Title: Exhaust bracket for V&H?
Post by: Watevaman on March 23, 2013, 09:32:36 AM
Well guys, full time riding season is getting closer and closer here in VA so I'm making sure to fix all the potential things that may go wrong with my old and beaten GS and the exhaust is one of them.

Whoever installed the V&H on my bike did a poor job and the bolt that they used on the can itself was actually what broke my brake line in the previous thread I made. The whole upper part of the bracket f%&ked up so it's pretty much impossible to use that part. Pictured below is my temporary solution that I'm afraid may be a bad idea:

What this solution allows is for some movement as the upper part of the bracket that is below the passenger peg can move freely (the bolt on the can itself is a carriage bolt). I believe if I added some more washers I may be able to tighten it up but therein lies my question: is there supposed to be movement? I hear something rattle when I go over bumps but I'm not certain where it's coming from (seems engine area, at least in front of me) so I'm not sure if it's where the exhaust meets the engine. I know it's bad to have movement there as it can mess up the head.

I'm hoping maybe someone can shed some light on the bracket that should be there and help me find one.

get a hole to hole measurement, cut some 1/8" steel and drill holes. Round it off paint it up and bam looking good again, maybe put some rubber on both connection points.

I'm not even sure that would work. There's still be some forward/back movement, right?

This is what I have to work with:

and if I'm not careful, I think the carriage bolt I used for my current setup will tear that groove up too so I would rather see how it's done on a regular bracket.

Would it help to see pictures of how a V&H is supposed to be installed?
Junior has one. I can take pictures tonight.

That'd be nice to have, yeah.
