Hey everyone,
So I need a bit of help wiring up my new oem tach (actually brand new in box!) to my bike. Here is what I'm dealing with:

I've got a few questions:
1) why is there a second bulb/what does it go to? Is there a bulb wired into my mechanical tach that goes to an indicatior light?
2) Where do all these various wires go? I assume I'll have to take the wires out of the connector and put on male and female end terminals, but I have no clue where anything should plug into.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The bulb harness has the lights for the tach and the speedo.
Black/red: tach input signal
Orange: +12
black/white: Ground
Gray: also +12
so should I run the +12 right off of the battery, or is there a better place to tap into?
and for the tach input signal, I just wire it into one of the coils? Does it matter which side of the coil I wire it into?
Thanks much.
Graham
PS, applause to you adidasguy, long overdo.
You already have +12 right there - on the existing connector for the gauge lights. The two +12 wires in the new connector go to the same place on the mating connector in the newer wiring harnesses. You can see that by looking at an "F" wiring diagram.
Never go off of the battery - you need things to shut off when the bike is off. Always connect to switched +12 lines. They are usually orange in the wiring diagram.
Coils: One side of coil is +12 and other side is the signal from the ignition unit. Refer to your wiring diagram for color codes. There should bethreads where people have done this.
just checking...its ok for me to have wired my horn off of the battery because it goes through the relay, right?

If the horn does not work with the bike off, then it should be OK but should be fused in case the horn shorts out.
If the horn can sound by pressing the button with the bike off - change it. You don't want the horn button to get wet and short out in the middle of the night.... or while riding.... or really anytime..... and not be able to shut off the horn.
the horn is fused, made sure of that one :thumb:
just posted up some pics of my mounted wired horns. very happy with them. louder than my trucks horn

So I think I'm going to try to wire the new wires into the old connector like bob talks about in his 2nd to last post here:
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=39131.0
So the grey +12 and the black/white wires should be easy enough, but I'm a bit confused on where to splice the orange one into. Would it be best if I just soldered the orange wire and grey wires together and just have one +12 wire going into the connector?
I'm going to need a pin removing tool, like in the 'What is this game'. Any suggestions/is there only one size?
Graham
You can splice the two +12 wires together.
You can cut and splice anyway you wish - you're only dealing with +12 and ground.... both of which already are there and go to the gauge indicator lights. Splice on to them any way you wish or cut and splice connectors or whatever is convenient.
If you splice on wires, then add a terminal to the end to screw onto the new tach and run with it. The wires screw onto the back of the tach so no reason you have to use the wires that came with it or the connector or no reason you can't cut the wires and splice them to the +12 and ground of the connector you already have for the gauge indicator lights.
Hmm...these are very good points. didn't think about that. I'll get on it when I have some time!
Thanks!

Don't you already have an orange wire in your headlight bucket? And a gray one? Just attach your new wires to the old....
All wiring can be done at the gauges. The gauge lights are +12 and ground. They're right there. No need to get into the headlight bucket.
In fact, that's exactly the way the tach is wired in a new wiring harness. He has old harness so he needs to farkle the connector. Old had 2 wires for the gauge lights. New one has 3 wires and the extra barrel connector for the tach signal. 2 of the 3 wires in the new connector are +12 so they can be tied together.
Anyone have a clue what size pin extractor I need?

Here's how to get it done in 5 minutes or less:
cut, strip, solder together and tape them up.
So cut the new wires from the new connector. Strip a little of the +12 and ground going to your existing gauge lights. Solder and tape up.
OR just splice a +12 and ground wire to your existing wires to the gauge lights. Strip the other ends 1/2". Tin them a little with some solder. Wrap them around the screws for the +12 and ground on the new tach. Maybe add a small washer to help hold them in place as you tighten down the screws.
You run a separate wire from the barrel connector to the input to the coil.
I guess I thought he was hung up on his source of +12v. Isn't there an orange and a gray wire already there?
