Hey guys, I could use a little of your expertise. The engine in my 2002 GS500E is locked up. The rest of the bike is in perfect shape, though. I'm thinking about buying a wrecked 2009 GS500F and mixing the two, in one way or another, if it's possible.
The GS500F will need forks, a headlight, and a front rim. The fuel tank and gauges are both dented, but still work. It still starts right up, and only has 6500 miles on it. Price is $1200.
Will those parts taken from my 2002 GS500E fit?
If not, will the engine taken from the '09 F fit into the '02 E?

Still just an idea, open to any suggestions.
$1200 is a steal and maybe $400 max to fix up if you bought all the parts from members here.
The only part not interchangeable is the tachometer. 2002 had a mechanical tach. 2004+ is electronic. You can get an electronic tach if the one on the 2009 is trashed. That's the only item you can't move from your 2002 to the 2009.
You can move the 2009 to your2002 but again-you will have to replace the tach. The 2009 does not have a place for the cable to the mechanical tach.
By the photo, it appears the gauges are OK but the bracket is bent. Easy fix. You can remove the whole fairing and move your 2002 headlight to it if you like the naked look or the fairings are thrashed. I see gaps between the inner and outer front fairing so my guess is remove the fairing - it's too twisted and bent.
Forks are compatible as is all the front end. Someone was asking me for fork bottoms to paint and I need to follow through, but you can sell him those bent forks for a few dollars since he wanted the bottoms to paint.
I guess that leave the tank: blue one on ebay right now, ending today at $77 right now. However, your tank and tail plastics can be moved to the 2009. They are compatible. If your tank is compatible color, then you just move the tank and can sell the tail plastics.
In fact, if just the gauge bracket is bent and the gauges are OK, then use the gauge bracket from your 2002.
I'd sat fix up the 2009. It is less work than moving a motor. You could do it all in one day. Then part out your 2002. You'll get at least $100 if the engine head is good. Titled frames are worth money (especially here in WA where there is no inspection - you can get a license plate for a bare frame if the title is clean).
Hope this helps.
PS: Missed the second photo. Yes - remove the fairings. Speedo looks like junk. Can't tell about the tach. Try to get it down in price - mention it would take $1000 to fix it up. Still, $1200 is good given you have everything needed except maybe the tach. Insure the rest of the frame is straight. I don't see any rear end damage. Insure the front steering stem is good.
Worst case: if frame is bad, move things to your 2002. Move EVERYTHING - all wiring, engine and carbs. 2001-2002 I consider sort of bastard or orphan years - half 89-00 and half 2004+. You will be better going with 2009 wiring and carbs. Much more support for the 2004+ stuff.
I'd go for it. There are plenty of people here to guide you through which ever way the transplant goes.
Started to say something. Had an epic post, really.
But, what he said ^^

Haha. I'm going to check it out this weekend and as long as it's in order like it's described I'll go for it. Thanks for the help!
Thought I'd check in... I picked up the bike on Friday, it was wrecked in the front badly...worse than photos showed...but the rest was just flawless. Spent yesterday and today, maybe 6 hours total, switching them up. Still need to tuck a few wires, probably need a new battery, headlight bulb, etc. but it's basically all good to go. Oh, except gauges.
Here's the original '02 before the engine went...

And here's the new combination as it sits now:

Thanks again for the help, glad I didn't pass it up.
