Title: Check out this beautiful GS500!
Post by: nyc_gs500e on February 03, 2013, 12:32:51 PM
Hey, everyone!  I want to eventually get a GS500 that looks like this:

Fast forward to 9:50 for a good view.

I love the front fairing/headlight/windscreen combo.  Anyone know what kind this is?  Looks like there's an aftermarket panel right under the engine, too.

Wondering if the owner is on these forums!

Similar to the original 1989 fairing, however the bellypan looks like its a "Gimbel bellypan"
not sure if the top 1/4 fairing is a Targa or not...

BTW, adidasguy, when you do read this thread, is that an oscilloscope in the back?

JUNIOR is his name.
1992 GS500E
Originally sold in Canada as the speedo is only in KM and has a Canada sticker on the frame - which I have left on.
Tank is 1994 brand new one found in Germany for a fortune shipped to the US.
OEM European clip-on handle bars also new old stock NOS (found in Israel).
R&G bar ends and muffler guards. Shark fin (right side lower swing arm by the rear sprocket)
R&G crash sliders
Stainless steel chain guard (made by me)
Vance & Hines muffler.
Denali fog lights.
Harley stick-on reflectors.
2009 forks used so I would have the reflector tam for mounting the fog lights. also one 1992 fork was leaking so why not put on newer ones?
2004+ turn signals with smoke lenses from Lights4All on ebay.
LED smoked tail light from same company.
SS front brake line and 2009 caliper (why rebuild a 1992 caliper when a nearly new used 2009 is $15?)
Shorai 14ah LiFe battery
MosFet regulator

Belly pan aka Bug Spoiler: OEM but it is nearly identical to the fiber glass one made by Gimbel. Fiberglass for OEM and the Gimbel one.

Headlight cowling: Skidmarx. Nearly identical to the OEM one. Fiberglass.

Seat/tail: Gimbel. Decals are from the tail of a GS500F. 2008 I think. Bought the decals on ebay one time and realized they would look good on this tail. Again, fiberglass.

Gimbel parts are primed fiberglass. You need to do final filling & sanding then paint.
Colorrite has OEM colors.
I only use 2kMax clear coats - 2 part urethane in a rattle can from Germany. Readily available in the US about $20-$24 a can.
The WIKI has a color chart for color codes.
Rear sets/pegs: Gimbel again

Gimbel parts are available on ebay as you found. I do not like the Gimbel headlight cowl as much as the OEM or Skidmarx ones. Skidmarx is available in the UK. Not sure where in the US but they do ship international. Gimbel ships international.

A view of the other side. Here the belly pan was off as I had just completed some maintenance and hadn't put it back on yet.

(Yes - scope in the back, 4 channel Tektronics. Handy to REALLY SEE what the electrical system is doing. Its the nerd in me.)

Beautiful bike adidasguy. Really nice  :thumb:

I may end up modelling my 1994 E after JUNIOR :)

I used a very similar scope in my academia days, also by TEKTRONICS, guess thats why it looked familiar...

BTW, I am from Israel. If anyone wants the same clip-ons configuration, pm me. the GS was a very common bike here and there are literally dozens being parted all around here.

Wow, just...wow.  Thank you so much!  I really like the skidmarx headlight cowling and the bellypan.

For the skidmarx headlight cowling, if I got a black version, would it be black on the outside and white in the middle section like in the photo here?  Or would it be all black?  When you ordered, was your red and black already like that?  Do you think it'd be hard for a complete newb to install?  Will I have to do any painting?
http://www.skidmarx.co.uk/product.php?id_product=30077

Sorry for all the questions.  Love your taste!

What you see as white in their catalog photo is the clear windshield. Mind is smoke color. I bought mine used and had to patch & paint it.

The Skidmarx are ready to install. The windshield part might be clear or slightly smoked. As said, I bought mine used.

They  are easy to install. anyone can do it.

The Gimbel parts do require painting. They come as primed fiberglass. I bought the factory matching color from colorrite.com and painted them, applied decals then clear coated.

Very cool.  I found an ebay site that sells the cover and it said to include what color windshield you want, so I'm guessing it's the same direct from the company.  Hoping to make this one of my first mods.  How well does it protect against the wind on the highway?  Thanks for the info!

Please post the link so we can check it out and advise you if it is not what you are expecting. We wouldn't want you to purchase the wrong thing.

Oh, "bikini fairings" aren't called that for nothing. They give as much wind protection as does a yellow polka dot bikini does for the chest of a female from the sun. On the other hand, they really add to the eye appeal like a yellow polka dot bikini.

Your seat is stock that has been recovered with some foam added for that more butt-shape style.

Yes, I do have a few parts. Built a bike with some of them - this one - called PHENIX because he rose from all the spare parts. (PHENIX because bike custom plates are limited to 6 characters and soon I will pay  the extra $72 for a custom license plate. Junior's plate is "GS500" and Suzi's is "SUZI").
Phenix has the other seat that Gimbel sells. It replaces just the seat. The other one replaces the seat and the tail plastics.:

And there are some spare parts for more projects. How I end up with all the parts I do not know. Either they come from an alternate universe - like "Sliders" or they reproduce when I'm not looking.

It is a friends. Seems to have stuck floats. Crankcase full with gas.waiting for him to come over.
Ninja is a pos to work on. Tank must come off to get at spark plugs.
Phoenix, Suzi and Junior have pity on the ninja.

Kinda dredging up an old post but you can order the Skidmarx fairing from streetfighters by design. You have to call them but they can get em to the USA. Total cost including shipping is $165. I haven't ordered mine yet so I do not know if you can get any color, but they seem like decent people to deal with.

www.streetfightersbydesign.com    (the gs500 parts are not on this website, you have to call)

Dude why do you ahve 80 pairs of forks ... and they all look OK ?
I had like 6-7 sets over the years, but 99% of them had some damage ... I had a few succesful 1/2 swaps (like swap a bent right out of a set with a left that was bent but right was good etc etc) till I was left with only damaged legs ...
I cut a few of em to make crazy crackhead tools, like to put against a bearing race and whack to seat it etc ...
The rest were so bad I junked em.

I cut a KTM leg one time to weld onto the Slingshot rear shock so I can have a threaded cap ...

Cool.
Buddha.
