Hello everyone,
I am new to riding and im sure i am guaranteed to put the bike down at some time. I have a 1990 gs500e and i am looking into getting either frame sliders or just an engine guard for when the unfortunate inevitable happens. I searched and saw a few options that people have (t-rex sliders, r&g sliders) and i was wondering what people prefer and why. i think on a naked bike that the engine guard looks more in place than the sliders but i could be convinced otherwise. What do people recommend sliders or guards and what type/brands are best? Thanks in advanced for the input.
Engine guards are best but are just too big for a sports bike IMO. I choose T-rex sliders because I wanted to protect the engine rather than R&G that I think protect the fairings?
Either way, easier to replace a fairing than an engine side.
Engine guards on a 1990 naked bike. I had them on my 97 and moved them to my 02. Also a good place to mount some forward pegs if you get to doing 400-500 mile Interstate days you'll want to stretch a leg now and then without extra stops.

Engine guards on a 1990 naked bike.
Do you know of the brand or where you got them from?
I looked here:
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/CaseGuards (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/CaseGuards)
I liked the MC ones but when i went to their website they didn't seem to have them. Anyone got one they want to get rid of?
I got mine from a Suzuki dealer years ago but they don't have them anymore. There was a bunch of those shown in the wiki but I think we bought them all out. Probably best to search e-bay for some now for a bike that old. My 02 was last naked GS sold in this country, only the F models since then with fairings.
I always liked the SW-MOTECH guards but they are too pricey now at Twisted Throttle:

There are:
Renntec (they even survive a fire! - inside GStwins joke) Will fit on F models
SW Motec - really nice, not usable on F models. Only naked bikes
R&G Frame sliders (my favorite, also works on F models)
T-Rex sliders (I haven't used them)
A chrome set similar to SW Motec (I have a set and can't give them away so I'll paint them black)
A company in the Netherlands makes more of an adventure style. I have a set but have not used them.
Many are available from Europe and with shipping, cheaper than in the US.
www.intobikes.co.uk has some Renntec stuff, including rear carriers.
There are other companies in Europe that sell a wider variety of parts than you will find in the USA.
Hepco & Becker makes a set in a slightly different style. They only work on the naked models. German made like everything else.
Engine guards definitely prevent more damage than sliders. Personally, I like the look but some don't find them sporty enough.
I just received these yesterday.
Ordered WITHOUT any logo..........very nice too. :)

Hey gsJack, those dont look big or bad at all.
Those are nearly identical to R&G sliders.
I do really like these:

I have a naked bike so fitting a crash guard on is not a problem however i was hoping it would be a little cheaper than $180. Ill keep looking around for a deal.
Does anyone know if these would work for a 1990:

Has anyone dealt with this seller any issues shipping abroad (Im from the states)?
Those are the OEM bars and fit any naked GS500.
