Title: Paint choices?
Post by: jacob92icu on January 23, 2013, 06:27:27 PM
Hey everyone,

I am having a tough time deciding whether or not to paint my bike. I know that this paint is unique, but I don't really like it. I consider my self to be a pretty decent painter, granted it would just be rattle can cause guns cost a lot. I am thinking either blue or black, and then I will add my own Suzuki decals right after painting and probably purchase one of those gs500 chain gaurds later down the road.

Heres the current paint job, tell me what you think.

Holy Pinstripe Batman!

--I like it the way it is personally.  But, if you have to paint, there is only one way to go.  Suzuki Blue.

Careful with rattle can.  Brake Cleaner will take it right off.  Ask me how I know this.

Haha I know exactly how you know it, your tried to paint your brake calipers. I did the same thing on my old xs750

By the way, can you buy Suzuki blue in rattle can? or something close to it?

Actually it was a 2000 GSXR-750 Stator cover.  Painted it glossy black due to a PO lowside.  Then when I worked on the brakes, some splashed on the cover and the smears appeared.

No idea about Suzuki Blue in a rattle can.  I'd take the parts to a reputable paint shop or borrow the tools.  I'm sure somewhere there is a paint code for Suzuki Blue, but I have no idea.  I remember seeing it somewhere on the board, but I have slept since then.

Ahhh interesting way to learn about that haha. Also, you know those little silver S for Suzuki decals that they put on the 01+ tanks? Can you buy those some where with like a sticky backing or something?

I am painting my bike Suzuki Blue, The color code for it is "YC2 - Candy Grand Blue" You can get it from www.colorrite.com in a rattle can, but I found its barely any more money for me to go to my local NAPA Paint & Supply and have them mix up a can of actual auto paint into a spray can. It only gives you about a 3hour window to paint so prep and prime everything before hand and be ready to go. Once thats dry they do the same for the clear coat.

Some Sherwin-Williams stores will also mix auto paint for you. Just hop on google maps and search "automotive paint" thats what i did.

Like my profile picture?  Yeah, they are cool.  Try bikebandit.com...although I am not sure if it comes in peel-and-stick.  You may have to glue it on yourself.

Will NAPA mix it up for you in a rattle can puma? or would you have to use a paint gun if you got it mixed up by NAPA?

And yes, just like the one in your profile picture jester haha. I'm down to glue it, I would probably try gorilla glue since I know that stuff works like a charm, but I would be afraid to have some leak past behind the decal and start dripping down the tank, it's not coming off hahahah.

They told me they mix it up in rattle can, minus the rattle part. You will have to buy a pack of nozzles (~$2) and (optional, but recommended) one of these:

Oh I've heard of those and heard bad things about them. I think you might be better off without the gun adapter. I was going to try it but I started asking around. I had to applaud you cause you knew the paint code though  :thumb:

When are you going to start painting your bike?

The gun adapters arent bad as long as you dont get one that impedes the spray. i'll get mine up at home depot, the link I showed was the first one from a google search. Also wrap the can's ring with 2 sided tape just to help avoid sliding/slipping.

My plan is to start about a month ago haha. Have a grant check coming to me any day now from my school. Then taxes. With that I will be able to buy the last couple things I need so I can paint.

THis is the adapter I have used, just take a dremel and widen the hole for no drips or sore fingers.

I guess Ill have to try it. I thought it looked like a good deal. Is the spray pattern pretty even and consistent?

I had no problem with uneven spry, seemed a lot finer and more even that rustoleum cans I had used in the past that seemed to just spit out the paint. Here is the Nighthawk I painted last spiring using NAPA's paint, but sadly had to sell. Sorry about the quality, this is the only pic I can find and its from my phone the day I sold it.

Sounds like an emotional day! Haha, sorry you had to sell, paint looks awesome from what I can see. I painted this with just a plain old rattle can

I had some annoying splurts of paint out of the rustoleum cans, but turned out pretty good. Overall, sounds like ill have to buy one of those gun adapters, looks nice.

Painting is the easy part, getting decals on straight is another story.

Ya sometimes the decals can be a pain in the rear. Luckily I was able to get my Yamaha tank decals on without any air bubbles, first time trying too haha. I think if your going to paint something you really need to get some decals or else it just looks plain.

Hey guys, quick question. I went to buy some 2k clear today from the local paint shop and i mentioned I was using rustoleum enamel and the lady said it is not compatible with the 2k clear because its oil based. Is this really that big of a problem? She told me to buy some krylon so i did for the gas tank and tail plastics, but i already painted the fender and grab bar and don't feel like painting and sanding them again. Am i going to have a problem clear coating the two pieces like bubbling or orange peel?

I have a pair of paint guns I started out with, use a crap out of them until I was able to save some money and get better ones. Once I learned how to adjust them, I could paint anything I wanted. I cleaned them after each use. Still have them in the case. If you are interested in them LMK, They are out in the shop cabinet collecting dust

No thanks weed. But do you know if Rustoleum (oil based) paint will cause problems with my 2k clear coat?
Title: Re: Paint choices?
Post by: weedahoe on March 23, 2013, 08:27:05 PM
It will not hurt anything as long as the base is cured. There are a lot of guys who use Rustoleum like that. There are MANY YuoTube videos on it

2K Max can be applied to any base coat according to their product summary. I used it on my Rustoleum paint job with no problems (granted it hasn't stood the test of time yet). I even sprayed it on my wheels while they were wet to get a chemical bond due to the metal flake- still no problems.

Why dont you buy another tank and prep and paint that one rather than your original one. Then when its done just swap them over?

If you are not happy with the results or dont like how it turns out you just start again and because the bike is not laid up you can take as long as you want/need to do it

When you are happy with the outcome sell the original tank and claw some of the costs back  :dunno_black:

Good idea. But I'm not to worried about it cause I'll be painting them at school and the only time i can ride is weekends when i come home, so worse case scenario I'll miss a couple weekends of riding. I don't think its worth it to buy a new tank for that.

If you just want to practice painting I happen to have a tank with your name on it! Really, price of shipping and it's your haha

Anywhoozle, you can mix enamels and the other kind of paint. Can't remember right now. As long as the base coat is all cured, you can keep adding on. The problem comes from when people try to paint too fast so the oil base and whatever base try to mix, but can't. Once everything is all dry, it doesn't matter at all
