What year bike?

Older have a cable tach, newer have an electronic tach.

I bet it's an older cable tach. Is your cable stuck/rusted?

Wrong!  It's a 04F with electric tach.   :icon_lol:

Wish everyone would get in the habit of telling us what year bike they are talking/inquiring about.  Although very much the same for the 2 decades they've been making them, there are some very significant differences when getting down to details.

Neither my 97 or 02 GSs were equipped with tacos.

One of my 07s would stick every now and then. After cranking the revs or tapping the tach it would work. Its just a loose connection and IMO, no big deal.

So either tap on it or check your wiring.  :icon_mrgreen:

Yeah if I tap it then its fine I just don't want it to get worse over time

You can take it apart and check the connections

its not hard to work on, the electrical system on our beloved gs albeit simple, anyone can work on. can either check from the tach down, or from feed up. although what you were saying that it worked after tapping it,  sounds like issue is close to tach

Check the wires on the back of the tach. Sounds like one is loose. 3 wires: +12, ground and signal. any one of them could be loose.
