Title: Tomorrow is the day
Post by: NjDan on April 07, 2013, 08:11:22 PM
So I passed my msf course and got a road test waiver. After class tomorrow am going to head up to dmv and take care of the endorsement. Once thats done heading home and grabbing the bike very exciting. Although I am a tad bit nervous because we took our course on vstars and now after riding the whole weekend on a cruiser sitting on my bike feels strange...guess I just have to ride it out and get used to it is all.

First stop on your bike should be a big, empty parking lot. Practice what you learned in the course on your bike. Practice the life saving techniques first, such as swerving and braking. Practice straight line quick stops and practice your braking in curves techniques. Practice the different swerve techniques to really get the feel of your bike and its leaning characteristics. Learn the feel of your gear changes. Get your clutch control down before leaving that parking lot. Break in that bike in the parking lot before it breaks you in on the road.

Ride easy around your neighborhood.
Never any reason NOT to go to a parking lot or MSF course.
After rebuilding a bike, I go to the MSF course on Friday or Saturday when it is coned off just to get the feel of the bike. No cars to worry about and the line on the pavement are fun to ride around.

So i went around the neigborhood due to not many open lots during the day and just rode didnt know where i was going just explored :) it was a nice ride now i feel a little more confident on the bike especially with turns and such..i mthink i might be releasing the clutch to fast bc sometimes i get some bogging in first not much but a little until the bike gets to about 7 mph

this is some of the best advice ever. kudos sir.

new rider, forget the road. get the controls and PANIC STOPS mastered. when you feel you've mastered slow speed maneuvers, GO HOME. end each and every ride on a positive, learning note. every ride. short and sweet.

have you dropped the bike yet ? might as well get that over with, in the grass. learn what is going to break, and how to pick it up properly. it's not a big deal, EVERYONE DROPS BIKES.

pre-ride checks. do them. every. single. time:

tire pressure
oil level (after warming)
gas level
leaks ?
wheel bearings
brakes
gear ?
rider composition/attitude ? this is extremely important. if you're mad, nervous, anxious, POLISH, but don't ride. wait till you're ready.

FIND A RIDER COACH AND MAKE HIM YOUR FRIEND.

Hey I didn't know there were a few people close to me... I'm over in Newark. Where did you take the msf course? I took it this past weekend also! Although my bike is currently in pieces and I've been riding my brothers triumph.
