The contest: Best single-sintence advice for new riders
Contest ends Saturday at midnight 2-16-13. This contest is open to all GStwin members. Moderators, regular users, even the "special" members.
I will be the judge.
Up for grabs: Citipower cree Q5 flashlight with Hi, Low, and strobe function. Very tacticool.

I find this important for anything that doesn't have an automatic transmission.
Never shift into neutral when coasting to a stop, you never know when you will need your engines power to avoid accidents.
Lots of ways to say it but sort of...
Ride within your comfort zone.
or
Don't ride outside your comfort zone.
I vote for Adidasguy. It may be a very simple statement, but when analyzed, it says everything. Be comfortable. Don't let others dictate your riding style. Stay within yourself.
Take a motorcycle safety course
Just do it, and pay attention!
Ride for yourself, keep aware of your surroundings and don't worry about what others think.
All the gear, all the time. ( ATGATT)
Dont try to keep pace with Mister up Mt Tambourine!! .. HE CRAZY!!
Always wear a helmet

If you can't see their face, they can't see you or your ride.
Look where you want to go.
Plan on falling off your bike at some point.
Two words..
Gravel sucks.
Anytime you're on your bike, act like you're invisible, and you should make it out alive on the other side!
I can't remember where i heard it or the exact verbiage, but something along the lines of "Cautious riders grow to be old riders."

That was what I was going to say.
Remember, it only takes a little water to make the paint on the road slick as black ice.
Don't buy a brand new bike, you're gonna drop it and cry like a little baby
"Ride your own ride."
Similar to what others have said...

When first starting think about SAFETY, speed comes with comfort, comfort comes with experience, experience comes with safety.
That's four sentences separated by commas. :police: :tongue2:
Regarding a first bike purchase, insurance, or just about anything: Never believe that something bad won't happen because you are so much "different" (smarter, more cautious, incredibly well balanced) than everybody else... you're not.
First off you need to invest in gear and go to a safety course suck as MSF or Riders Edge; than you put in a couple hundred miles of parking lot miles practicing what you have learned; when you feel you are ready, start off slow and safe with all your gear on for some street riding, I recommend a non busy street, jumping onto I95 wouldn't be a good first choice; when you finally think you are good, go to a track day and really learn how to properly ride your bike.

I like that saying but don't completely agree with it. :icon_lol:

Fair enough, I changed it to a warning reminiscent of how I laid my bike down the first time.
No, a GSX-R 1000 is not a suitable first bike. :cookoo:
thought of another one... i used this when my niece was learning recently...
if i see you being a fool!!.. I will break off my foot in your ass!
Our beloved gs, DOES have enough power to get you into trouble, just takes a tad longer getting there
Wear your gear, don't f%$k with the bike, pay attention and remember everyone was new like you once.
"You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose...but you can't wipe your friends on your sleeve."
I had someone tell me that in my motorcycle training class. Never forgot it. I pass it down to all noobs that I know.
Motorcycles aren't dangerous so much as they are unforgiving of mistakes.
I always liked; "The direction you are looking in, is the direction your bike will inevitably go."
Which I just noticed is essentially what bombsquad83 wrote. So what he said :thumb:
The two kinds of riders are those that HAVE been down and those that WILL go down.
If you think of it, I've never met any rider that's been in the game for a while that hasn't at least dropped it in a driveway.
"Everyone is trying to kill you."
The greatest sage like advice I was given when I carried out the mandatory handling course -
"Assume you are invisible and everyone is out to get you" (Zwerski's comment sums this one up)

Best single-sentence advice for new riders...?
Always put your feet down when you come to a stop. (http://www.stromtrooper.com/images/smilies/new/yesnod.gif)
Here's a good link - from one of those "other" forums.. 50 single sentences - think everyone could read down that list and thoughts of those "fun" moments will spring to mind..

Thats probably a fair call - although in my defense my account with that "other forum" probably expired about a month after I got my GS and found THE forum :thumb:
lol.... coulda been close call!! .. I could hear Johns flying monkeys chattering and squealing to be let out of the cages!! ;)
One single sentence?
That's a toughie. What applies on the open rural roads and twists is different to the urban jungle. E.g. Always ride so drivers can see you in their mirrors is useless on a trafficless rural road full of sweepers and twists. Riding within your limits, not trying to keep up with others, etc, applies there, but doesn't help negotiating the cars that want to get you when riding in the city.
Hmm.... this requires some more thought.... a single sentence - not four or five or six with commas - to impart something succinct and across the board. Thinking cap on. Do not disturb sign on door. See you when the pizza runs out...
Always wear your gear, always!
Beating the championship in WSBK on PS3 does NOT mean you know everything! :icon_rolleyes:

well he does spank them constantly :icon_lol:
This one stuck with me as a new rider: "Ride as if everyone else is trying to kill you."
"Your most important piece of safety equipment is that thing you stick in your helmet."
I may need to learn from that sage like wisdom of everyone being out to get you - had one of "those" moments last night on the commute home.
Had a car merging from the left (we drive on the left here), I slowed down a bit to let it merge in.. car slows down.. no indication.. slower.. I (incorrectly) assumed they were just being a muppet and waiting for me to get past before they merged. So I start to apply a bit of throttle.. down a gentle slope..
I ASSumed incorrectly..
They (the muppet) proceeded to execute a u-turn across the lanes in front of me from left to right very slowly in their nice big SUV. It took a bit of effort to pull up the GS in time, and was quite an effort to avoid braking too hard on the front and lay it down.
I should have known better, even though I was watching the driver I never saw them look to their right to see if any traffic was behind them..
Thighs are a bit sore today, but I am glad I spend a bit of time practicing stopping in unguarded car parking areas from time to time... my GS is still shiny

That sucks, but at least you're alright. I have a pretty 8 inch scar up my right arm where i was knocked off my bike (honda sabre at the time) by some woman in a ford f-250.
F-250 - Ouch... could have been worse I guess..
I was a bit worried during the stopping about getting taken out by a Ford Falcon behind me, guess they had ABS...

Hold your head up... HIGH!
You can even sing that tune when feeling nervous. It'll get your eyes off the pavement and into the distance. http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/steppenwolf/holdyourheadup.html
Learn how to spell! <:
"Does your mother know you are doing this?"
Always stuck with me from Safety Course..............Most answered "No"...
Cookie
here's another one...yeah I know....one entry....
"The laws of Physics are unforgiving....and the ground is very hard."
Cookie
"You are the only person that is going to keep you out of an accident"
(I'm new and I think too many people ride with an expectation that they can predict what other cars will do or that other people are looking out for them)
ok... best single piece of advice. Applies whether you're hitting the twists or negotiating you're way through the urban jungle....
Always remove the keys from your pocket Before putting on your gloves.
Take the following distance you would use in a cage and multiply that times 5
Two words: SLOW DOWN

Not an issue with the .95 sonics and 10w synth oil in there now though!! :thumb:
"Check your tire pressure"
Or else you'll miss flailing on the ground after sliding across an off ramp and watching your GS plummet 2 stories down into the woods when your tire blows out hitting an on ramp too fast.
Thankfully, I saved it. But damn was I scared! That's the only thing so far that's really made me change up some riding, so hopefully someone will learn from me, and not the almost really hard way

Although I like scoz's version a bit better, it is too similar to Zwerski's and he was first.
Congrats Zwerski!
Woohoo!
I agree scoz's is more nicely stated. My version is what I hear in my head while riding.
So happy!
Better to go into a corner slow and come out fast than to go in fast and come out dead.

I'm not entirely sure what that means.. Ride faster so that they can't catch you to kill you? Ride so slow that you end up a liability to everyone else? Carry a weapon with you at all times? That advice is a little ambiguous don't you think?

No i disagree. what i get from this, and i ride like this as well, is, " ride as though ppl WILL pull out in front of you, cut you off, swerve into your lane etc, etc etc. and have an exit strategy in place
This ^^

I am going to completely disagree with this advice. I taught with a national motorcycle safety program from 1989-2004, and we said this kind of thing on a regular basis. What I have grown to dislike about it is that it puts the primary emphasis on 'other people', when the statistics clearly show most motorcycle crashes are single-vehicle negotiating turns. That is, the biggest 'threat' to a motorcyclist is themselves, as they go into turns too fast and lose control. For people who spend a lot of time in traffic, it's still important to watch your environment and ride accordingly. But as one single piece of advice ~ particularly for a new rider ~ mine is better.
Also, after 2yrs. of riding your risk of crashing reverts back to the same level it was when you first started riding. That is, 'experienced' motorcyclists are just as likely to crash as newbies.
Well it doesn't matter. I am the judge. I make the decision. I say who wins. So.... :flipoff:
