Title: fairings for a GS
Post by: anoopb on March 11, 2013, 11:37:24 AM
A friend of mine has a Yamaha RZ350 just like this one

http://texascycleusa.com/_images/84_rz350_34_600.jpg

I really dig that bikini thing and the thing on the bottom. What's that called?

Does anyone have this on a GS? Pics? I'd like to see what mine would look like.

thanks!

Can't see your picture. Links not allowed unless you upgrade your account.
Use photobucket of gs500.net

I think you mean a belly pan (bug spoiler in Europe) and a headlight cowling (aka cockpit fairing).

whoa! is that yours? junior?

that's sick! i want!

i searched for bikini and found a similar post from skidmarx across the pond.

are there any local companies? i should just post in the wanted section first i guess.

Skidmarx is the only one that I'm aware of. Other than that, keep checking ebay and the classifieds here for used OEM fairings. I was trying to sell mine for a while here, but no takers- so it went up on ebay and sold for $115. Good luck man!

You can post a want to buy.
That is a Skidmarx on Junior. No one in the US makes one for the GS500. There are generic ones that will fit. Anything that fits a 7" headlight would probably fit. Used ones do show up.

Belly pan is more bike specific because of mountings and how it fits around   the engine and exhaust. Gimbel makes one that is very close to the OEM one that you see on Junior. Skidmarx might still have one.

Original used OEM ones are now extremely hard to find. Others might be able to point you to some available.

WTB threads require patience

There was a sweet belly pan on ebay just a week or two ago, you just have to keep checking. As far as other fairings, several people have used Buell Blast headlight cowls and even Ducati Monster bikini fairings. Just about any cowl made for a 7" headlight could be modified to work. Belly pans, not so much.

Here's my OEM belly pan (with slight modifications)

The red bellypan is Skidmarx and the black is Powerbronze
The Headlight cowl is a universal off ebay from Nederlands and was quite cheap.

Shop around. There are more places besides M and P that sell Skidmarx. There's all kinds of stuff on ebay in Germany. many ship to the US.
Here's a new one and they ship. This Five Stars looks like it is related to TCP because of the style of the instruction sheet.

This one Europe only (you can ask, half the time they will because I have a superb ebay rating). Interesting this one is actually marked SUZUKI!

Another one of the same style. I haven't seen these before. It must be a NEW item?

12 Steps to being a successful parts whore on ebay

1. Find something. Anything.
2. Go to their ebay store.
3. Search for "GS500" or GM51B (sometimes GM51A) or all terms  "(GS500,gm51a,gm51b)"
4. Look at the parts and note the non-English words. Note other terms they use. Such as a belly pan can be a "bug spoiler" in Europe.
5. Search other sites using those terms. Sites such as ebay.co.uk, ebay.de (that's Germany)
6. Search and refine your search.
7. Always search the sellers store for other words, phrases and things you never knew existed. One search can branch out into lots of possibilities.
8. Search by copying and pasting non-English words. Search various sites for GS500 handle bars with this search string as an example: "(GM51B,gs500)  Lenker"  (Hint: German for handle bars!) For ebay.de, SCORE when you see "Weltweit" as that's shipping world wide. A few good search terms here: "Suzuki GS 500 E Lampenmaske Windschild Verkleidung". "lampenmaske"? Figure out that is a lamp mask/shield? "Windschild" is windshield? You'll lern that "Verkleidung" is for fairing parts.
Need fairing parts from the Netherlands?

9. At the end of a search, there is "Items from International Sellers" and that's sellers not in the country you're searching. Show all! That leads to more stores, parts and words.
10. Set email alerts for searches that are promising.
11. It never hurts to ask. I've picked up great deals: Hepco Becker racks for under $100. and then found the seller had the cases (not on ebay!) and I got those for another $100. That seller did not ship to the us - but did when I asked and offered full price. How did I get another GS500E new, original fairing? I asked if they would ship and included a picture of Junior so they knew I was really interested and not just wasting their time.
12. I should stop doing all this and really get a life!

There you have it. Secrets from the master parts whore. You will learn lots of German and other languages. Thailand is big for small bike parts like the TS-185. Nothing real or original comes out of China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. All knock-offs but some stuff is with it. Swing arm spools for $10 a pair with free postage? China wants our money! (We as a country are really in debt to China so I personally try to avoid giving them more of our US dollars.)
