My gs is up and running again, which led me to notice how loud it is, which led me to notice that the previous owner removed the sound baffling. Since I have a slight exhaust leak too, I am looking to replace the entire exhaust. Will every year be compatible with my 1997?
All exhausts will fit all models. Some are bigger for emissions, but all should work.
Correct. They all fit exactly the same.

I have an '04...
Now, when I look up exhaust slip-on's for the GS500, it will give a model for 05-09... Why? I am sure the '04 also has a cat like the later years too, but is the pipe diameter different so that it requires modification to fit an 05-09 slip-on (or something to this effect)? Or is it all just balogna and an 05-09 slip-on will fit my '04?

Yes, a CAT was added but that has no effect on the fitting. Different exhausts may be shaped a little different and have a different sound or volume of sound, but.......

BUT!....do the later pipes fitted with a CAT have an effect on the engines breathing? ie are they jetted or timed differently from non CAT bikes to compensate and if there is a difference will it be significant?
I dont know for sure and I have never seen mention of it in this forum :dunno_black: Until it is determined I would not recommend putting a CAT pipe on a bike that did not originaly have one and vice-versa.........even if they do fit the same :thumb:

Let's exclude California cause their emissions rules are very strict...For the 49 state versions:
Put an '89 on an '09 and I bet there is no noticeable difference than an '09 exhaust on an '09 bike.
Suzuki changed things. Why? Emissions. You'll also notice that the carbs changed from a 2-jet to a 3-jet. Why? Better tuning...most likely for emissions.
Tell you what...buy a 1989 and a 2009 exhaust, and measure the airflow resistance. It will vary based on how clogged the exhaust is in addition to various other factors such as catalysts.
All things considered, I think you are OK and should jet no differently. Stock is stock is stock on these bikes.
No need to flame, let's just call GS stock GS stock and move on.
EDIT: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/standards/light-duty/motorcycles.htm <-- From the EPA website. Notice that there were major changes in the 1970s, 2006, and 2010. I bet that's one reason why they stopped selling in the USA. Problems with emissions standard compliance. That might be why the Ninja 500 stopped selling too.

However if I see someone giving out what I know to be misguided, incomplete or untrue answers that could prove to have serious consequences for someone who doesn't stop to question what they are told then I may choose to say something......and from where I am sat it seems you dont like my approach.
You have owned 3 roadworthy GS5s for a few years and deal in spares. I have bought and sold at least 35 of them since 1992 and carried out just about every repair you can think of.
Take this statement of yours for instance

Good lord. All the damn pipes fit... You know what due to manufacturing differences I bet that no 2 89 or 09 exhausts flow exactly the same... you are all talking minutia of a little bitty 500cc starter bike and its absolutely nothing but a chicken measuring contest... get over it sledge... Adidas is the go to guy here for everyone and everything he know his shaZam!... The fact is that all GS's from 04 up have the same jets, same carbs, same everything and some have cats and others don't. Some have pair and others don't. It doesn't matter to the bike at all. If your worried... get a aftermarket exhaust that does not and should never have cats on it.
My 89 GS has been using a 2009 GS exhaust system for the last year or so and it runs just fine.
