got my 2009 gs500f out of the garage and did a full post-winter maintenance on it, put in a brand new battery as well, and it started right up and ran like a beauty... the only things i've found wrong are the turn signals don't work, no response at all. The speedometer doesn't work at all and the tachometer doesn't work untill i hit high speeds, then it kicks in. I've bought the haynes manual for this bike but im not seeing anything on these issues. Anybody got a clue where i should start?
UPDATE: tested speedo cable, tested good.
cable doesn't spin when hooked into gear and rolling my bike. ordering new gear.
tested turn signal bulbs, good. no shorts found. power @ relay, good. bad relay. fixed :)
tachometer comes on and off so i'm looking for a loose wire or melted coating.
Did you check the bulbs?
Did you remove and inspect the speedometer cable to see if it was cut? (easy fix)
When I bought my GS it had a lot of bulbs out. Thinking something must of caused a short when the PO had it. Just replaced all the bulbs. Speedometer cable was also cut, so I replaced it.
One thing to note, if the speedometer cable in pinched, it could also cause it not get a reading. I kept wondering why mine would bounce up and down when I maintained a constant speed, turned out it was pinched between the headlight and the fork.
I replaced my speedo cable today as my previous one broke while out riding. Bought a Motion Pro cable from ebay and took 5 mins to change out
1. about the turn signals, is it likely that all 4 turn signals and the turn signal indicator bulbs went out? i'm going to buy a bulb for the turn signal indicator right now and see if that starts coming on, if so i'll replace all 4 signal bulbs.
2. about the speedometer. i took the cable off of both ends and it spins like it should, is there any further tests i can do to see if it's the speedometer or the gear on the wheel? when the cable is hooked into the gear, i can spin it from the top, when it is hooked into the speedometer, i can not spin it from the bottom.
Speedo cable probably not seated properly into the speedo.
Turn signals? Possibly the connector for the hand control. Not that if horn works. Quite likely you accidentally disconnected the flasher relay. It is on the right bracket under the seat.
With the cable hooked into the wheel, roll the bike forward with a little pressure from your thumb on the cable tip and see if it spins. If it doesnt, then the gear is probably the cause. That was how I diagnosed my '86 Shadow.
You can take a multimeter and use it to test bulbs. Just have to have some steady hands.
bulbs tested good so i tested power @ the relay, 12v. got a new relay from oreilly's. fixed :)
still waiting on speedo gear and trying to track down why my tachometer sometimes works and sometimes doesnt

Some people get all the luck. When I went to replace my speedo cable, the last person had put the tire on wrong and it positioned the screw under the fork. Had to take the whole tire off. :D
