This is going to be drawn out for a while as Im doing a little here and there. But here are the 89 clips ons I bought some time back, chemically stripped, sanded, used etching primer, painted a micro flake silver using a SataJet Digital 3000 with a 1.3 tip, clear coated and still have to wet sand, buff and polish.
In the meantime, here are some pics. Im waiting on more flake to come in as well as my House of Kolor Kandy Koncentrate KK01 Brandywine
Farings will be Kolor Kandy Koncentrate KK01 Brandywine also but the tank, calipers, rotorsect will be triple XXX Black with micro flake

Real nice, love the colors cant wait to see it all put together and sitting in the sun
Are those the clipons I sent you? They look so pretty :thumb:
Looking good weed
can't wait to see this thing all put together!!
Looks good Weed! Question for you. I want to respray my clipons black (top plate and bars). Any tips on how to do this and get great results using a spray can? There's some gouges in the top plate that I'll need to smooth out first.

Completely strip the paint. You can do this by using actual stripper but it is nasty stuff that will burn your skin and lungs. Since I paint all the time and have parts cleaners, I have lacquer thinner I use to soak the parts. You can buy it in 1 gallon cans at Walmart or Lowes. Do not but Mineral Spirits. It is not as strong.
Once it is stripped, take a small wire brush and with nitrile or heavier gloves, gently scrub any stubborn paint or grime.
From there, sand smooth with 320-400 grit. Use can use regular body filler to fill in deep scratches although I like to use a metal filler. Sand smooth and wipe it down with lacquer thinner and then a wax/degreaser
Then I would use etching primer (you can buy it in an aerosol can) and spray several thin coats. Build your coverage up but wait for it to be dry before the next coat.
After that I would wet sand with 400 so it will be smooth, wipe again with wax/degreaser, then I would paint.
Now, if you don't have a good gun or plan on buying one and want to use a can, check with a local paint supply store as most can put paint in a good aerosol can with a GOOD tip made to atomize paint in a finer mist than the cheap cans at regular stores. With that being said, Rustoleum works good.
Thank you sir! Once mother nature realizes its spring over her and starts acting like it, I'll give it a shot.

I'm following closely on this weed. :thumb:
I'm assuming you can't use paint stripper on the plastics and that you just hand sanded the tail?
all fairings (main engine fairing are done but not shown) were hit with a DA with 220 grit and then handed sanded with 400. Stickers were peeled, then alcohol wiped. Because the stickers on the tank were UNDER the clear. I used the DA with 80 grit to cut through the clear and remove the stickers to the bare metal. Then feather sanded the edges, scuffed the rest of the tank with 220/400 and used etching primer on the metal.
Chemically stripping paint on plastic wouldnt be good. Remember though, if the paint is already good, you dont have to strip it TO the plastic. Just scuff it with 400 and then do your primer.

Today.........I got my silver base laid down on the rear sets pieces, rear sprocket/hub and the F&R rotors.
I didnt get a chance to lay down primer on my fairings because I still had to work on my front cowl. As you can see from the pics I shaved down the plastic the rises above the cowl where the OEM turn stalks go. Being I dont have them there and dont want them there, I choose to shave smooth the plastic on the front and back side and plastic weld some ABS on the back. Evercoat G-grip filler goes on the front side and gets sanded smooth. Kinda like shaving door handles. This will make it look better IMO.

So I managed to get the filler smooth and feathered down on my cowl where I no longer have the front turn signals.
I got everything washed down, wiped with wax/degreaser remover and 2K primered. I used my Satajet gun to lay my primer and it came out really nice. I mean, it was really smooth. But I still wet sanded ith 1500 grit and it was even more smooth afterwards. Normally I would not have done this but being I am spraying flake and HoK Kandy, I really want everything to be its best so it shows in the end.
After my wet sanding, I cleaned everything again. Then I sprayed my silver base coats and let that dry. Then I mixed some or the red, orange and gold flake I had ordered and put it in my intercoat (clear) and sprayed it. I tried to take pics but the camera really didnt pick it up good. Tomorrow I will spray 2 more coats of clear and let that fully cure. Then I get to wet sand that smooth and polish it. After that comes the KANDY!
Oh, here are a few pics

One more pics of the rear seat cowl after clear on the flakes and my new 7/8 bars came in today. I had to notch them to fit in the 89 top clamp. My new grips also came in which are now on the bars.
So overall, the front and rear rotors, rear sprocket and hub, rear fairings, side fairings, front cowl and rear sets have been painted and clear coated and Im only 50% done so far.
Im 1.5 qrts of silver and 2 qrts of clear. I suspect Ill still use another 2 qrts of clear over the next two stages.

Very nice :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
The paint looks awesome.
I thought the 89's interfered with the 01+ tanks. Or is that the euro ones?
Yeah. I'm happy with how it has turned out so far. I will be wet sanding the clear tonight and polishing all over the next two days or so. Unfortunately, I have to get caught up on other projects I'm doing for customers.
As for the clip ons, they have to be shimmed out and off the top clamp for extra clearance. I haven't don't it yet because I still have to drill holes and mount the controls and I won't do that until I can get it all back together and sit on it to feel for the placement of where they need to be
I have another video I uploaded to youtube and will post here later
Drooling over that paint mang! Coming together really nice. I'll have the tail fairings in the mail today
What are your plans for mounting the rear cowl? Using cowltech's tabs, going with nuts/bolts, or something special?
IDK yet, I was thinking some industrial velcro?
Ohh that's something i didn't think about! Smart thinkin, that stuff is tough and i think it would hold well.
I didn't like the fit of mine over the stock seat foam. So I got a spare seat, trimmed down the foam and the plastic pan, then drilled holes so i can bolt cowl to the seat. That way if i want to ride 2 up, i just turn the key pop the seat off and put on my oem style seat. It works well, but I do wish there weren't any bolt heads showing on the cowl.
You cam always get some cosmetic bolt head caps to go over them and hide some of them.
Geez, I bet I have 15+ hours so far in just the wet sanding of everything and polishing of the clear coat. Im using a Griot mini 3" buffer and 3M Perfect-It 3 step polishing compounds (Rubbing compound, Machine polish and then Ultra Machine Polish). I was hoping to have everything finished cut and buffed tonight so I can paint more tomorrow. Well see.......
Well, the chromed Katana rims are on with the Sportec M3's. My Bandit 1200 rear hugger is on also. I did trim it a little as originally it covered too much IMO. Brake calipers were painted a gloss black and three stage coated with triple xxx black micro flakes. The rear brake arm is a Bandit 1200 so to have room for the 160 tire. Rotors were also painted as was the rear sprocket and hub.
GSXR 1100 rear sets are on also. New brake pads on the front and rear.

Damn my friend. am envious. that colour is giving me some ideas for the battlepig. ( thinking a theme build @ some point soon. either this colour or the one used on friends gransporta very dark charcoal. nearly black, but some flake/pearl
Thanks. All my mechanical parts are together and everything else is buttons up and torqued with blue loctite. Mufflers are not on nor the plastics because Im working on some lighting. Once that done I will feel better.
Also, one thing I ran into today.........at home, my bike is always parked in a front tire chock. The OEM tire is 130/70/17 and my Sportec M3 is 160/60/17 and when I pulled the bike out today to clean it up a bit I noticed when on the side stand, it had a very severe lean angle now.I mean I was worried it was going to fall over it was so bad. I thought it odd being I went from a 70 series tire to a 60. My side stand was shortened a half inch some time back (another thread on that too) so I thought about ordering a new stand off ebay. But then I remembered my lowering links so I lowered it but really didnt like it. In fact, it made my rear hugger lay right up against the rear wire fender. So I lifted it back up and bought a side stand off ebay for $15 shipped. Always a problem somewhere :(
those Rims!!... got any shinier!!?? ;) :flipoff:
looks good!!
Just wait, it gets better.
I know this might now be for everyone but it is my bike. Im way way too deep into it so oh well. At least it is my time and materials and not me paying a shop to do it for me
My new 2way alarm is installed. I got the front cowl on and windshield. My switches are wired. One of these controls the halo in my headlight. The second controls the lights on my body and fairing while the third controls the lights on my rims. Everything is torqued down. All my electrical is finished and tested. Tomorrow if the weather is good I will take it out for a spin. My main side fairings wont get added until I verify everything else is good. Also, me new OEM length kickstand came in yesterday so I put it on also

Got a question my friend, how is it you make the electrical connection to the rim lights? with the rotation and all?
Magic. It is something we sell although not locally as phuckers around here are too cheap.
Here is a video of my truck though
To answer your question though, we use electric motor motor brushes to touch a custom floating ring on the wheel and to transfer power to the lights on the wheel(s)

i used to wire my lights into an amplifier connected to audio. so lights would flash with music.
Yeah, there are lots of different modules to add on and let you do those kinds of things
That is really cool looking although I would not do that to my bike. How are the laws where you live about that kind of lighting on vehicles??
Like I said, I sell these kits and sells hundreds per year. At events and shows, we sell and install. While it is always good to check with your local law enforcement, I can pretty much promise you cannot use blue or red while driving on the road. Any other color is fine as it does not "mimic" law enforcement.

most locations if not directly visible, blue or red is okay. BUT guaranteed you WOULD get attn from them whether wanted or not.
Latest and last pics.
Everything is finished for the most part. I still have to put on my fork brace and new right side engine cover. I have a tank pad that still has to go on. A few chrome spikes still have to get added. Sonic springs still need to be added.
I took it out for a test drive today and it run great (not that is ever didnt). The shift linkage works really good. It seems to shift easier and better. I DO NOT like the spring loaded foot pegs as they slightly fold up when your feet are not on them so when you do put your feet on them, you have to do it just right or you will fold them up completely. Not cool. I will work that out later though.

I like the silver. It's definitely different. What happened to that entire thread devoted to color choice? This wasn't even one of them was it? I'm not a fan of the spikes (or chrome in general) but to each his own.

......phuckers around here are too cheap.
a while back i had tried to sell the gtr ( the goped) i agree with your comment. they see the walmart chinese scooters and live by that rule. your light kit, ( like the gopeds) are far from chinese quality ( it appears to me anyways) which is why i decided to keep what ive got.
Spikes are not my thing either but they are at least a step above stock bolts (which I dislike even more)
The original color was silver base and flakes but then to add House of Kolor Brandywine on top. The problem is Im taking the bike out of town for Bike Week on the 1st week of May and simply dont have enough time to complete the next several steps.
I would have to lay 4-5 coats of Kandy, let that cure, lay at least 2-3 (maybe 4) solid coats of clear, let that cure, then wet sand with 1500 and cut/buff/polish
Looks Waaaay better than a stock GS500f. I like the color & the decal-less look also. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
In the pics it just looks silver but in person and in the sun it looks amazing. I have a video showing everything I have done to it but I have to add a clip to it and then upload it
Insanely awesome progress Weed!!  :woohoo: :woohoo:
It may not be ever persons style, but the attention to detail and amount of customization while still maintaining that sexy gsF look(not looking too over the top) is mind boggling good
Loving the color, the black/silver scheme pulls together so nicely with the black fender, seat, frame, and calipers. Color matching the rotor was a nice touch as well. My only gripe is the rear sets color- wish they were a little darker to match the engine's color.
Great work again, inspires me to get something done on my gs project.
You know what though, I'm one step ahead of you. I have two sets of engine covers here on the shelf. At first I was going to strip and painted them. Then I decided I might send them out to be chromed. Then I did t know how that would look either so I haven't decided anything although something will be done eventually.
What are your thoughts on it?
I think the engine covers would look good chromed. Would tie in with the wheels. I would leave the rearsets the way they are.
Hmm....maybe I should run a poll on it and get votes :tongue2:
Not sure if i've ever said this.. I think the chrome would like great on the engine covers!! Would definitely set nicely and wouldn't clash with the rearset, would even help the rearsets since they match with the controls perfectly.
Thought about painting the forks? Would overdo the front if blacked out, but they seem to be begging for some attention! haha
I'm not personally a fan of chrome, however the engine covers being chromed would tie in nicely with the wheels/exhaust. So I vote chrome.
Steezin, the forks are going to get painted. I have an extra set here I have to take apart, put Sonic springs and seals in and the paint of course. It wont happen for another couple of weeks though
A few more pics. The rear seat cowl is not attached. It is just sitting on the seat in case anyone is wondering.

I have another thread on that exhaust and pics. There is even a full video on YouTube covering all of it
Has to be the first GS I've ever seen with dual exhaust. Very unique.
I hope to be able to do some more vids of it soon
Looks awesome.
