Title: Match Factory Finish on Aluminum Cases?
Post by: Jforte1 on January 30, 2013, 09:13:52 PM
Hi guys!

I'm very thankful for all the fantastic posts on this forum!

I have some scratches on my magneto cover and I'd like to restore the case to the original aluminum finish so it matches the other surrounding cases..

I have done some research on the topic and I'm guessing they anodize the aluminum and use a dye to achieve the final color.. Can anyone confirm?

I used a metal grinder and then sanded the case down with various grits of sand paper to get it nice and smooth then polished with a metal compound but the color is still different than the other factory-finished cases.

Anyone had any luck re-finishing a scratched engine case to match the stock finish?  :icon_lol:

That paint color is very hard to match. Where exactly is the scratch?

Usually its cheap enough just to replace the cover. I replaced the entire right side engine case for $50.

You could also just clean it really good, tape everything else off and spray the engine with an airbrush or touch-up paint gun.

I think we can all agree that none of us has yet to find a paint color code for the silver engine. I've tried probably 10 different silvers and none match. None of the Suzuki silvers from colorrite match. I have not seen a paint code for the engine. There is a paint code for the frame, but not the engine.

If anyone has a paint that is really close, let us know.

Has anyone contacted a Suzuki dealer about it?  :dunno_black:

Seems like it'd be the most common sensical approach to the problem

You could also try taking the cover into an automotive paint store to try and mix up a match.

The answer is yes and they don't have any paint code for it.

I do a lot of custom work and a lot of the guys like the paint to match the OEM. I have a can of Chrysler silver that comes very close. It is part code PSB and/or WSB

Outta curiosity, what's the paint code for the black engine? Mine could use a touch-up or two.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I'm going to look at prices for a replacement cover..Depending on prices, I might go grab that Chrysler paint if I'm feeling adventurous.. :D
