Title: Funderb's 92 Virago.
Post by: Funderb on January 16, 2013, 08:55:04 PM
So I branched out a little bit, this time, I've reached out to the cruiser world. Down the street for 400 bucks, a kid had a 92 xv750 virago. (Yammy cruiser.) Now, I resisted my initial CBRfxr inclination to cut the engine out and splice it onto the GS frame, so I'm working with a bike that RUNS!

the only truly bad thing, besides the paint job, is one muffler was smashed in, what appears to be an accident, and was not even on the bike. I am ridiculously cheap, so i am using the existing muffler and creating a 2 into 1 system.

Heres some pics:

When "the wiz first arrived at home:

The epic tank paint:

Lowered, swapped the bars, and propped up the seat and tank for reducing the original shape.

I'm starting small(ish), but may progess to a fighter as things continue.
I HATE the shaping and styling of the 2nd gen viragos (why did you buy one, idiot?) but this is going to be a fun project. (oh.)

Open to suggestions! fire away! seriously, your wish is my command. Lets do something fun with this.

as for the paint job. I am TORN. I don't know if I hate it, or love the originality. someone worked VERY hard on that thing, I just don't know if I can destroy it. I mostly hate it. but really. look at it.

yeah. cant beat a viagra. even with teh harry potter theme. as long as this gen doesnt have thestarter issues, and or the coil issues youre golden. BTW NEVER try to service carbs while in bike. or if you do, plug the holes first ( intake holes that is) my xv700 got unwanted surgery because of my carelessness  :technical:

You have to take that bike...with that paint to a biker bar at least once. Just cause.

One sick looking bike except for the V shape and that.... paint job! hahahahahahaha

sorry, crap like that has no business being on or around a motorcycle.
Yeah it looks like good artwork.

but I would totally repaint it.

Honestly, anyone with a passion and respect for motorcycling would probably bust your balls Very badly for that!

but, its your bike.

Heres an idea I'll share that I would LOVE to do to mine if only my rear fender and side covers were metal.

If the rear fender is metal (im fairly certain the front is metal)
Strip them down to the Bare metal. (fenders and tank, not sure about that side cover tho, can always paint it silver)
Clean them up & polish it really good.
Then get them clear powder coated.

You have sooo much aluminum and chrome on the bike, I think it would look absolutely Bad@$$!

and yeah, I got that idea from this bike here which is my absolute Fav. cruiser. (look of the bike & all the aluminum & chrome)

(edit)
ugh ya prick! hahaha
got me jealous as hell even tho I dont like the V shape of those old cruisers.

looking at the pics again, polished up fenders & tank and clear coated.... hell I would ride it in a heartbeat!

It honestly would be the cheapest route to go as well if you want to repaint it.

if you do tho, I WANT TO SEE IT!!!! hahaha

I have the perfect mirrors to accompany that paint job actually.

hahaha great responses all, i'll keep you guys in the loop. I've enrolled in viragotechforum, its an entirely different world over there for sure.

its name now, and forever more, is the wiz.

I'm not much of a chrome guy, I like brushed steel and aluminum, I WONT be flat blacking this thing out, unless something weird happens to me, like a brain tumor that drastically alters my personality. I want to make this bike more aggressive, but keep it more comfortable than the GS for longer trips. I may (i live at home now that I've graduated) have to sell the GS if I decide to keep this bike.  :o we shall see.
right now I'm looking at a fighter design, i'm sourcing some lower handlebar clamps or maybe clip-ons, and a new tank.

its going to be kinda sorta like

http://www.customfighters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48584&page=7

Not so elaborate, i don't have $$ for forks, so, yeah. Its going to be fun regardless.

update: I have turned, successfully, the one remaining muffler into a 2into1 system, and am waiting on an exhaust clamp to finish her up. My welds were actually not too bad either. I mean, not great, but functional.

Today I got some bulk welding done, subframe 60% complete.
Tank in place, but needs some fiddling to be just right.

I have a sunburn from the welder, but its going well.

close- off a cb750F, the sporty version. I think they do have a similar tank.

Very cool.  I have always had a "thing" for Viragos.  My grandma gave me a toy Virago (I still have it) and I'm pretty sure that's what kicked off my fascination with bikes and cars.  Honestly, they are hideous looking rides but that's what I love about them.  I got to ride alongside one this summer on a long weekend ride and it was great.  Someday I will own one of these ugly ass bikes!

I will definitely follow your build.  It looks awesome.

Sorry to hijack your thread!

Very similar. I had a saber for a short while but I HATED it. My buddies magna was so much nicer. The saber's riding position was comfy but it was so top heavy that every time I leaned into a turn it felt like it would be last.

Progress!  :woohoo:

I've got the subframe totally roughed out, the tank in place but not affixed quite yet, the pegs are 90% in place, just a little adjusting to do. rear cropped fender up in place, and looking pretty good I think, the tail section needs to finish being boxed in, still deciding on the shape. bars still need to be flipped a little lower.

here she is so far:

hope you guys like the progress, send me some positive vibes too, I'm trying to patch things up with the Ex,  :cookoo: it seems that my welding skill fluctuates with how well its going with her....  Though I am getting much better at welding, women are a lot more difficult than that shaZam!.  :flipoff:

Looking good now.  :thumb: Did you play with the fork angle or is it the same and just an optical illusion it looks more upright? Kept the tank to sell later? Eager to see this finished.

Pardon me.
But, YOU SUCK!!!!!  :flipoff:  :D
hahahahahahaha

That tank and the read end is (how I think its going to look) completely changing the Ugly V shape of the bike!

Got me even MORE jealous now!!

So far, I think im going to REALLY like that bike when its done!   :thumb:

Thanks! I've done more tinkering, I didn't like how the tail piece/brake light enclosure came out, so its been cut off in favor of a lower profile design. I'm rethinking it entirely, so it'll be a paper mockup soon. The tail itself has actually been lowered at the seat another inch, and made about an inch longer overall. I may be able to fit a passenger.... haha the seat size will hopefully reduce the size of the lady who rides along with me. :thumb:

QuoteThat last picture I just see ENGINE.  Sure there are some wheels, tank, etc,...but nah ENGINE.  Fook yea

Thats why I love the bike! Its got a look like few other bikes.

QuoteDid you play with the fork angle or is it the same and just an optical illusion it looks more upright? Kept the tank to sell later? Eager to see this finished.
The rake is untouched, I just lowered the front end 2 inches, which honestly changed the look of the bike totally. (so did cutting off the tail. ha!)

The one annoying thing I've found is that the forks turn about 2-3 degrees farther to the left than right, probably because of the lock and for more sidestand stability, unfortunately, this also means the tank had to be pushed back 1/4" farther than before. hmph. I guess its not too bad.
More updates soon! I have replenished my spool of welding wire!

Progress marches on, despite all the bullshit trying to pull me back.

I've done, hopefully, all the welding I'm going to do. Which is nice.

My next steps are:

Build seat
Re-clean fuel tank
air filter
Fuel delivery system
tune-up
front wheel bearings replacement
Tidy up electrical stuff

This is how she's looking after I slapped some paint on and put the old girl and stuck the parts on temporarily.

This thing is awesome.  I really love the shape that you have give it.  It's going to be a blast to ride.  The only thing I don't like is the Honda on the tank.  I think it's a bit tacky to have Honda on the tank and yamaha on the engine covers, but then again that's just my anal retentive side talking.   I can't wait to see how it looks with a seat.

In my true ADD nature, i've gone and bought a bandit 1200s, she's the new project.
And on this note, Sadly, I must say that Ol' Shitty is gone, I've sold the little GS500 that could. She will be dearly missed.
I'll be sure to put up some pics of the Bandit soon.

The virago is up for sale too, if anyone is in the area and wants to buy it. $1200 to my GStwins friends, and $1600 to all the other riff raff around.

PS- Sorry bombsquad, had to keep the HONDA on there. :D

Lol, it will just add to the intrigue of, "what the heck is that bike?".   I think you did a great job and it's a great concept for a custom build.  I would love to see a video of someone riding it.  I want to see what the body position would look like.

whoa! I completely missed this build as well. Rad as hell mang!! Complete transformed and you did a damn fine job at it. Really liking the new look. 2 complaints; the gap under the seat, maybe fill it with a silver or black panel? aaand what happened to the wizard??

I would kill to have the wiz's old tank/covers to fit on my rx50 (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2013-05-09_19-22-32_25_zpsc9786cfe.jpg). 2 stroke, 10k revving, 50cc, 5speed, cruiser looking w/ wizard paint. would be too good!

streezin- still have the wiz fuel tank, its starting to rust a little bit, and the petcock was trashed, if no one wants it, let me know when ya visit florida again! haha

bomb and fxr, thanks, I'll see if I can get someone to poot around on it in the street and take some pics or a video. Its a pretty upright position, knees are pretty close to 90deg, and the tiniest bit of forward lean. My pop rode BMWs back in his day, and he voted for that setup rather than where the pegs used to be, which was right next to those chrome swingarm caps.
The ended up that way partially because i really wanted to have a functional rear brake. and that wasnt going to happen any other way.

You should give him the Wizard tank. it either belongs on a bike or it belongs on the wall. It would be a shame to let a great work of art rust away.
