something to bundle up with.

Recently, when I start the bike and let her warm up for 10-15 minutes, I hear a strange ticking sound, about once every 10-15 seconds, accompanied by a slight drop in rpms, which picks right back up afterwards. After I ride for a bit, it will still do it at stoplights/signs but only on occasion.

I am confus.

It's not affecting performance, but it's got me worried.

EDIT: Feex'd for spelling.

Advice?

Where's the sound coming from? You could watch for it while putting your ear to different parts of the bike, that might make it easier to troubleshoot.

I'll have to try that before I go riding later.

Some have described that as "lean misfire".  Does this happen when using full choke?  Any intake/exhaust mods?  Stock jets?

I would say it has something to do with your valve clearances or the cam shaft chain/tensioner.  When was the last time the valves been checked?
