Title: Bike coated in extiguisher...
Post by: ninjeff on March 07, 2013, 03:48:22 PM
So in a wonderful development, some puss-ridden jack-asses decided it would be fun to play with fire extinguishers in the secure garage last night. This morning we found every inch of the garage, and all the cars inside coated in a film of what ever it is that comes out of a fire extinguisher. This includes my bike. Its everywhere. Coating everything. I'm so mad i cant even explain.....

Let me back up....

I live in an apartment complex (two buildings anyway), and underneath the other building we have a climate controlled and secure (only 2 outside access points, both need special keys) parking garage. About the size of 20 cars. Tenets can opt to pay extra per month to have a reserved spot in this garage. This is where i park the bike. There are also some other quite nice cars that park down there: A new Genesis Coupe, a very custom 69 Camaro, my girlfriends 03 Tiburon (well, ok, not the nicest car in the world, but damned if she didnt buy it brand new and pay that thing off with every dime she could. Its not much, but its the world to her, and she treats it like a rare artifact) and some other newer but nice cars.

So we walk in there this morning, and the ENTIRE inside is coated in a white dust-film. Everything. Every inch. The floor, all the cars, the bike, everything. Its almost like what you'd expect from opening a treasure tomb after 5,000 years. We had no idea what it was.

After some heated calls to (not at) the Apartment Manager, he discovered that some &^%ing stupid college kids that live in the building thought it would be fun to take all of the fire extinguishers and spray them every where. The entire first floor was coated as well. Then, the morons left the empty extinguishers in a pile in a corner. The police have been called and yes they got prints.

My concern now is harm to the bike. Its really covered. I'm going to head out there and hand wash it in the garage (its 32 degrees outside) and then spray wax it. What else should i worry about? Its all over the tires, the chain, the controls....everything.

Advice?

7 1/2 years as a firefighter, it wont hurt a thing, water hose and spray it off. or car wash which ever works for you.

Forgot to say you need to go ahead and use a chain cleaner to clean all the old oil off chain and then re-lube it. As the powder will stay in the oil and wear the chain out. That is if the chain is really really covered in it( down in the links)

This is right up there with the time someone wrote "Buddha Loves You" and some other unintelligible things on our driveway with ketchup and mustard.  Definitely pisses you off, but no permanent damage.  They definitely should be held accountable for their stupidity.

Just make sure there is none caked in your chain ( I doubt there will be any but never know).

If these college kids get caught, not only will the pay high fines out the rear and have it permanently stamped on the're files,  but could possibly be kicked out of college. Some learn the hard way.

It's its anything like down here in FL the fire marshall could be brought in and they could be charged with tampering with a fire suppersion device.

Sheeeeiiiit happens.
It's all in how you deal with it.
Move on. Enjoy your bike. Someone did her wrong. You gave her love.

Those students will get what's coming to them.

Let the authorities deal with them. You're better off going for a ride and living the good life.

So we walk in there this morning, and the ENTIRE inside is coated in a white dust-film.

If it was a dry powder extinguisher containing ammonium phosphate I would be very concerned.

Do a search and see what long term effect it has on soft metals, switchgear and electrical/electronic equipment when it mixes with water and turns in phosphoric acid.........Its not good..........and why such extinguishers are not used on aircraft.

BTW...I am not a Fireman/fighter

Just know that, years down the road, you will find that dust caked in places you didn't even know were possible.  I got drunk at a party once and let one rip in my basement--I still find yellow dust underneath, behind and inside things...

In my -ahem- teenage years a buddy and I got into an electrical room at a power plant and I wot'd one of those yellow powder extinguishers all over him.  It was great fun til we realized we couldn't breathe and had to run for the exit in a solid cloud of yellow powder.  He did look funny when he took off his glasses.  haha  I know the guys who came to the room afterwards were buddha loves you pissed.  Dammmn kids.

most extinguishers in locations such as that are usually carbon dioxide. no worries. im assuming the garage is controlled access, not guarded right? even that is easy to bypass. ( one waits until someone else enters or leaves and follows.  and commences asshattery.

Its controlled access. From either the back door via key, the garage door via key, or the door inside the apartment building via key.

You would think if it had that kind of access restrictions it would have cam's all over.
