yeah stupid car driver... but old mate on the bike should have been already reaching for the brakes as soon as the car came out of the driveway.... avoidable?!

Absolutely avoidable. Car was already exiting driveway and had probably decided it was clear to her left before the biker was coming out of the corner, At that point he had plenty of room to stop or go behind her.

Personally I would have stopped as her path was initially a bit unpredictable. Which lane or even side of the road was she heading for? I'd say she was pre-occupied looking to her right and across the road so she could take the slightly wide path around the barrier to the other side of the road.

Like us firefighters say, we have a split second to make a reaction, every one else as hours to tear it apart. Its easy to say he could have avoided it etc watching it on video, but when your actually there it's split second timing.

He clearly (as did i) thought the drive was puling into that line which clearly was the drivers first choice which is why the motorcyclist switched lanes, the driver then decided she would do a illegal U turn. The bike was moving at 35 mph when she turned in front of him. Also the woman accepted fault for the accident (like she had much choice from video).

Link to full story,  guy was heading to ask his girl to marry him (haha getting married, no wonder a car pulled in front of him).

I'm glad the rider emerged from the incident with only minor injuries and obviously the cage driver is at legal fault.  That said, someone should give him a copy of "Proficient Motorcycling" as an engagement present because that collision was absolutely avoidable.

Yeah this is like a perfect example of what you would see in the MSF course. Well to be fair in the MSF course the video would start with neon type saying "Lesson 1: Accident Avoidance" and the cheesy announcer would stop the tape right before the collision.

The only way this was avoidable was if he had stayed in the right lane. The same probably would have happened to me, given the fact that it initially looks like she is only turning onto the road, so it makes sense for him to switch lanes. After she starts turning across his lane he is too close to try and swerve around the back so his only option realistically at this point is to brake and slow as much as possible. Also, as to all the people saying "idiot cager blah blah blah" it is really really easy to not see things that you don't expect to be there, your brain literally tunes it out and you could stare right at it and it wouldn't register.

Well you would learn in rider safety that passing someone who just merged onto the road is a bad idea. Passing anyone who might not see you is a bad idea.

I think we all can agree he was not thinking clearly, after all he was heading to ask his girl to marry him(no fun intended, well a little). I'm sure his mind was racing on that subject. I have switched lanes on cars pulling out like that, but lucky for me no one around here is stupid enough to pull a illegal u turn like that. Here she would have got a few tickets along with accident report.

I do agree some what with the above about the mind blocking things out. I worked an accident with car vs train. The engineer told me that he seen the lady look right at him be for pulling across the tracks. Sadly the lady was not wearing a seat belt and was tossed into the back window as the car flipped 3 times (no she did not make it), if she had a seat belt she wold have possible only received minor injury.

Certainly the cars fault but as MSF teaches, scan ahead, predict and prepare an escape route.

On a positive note, at least he had riding gear on (helmet/jacket).
