Title: Is this worth $400? SCORE! SCORE! SCORE!
Post by: adidasguy on March 09, 2013, 08:20:24 PM
Going to see it tomorrow. Guy doesn't ride. Got it because he did work and the customer couldn't pay. Says clean title and runs.
Worth $400?

For 400  with clear title I would jump on it. Do a tune up and clean it and sell dor double. Or part out. a new rider just gettin into bikes will not have much to spend normaly so easy 1200.

Well, it is a Kawasaki. Something like late 80's I was told. Pre-Ninja vintage.

May be worth $400. The question is, do you really need another Kawi in the bike cave?

Bought it.
1992 Kawasaki EX500. Yep - a farve hoondirdz!

Story: New rider of 8 months laid it down on gravel ( not the illegal kind). Parked it 6 years ago. Never touched it again.
Year or so ago guy does work for him. Can't pay the $600 so he gives him the bike. Signs over the title. So not it sits for over a year. That's about 6 years now. Covered, stored inside. never touched.

Today I connected a new battery and it cranked. All lights come on. Gas tank: lots of clean metal inside. Minimal rust only in spots. Really clean.

The damage: Tank is perfect. Right side all smashed. Rear set right side broken. Levers broken. Brake lever (he he - I took a GS brake lever with me because I know they are the same). Fairing scraped up. Front main fairing bracket seems bent as front looks pushed to the left. Forks look fine. Clitch safety switch poopooed as it tried to start in gear.

All that I can fix.

Price $400!

Going to have it picked up by Dave at Seattle Used Bikes. Due to other projects and stuff, going to let him get her running. about $250. Probably have him put new tires on. I know I could do it. But he's going to transport it to his shop, do some work and deliver it to the Bike Cave. He's a good guy starting his business and after all, he's transposting it so let him get a bike running that has sat for 6 years. I have plenty of GS500 projects and have to start searching for EX500 parts.

and now the pictures.....

You can see the fairing is tweaked to the left from going down on the right side. Frint fairing is OK. So I locate a main fairing bracket.

It will me mine so that is OK.
That red one is going away. owner doesn't give a rats ass about it so why should I?
Oly will help assemble it so he knows how to work on his.
BrianRC is buying Quin.
A lot can happen when you don't come around for a few days.

Nice find and good choice with SUB ... I've met Dave a few times and seems like a nice guy.  I like his shop idea, too.  A retail spot for used bikes of different makes is really cool.

I first met Dave when he sold me Thumper.
Dave is a guy you can trust to not screw you over. He will do quality work to her her running.
Once she comes home in a week or two, I'll work to locate the fairings so she looks like new again.
Cool that she is a 500!
another reason for letting Dave do work: I don't know the ex500 that well (what year did they start calling them a Ninja?). And I've got lots of GS500 work to do - most important, helping Brian restore Quin to like-new condition. I'm really looking forward to that.

Just found this

Hi,
the difference between the EX 500 and the GPZ 500, is the name.
This model was built in 2 model ages. From 1987/88 to 1993 the EX500A und EX500B models were introduced and later from 1994 to 2001 the EX500C, EX500D and EX500E. In Europe the last GPZ500 was sold in 2004 and then removed from the market because it was not able to uphold the emission levels required in Europe, and was know as the GPZ500.
It is still sold in the USA today and is know as the EX500.
Outside of Europe this bike was named the EX500, also carrying the name Ninja (like the bigger 600R brother which was also named the ninja, but only in USA/Canada)
There are no full fairings for this bike, either in EX or GPZ flavour. The EX and GPZ are actually identical, just the names are different.

Hope this helps you

maybe this can get moved to projects and I'll rename it. Seems now to be becoming a project thread.

I have seen full fairings. Any picture I see of a full fairing all are 1992. maybe only 1992 had a full fairing?
The Haynes and Clymer manuals have been ordered.
Starting to order parts.
So was it 1994 they started to use the Ninja term?

I had a 2001 EX500 Ninja about 5 years ago.  A bit more complicated than the GS500, but not much.  Of course then I didn't have a lot of mechanical knowledge as I did now.  I think I owned it for a year and 1000 miles.  I changed the plugs and oil, and that was about it.

It was the wife's bike, and she decided to be a permanent passenger, so we sold it.

I wonder if that is a 500 with a 250 fairing. All the EX500s I have seen have the split fairing around the radiator.

Same here. But I located a few photos but only 1992's with the full fairing.
I do not see the full fairing on the 1992 KAWA parts list. That will be something for this parts whore to figure out. Need a second Bike Cave now for Kawa bikes and parts. Maybe the Haynes or Clymer manuals will help (damn that Amazon one click ordering!)
Dave at SUB I am sure can shed some light on it after he picks it up from the seller.

TITLE TRANSFERRED TODAY! Now to call Allstate and add it on. Damn. There goes another $50 or so. With so many bikes with them and house, office and car, each extra bike is more of a service fee. added FULL roadside assistance with free towing and $100 per incident for $37 a year. Covers ME, rather than a specific vehicle, on whatever I am driving or riding (bikes included!)

UPDATE: Did some searching. It sure does resemble the fairing for a 1992 250. I'll know more when Dave of SUB pucks her up. I never found the VIN or looked for it - just the title. Title said EX500. It would be a surprise if it really were a 250! I wouldn't complain. $400 is still a bargain.

The other odd thing is a single after market muffler. Parts diagrams show dual exhaust.
The tail is a 500. Doesn't match a 250.
I wonder if it came from Canada?

That muzzy itself is probably worth the $400 you paid! Congrats! And I believe it was always a Ninja also. I hear EX500 and Ninja 500 thrown around interchangeably no matter the year

Stock is dual muffler, but aftermarket may be 2:1.

Look at the engine for CC stamping, or measure TDC to BDC to get the stroke with the spark plug removed:

EX250:  http://www.rcramer.com/bikes/ex250/specs.shtml  62.0mm x 41.2mm
EX500:  http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/kawasaki/2000-kawasaki-ex500-15103.html  74.0 x 58.0mm

You can also dissect the VIN.  A VIN will tell you a lot about the bike.

That's all EX500- no 250 fairings on it. The EX500 came stock with a lower chin fairing, like in the pics Codajastal posted. The lower fairing you have is a Targa, Lockhart-Phillips, or some other knock-off brand add-on lower fairing. The pics you posted with lower fairings are custom pieces- the black bike it looks like they incorporated the OEM chin fairing into their lower- the blue/pink bike it looks like they added onto a Targa lower fairing to make it full coverage.  You did get a great deal there- that's an aftermarket  Muzzy full exhaust system,  it is $400 new- the lower fairing is $200 new.  Better motor, worse frame and suspension, 16" wheels and rear drum brake are old school- but still a fairly quick bike to hustle through the twistys. EX-500.com is the forum- good info and used parts available.

I've seen pictures with no lower. Painted right they look great.
I'll be seeing her this weekend at S.U.B.
A few parts ordered already, like new right peg mount as it broke when it was dropped. New rear fender (it was cut off and I don't like that unless done correctly.) Need good turn signals, other minor stuff.

I just signed up at ex-500. Same user name. Dang - wouldn't accept techno-cat as an avatar.

The ex-500.com  site  confirmed it is a Targa lower fairing. Fixable.
Some not fond of the Muzzy can. I was thinking of switching to Motad. I don't like loud bikes.
More later. Time to start a build thread.
