Title: cold starting
Post by: foodman123 on March 19, 2013, 05:25:39 AM
When the temp gets down below 40 degrees, my bike just doesn't want to start.

I have a Shorei lithium battery which I now remove every time I park  the bike.

Installing nice warm fully-charged battery, it starts instantly.

Any ideas?

Shorai batteries are notorious for bad starts in the cold... otherwise they are great batteries, but they just don't do well in the cold.  There are a few tricks to get the battery warmed up fast though... Try turning on the brights for about 10 secs, wait a bit, try the brights again, wait a bit, and then try to start the bike.  This will get some juice running through it and warm the battery without discharging it much.

Cold batteries do not have the power that warm batteries do.

Also, cold engines have oil that's like honey.  Couple that with a cold battery, and it cranks slower.

I try starting for 10 seconds. Then wait 15-30 seconds. Try again.
Usually the 3rd repeat she/he starts.
