After a very stupid crash in my local canyons, my dear GS ended up with some broken legs. But fear not! We have the technology! She will be rebuilt!
Started the tear down tonight and found:
-Badly bent forks
-Snapped all four fasteners on my Buddha fork brace
-Bent brake rotor
-Crushed speedo sensor
-Cracked gauge backing
-Tweaked lower triple and possibly upper also
-Bent Axle bolt
So... I am pretty much leaning towards a total front end swap to something more modern. Anyone out there with some experience willing to chime in on which USD forks I should be looking at? This will be a Canyon/track bike so I am not very concerned with ultimate practicality. Just looking for a little guidance on where to begin this.
Dammit man, you must have hit the front end pretty hard!
Are you wanting OEM forks or something different? Ive seen stock forks over on ebay UK for less than here in the US
I want to move to a full swap from a GSXR 600. There seem to be a lot of options out there. I am just not sure if there are some years that are more straightforward than others.
So... This project hit the backburner for a bit. But the time has come to get this basketcase sorted out. The good part is, I have a full front end from a 2003 R6 sitting in my garage. It is a conventional style fork, fully adjustable, Bigger front wheel, and large dual front disks.
I would really love to get this thing mounted onto my GS. According to the conversion chart http://www.allballsracing.com/index.php/forkconversion it looks like the appropriate spacing can be done via bearings.
My main issue looks to be the steering stem length. The R6 has a much longer steering stem. Is it generally a safe practice to put a longer stemmed front end on a bike with a shorter steering head? Ill get pics and measurements posted up if this is a do-able swap. I am not opposed to farming out some machine work if that is required either.
Anyone have any guidance here? Looking forward to getting My first bike rolling again with spiffy new legs!
By chance, can you press out both stems and swap them? The GS stem would need to fit the R6 top clamp to work though.
How much longer is the R6 stem? I'd say 1/8" -1/4" taller could be overcome pretty easily, but remember it is another piece of steel in front of you if you crash....

Thanks Slack! Good to be back. I dont plan on ever getting rid of my first bike which means that I'll never be gone for long.
