Title: My First Post About My First GS
Post by: LoBuk on March 17, 2013, 07:11:45 PM
Earlier this year I picked up my 95 GS as a non runner for less than $500 that was sitting in a friends barn for over a year. Initial symptoms according to him was low compression in one cylinder (running poorly). He rebuilt the carbs and through out the air box. His plan was to do a "cafe" with the bike but he ran out of resources. I did a compression test and both cylinders were putting out the same number. From there I did a valve adjustment, I think the right side intake may be a little tight still. During the valve adjustment process I notices that one of the pick ups on the signal generator was bent, this was straightened back to the correct location. From there being that the bike had been sitting and the battery needed replacement I replaced the battery however I still ran into some odd electrical issues which I traced to the fuse holder next to the starter relay, the terminals were rather loose and not properly holding the fuse, this was repaired.

And now for the fun part. Being that the bike had been sitting and fuel was left in the tank I drained it and set it to the side. I then rigged up a temporary tank and introduced fuel to the system and hit the starter switch. It cranked and cranked and cranked and finally sputtered to life. The carbs popped and the idle was all over the place and several hours later here is what I found. 1. the clamps for the carb to intake were loose. 2. the little o rings diaphragm covers were missing. 3. the vacuum  line that should come off the left side carb and goes to the petcock was attached to the right side carb and obviously not pulling vacuum. Once these three issues were resolved I was able to synch the carbs.

During the process of moving the bike around my garage I found that there was a lot of drag, turns out the front caliper was dragging. I retracted the pistons fully and replaced the fluid, which as the color of a nice amber ale and it seems to be much better. Just for good measure I flushed the fluid on the rear as well.

Now for the questions.

1. Air filtration, what is the best route to go here? The bike has a Yoshimura slip on so I was thinking of going with the lunchbox.
2. The vent line that comes off the carbs, where exactly is this to be routed? It was missing on my bike.
3. Emissions controls, it seems like most of this was already removed but it doesn't look like it was done correctly. Any tips?
4. Brake pads, the fronts were rather thin, I would like to replace them, any recommendations?
5. Integrated tail light, any recommendations? I'm not a huge fan of the massive stalks that the signals are on.
6. Jetting. Considering the slip on and a non stock filter what is recommended.

Thanks for providing a new community.

The carb vent should be routed around between the airbox and the battery. Since you may not be going with an air box, just make sure it is in that area and out of the wind otherwise it will fuel starve the carbs.

Brakes. Some folks buy sets of calipers from newer bikes or lower mileage from eBay bike breakers such as pinwall cycles. You get decent pads and it sure beats rebuilding any.

You might want to try K&N air filters. Practically everybody on here has one. Re-jet is not exactly needed but it is definitely nice to do. People have done threads about re-jetting with K&N's and slip on's. As for blinkers, what year is your bike? There are plenty of people who make integrated taillights for each years. For 89-00 models I would suggest the 99 YZF R-1 taillight. Plenty of integrated taillights for that bike on ebay, and they look alot better than the red brick. Good buy, keep this thread updated and post pictures!!!!! :woohoo:

Thanks for all the great pointers. I'll check out the Yamaha tail light option.

Being that I doubt I'll find the air box for the bike at my friends house, I'll probably just go with the K&N filter, it makes sense. The re-jet I'll hold off on for the time being.

The brakes I have no problem doing a caliper rebuild.

Regarding pictures, ehh, I'll pass on posting anything right now as the bike looks like a bag of sh!t. At least one of the previous owners decided to paint the bike and did a flat black rattle can job on all the plastic and the fuel tank. The fuel tank's paint is cracked and looks awful.

Thanks again.
