is it just me? I click on a new post indicator and read the thread and click on the Jump-Go button at the bottom to return and find the new post indicator is still there unless I hit the refresh and then it's gone. Same after I read all new threads in the section and return to the Main Area and have to refresh again to remove the indication that there are new posts in that just cleared section. Sorry I can't put it in proper computer geek language, if I live to 90 I'll park the bike and take a course! :icon_lol:
If you're just using the back button in your browser, it's always been like that for me. Old host and all. :dunno_black:
Actually I rarely use the back button on the forum, I just hit the "GStwin.com GS500 Message Forum" live link at the top to go back to index area.
I check about 10 forums every morning and at least 2 are php forums like we are now and there are no problems on them.
Works fine for me on a Mac Pro in Chrome browser.
I'm on Internet Explorer 10.

There's your problem....using the browser that Microsoft wants you to use, whether it works or not. :icon_lol:
I'm using Google Chrome on my Windows laptop and all is working properly.
I have this same problem, gsJack. Also, sometimes I can see that there is a new post in a thread because there is a new name under 'last posted' or I get the email alert and read the new post through that. But when I click on the thread, there isn't a new post. This even happens when I post something myself.. I can't see my own new post in the thread either.

I am not seeing anything. I use firefox though.
Let me just say this. The migration was basically a clone. We did not reinstall the board and graft the database into it, we simply moved the whole thing. So all of the scripts are the same scripts, the DB was untouched. This is why I chose this new host. They offered to just copy the whole thing and move it.
Seems like others here are seeing odd things. Maybe a cache issue in IE? Maybe clearing your cache would clear things.
Can some of you smart web savvy people offer advice? Because I am at a loss.
What's wrong with editing my post?

If using back button, even in Firefox, it will still have the NEW icon unless you refresh the page.
The cache is doing it. When you go back, it just restores the previous page.
Some web sites are designed that "back" causes a page reload, or the site signals the browser not to cache pages. I know the message board on my company site is that way. I can read a post, it back, and the NEW indicator is gone.
This board has always operated the way you describe.
You can set your browser to NOT cache pages, but then you run slower.
Board operates as before in Firefox, IE or iPad (sanitary napkin for your visual organs).
No its more than that just hitting the back button... Agreed, that has always happened.
It doesn't matter if I refesh the page or not, new icons are still there, and I can't read 'actual' new posts even though there is a new name for 'last poster' ...
In fact, I can't see adidasguy's new post that I am replying to right now... I only know it is really there because I got it in my email.. hopefully he has not edited his post! LOL

Edit to my last post above, since I cannot see it...

OK this is strange, but my new host sends out daily tips by email. This came in this morning at 10:45AM...
For those that may not know. IE does not always work will with sites that are known to use cache software.
(This part is for IE users to do)
To help IE browser along the way please try the below Please be sure to have all tabs closed:
internet options->general->browsing history->check all->delete
(this part is for me to do on the admin side)
SMF Settings:
Server Settings-> Cookies and Sessions
Use database driven sessions-> check
Allow browsers to go back to cached page-> un check
Server Settings-> Caching-> No cachingimprovement using the caching feature.
Info on our caching software:
Varnish: is an HTTP accelerator designed for content-heavy dynamic web sites. In contrast to other HTTP accelerators, such as Squid, which began life as a client-side cache, or Apache and nginx, which are primarily origin servers, Varnish was designed as an HTTP accelerator. Varnish is focused exclusively on HTTP, unlike other proxy servers that often support FTP, SMTP and other network protocols.
eAccelerator: Having a caching system in place can help speed up your website. Usually, eAccelerator works in an environment where traffic volume is high and the code base to be executed is small but frequent. APC is especially good for use with caches that do not change often and will not grow to large. PHP must be parsed, compiled and executed every-time a script is called. eAccelerato will store the compiled code for execution so there is not a need to parse and compile the code over again
I will be making the changes momentarily... Don't see how it can hurt.
After John's first post above I went to Deleting Browsing History and checked off and deleted everything, temporary internet files, cookies, history, download history, passwords, etc. No change it still worked like I described above.
After Addys post I opened Internet Options and under Browsing History I clicked on Settings. Checked search for newer versions everytime I visit a webpage. Was previously set on Automatically. That fixed it for me, good to go for now as it was before the forum move. No more need to refresh to keep it up to date on read and unread items. I'll see how it goes on the other forums I visit particularly the php based ones and on other browsing in general.
I just replaced an old Celeron based puter with a new dual Pentium based Dell and our connection was upgraded to 20 meg speed recently so I don't think browsing speed will be a problem.
Added: Just saw John's latest post as I was posting this, will read.
Jack: this part is for IE users: (as in for you to do)
To help IE browser along the way please try the below Please be sure to have all tabs closed:
internet options->general->browsing history->check all->delete
The rest of the stuff was for me to do on the server. Which I have done now.
I deleted all that after reading your first post above, John. It was still working the same as in my first post above after I deleted it but after reading and thinking about Addys post I made the change to search for newer versions as described in my last post above.
internet options->browsing history->settings-> search for newer versions every time
Works perfectly fine for me
I use the latest Maxthon
OK, all done now I think, my temporary fix above worked good for me until John made the changes he outlined to be done on the admin side but it seemed to me my change should be unnecessary after John was done. I just changed it back like it always was before and all is good now. I pronounce the forum move to now be completely done! :thumb: :icon_lol:
internet options->browsing history->settings->search for newer versions every time changed back to internet options->browsing history->settings->automatically
Thanks John.
Well people much smarter than me came up with that bulletin.
My new host seems pretty good. Two newsletters have had timely and helpful info.
What irony! Working great now. Thanks John!

I have noticed one difference today.
After posting a message, I often use BACK twice (old fart laziness or whatever).
It used to be the first BACK would take me back to where I typed the message, with the message on the screen. Now it takes me back to a blank message entry screen with the message that "while you're typing someone else was typing....."
And now the 2nd BACK takes me to the topic refreshed with the new message. Before it took me back to the old thread and I had to refresh to see my message added.
Sort of meh.... either way is OK.
I suspect that now you have the automatic refresh of pages, which is good.
Yea, good and bad I guess. I never use the back button because I know how to internet.
I use the back button because it's there! :icon_lol:
Ban the back button John! :icon_lol:
Another related problem John. Did a search and got a list of replies. Clicked on one to read and then when I hit the back button to select another I got a page expired message. If I hit refresh and then retry in pop up box I went back to a previous search not the one I was now on. So I reset the automatically to search every time in internet options settings like I had it for a while yesterday and when I tried again to go back from a search reply to the list and got an expired message a refresh and retry brought me back where I wanted to go on the current search list. Good enough, search usable, but not quite right yet I think?
