I was contemplating putting a lunchbox on my GS but leaving the stock exhaust in place.
has anyone done this?
The advantages are obviously better performance and a faster bike. Does it sound better with a lunchbox? I know my car used to make a kickass whirring sound with a k&n filter and a CAI.
As far as the carbs, I'm reading that I have to have it rejetted. Saying as I can take my bike apart now and take the carbs off, i'm wondering how hard the rejetting process is. Is it as simple as replacing the pilot and main jet and adjusting the pilot mixture screws?
What size jets are recommended for this setup?
Also, i'm thinking about painting my stock exhaust and making it all black. I read that grill paint was fairly durable. Anyone have any experience with it?
I painted my exhaust black with the HRT paint?
Worked a treat.

looks like it has a bit of a shine to it...
i was thinking of going matte black.
did you just paint the can or the whole things including headers?
did you take the chrome piece off or just paint over that as well?
The paint comes in Matte Black as well as many other colours
I painted the headers as well as the exhaust.
Paint straight over chrome as they are there to deflect heat so should not be removed.
I painted over the matte black with high gloss that is why the shine
I ran with with lunchbox and stock exh with stock jets for a long time
Rejetting is simple. Pull carbs, remove float bowls, inspect o-rings and replace if necessary, unscrew old jets, insert new jets, replace o-ring and attach float bowls.
After that you need to remove the brass plug to get access to the mixture screws. There is a chart on the wiki with suggested turns.

Thanks weeds. Did you rejet with the new exhaust then?
If I don't need to rejet, then that makes the lunchbox decision even easier.

Oh i'm not worried about rejetting. I'm wondering what size jets i would need. Fortunately, the pilot mixture screws are already accessible.
Definitely a change in sound, especially when under load. THe engine can finally breath.
I also got a 14 inch drill bit and drilled through the first plate in the stock can. It opened the exhaust up a teensy bit, made a noticeable difference. Not huge, but noticeable.
I've got dynojet 128 mains, and the rest of the dynojet guts in mine.

I did not actually. I only rejetted later because I wanted a bit more power and it made sense to do it sense I had made other changes.
Thanks Weeds.
so if i wanted to rejet after installing the lunchbox, how do i go about figuring out what size jets i need?
i'm assuming that performance is better even without a rejet?
does it sound different with a lot more air going in?
did you get a breather valve too like the wiki?
