Title: Slip's vlogs updated weekly: Brisbane Bike Moments Episode 3
Post by: slipperymongoose on April 13, 2013, 03:39:14 AM
Hey all, I got myself a gopro 3 silver a couple weeks ago and thought I might do a vlog inspired by a few local guys in South East Queensland plus a few of the more famous international ones. Its just a very quick one but I'm reasonably happy with it and with more practise less ummm's n ahhhh's.

Pretty good stuff. I like the camera height. It lets us see pretty much everything you'd see, just keep the height in mind I guess if you wanted to show something far above the horizon. Where's your mic located in your helmet? I did a quick comparo with some footage I took this weekend on the highway and there's a little bit more wind noise in your video.

Subbed too.

Cheers. Yeah I worked out quick that my camera needs to be tilted just a little bit higher. As far as my mic goes i used my iPhone earbuds plugged into my phone using the voice memo app, the mic of the earbuds sat between my cheek and cheek pad. If I had to continue using that setup I would put the mic in the pad itself.

And cheers for the sub too.

Slips I got a better peeve you should have used. Cyclists. Not you average ride to the shop/work cyclist but your Lycra wearing, Tour De France wanna be, hey we ride 3 abreast and block lanes of traffic, screw the designated bike lane I'm riding in the middle of the road arrogant prick cyclist.

At first I was sort-of feeling like "ehh...yeah that's kinda what you get for riding a bicycle in an area YOU KNOW is heavily trafficked by fast-moving vehicles/bikes."

Then I heard how much of a little crybaby he was being over a little road rash. This guy totally deserved that. 100%

I thought from how much he was moaning and crying he broke a bone or something. Just being a total wuss.

Also, I LOVE how melodramatic all those cyclists were being. This is what this world is coming to.

I never said they had no right. It's just stupid in my opinion. Why ride somewhere where you know the chances are high that you'll endanger someone's life, not including your own? It's like going out into the ocean where there's a bunch of sharks. Sure, you've got a "right" to be there, but you can't say you didn't know better if you get half-eaten.

Couldn't disagree with you more there, Kijona...
As someone pointed out before, the bicycles have every right to be there.
You (the motorcyclist) has to look ahead: there can be an obstacle (bicycle, rocks, other biker that went down,...) behind the next bend.
I understand the joy of swooping from  apex to apex in a perfect line, I just don't do it on public roads, unless I have a perfect line of sight.   If you really want to do that, take it to the track.

Secondly: Did we even watch the same video?
The guys isn't being melodramatic about anything: he's lucky his spine didn't snap in half!

I cycle up a few Alps and Pyrenees every year, and I have to share the road with other bikes and bicycles all the time.
Saying that the bicycles shouldn't be there 'because there's so many bikes around' ???
That like saying bikes shouldn't be on the road because there are vans and cars around,
'cause guess what: If they make a mistake and crash into you, guess who's screwed then?  :nono:

Now now, hold your horses. Again, they have a right to do it. I am not arguing that point.

The point I'm making is that stretch of road is KNOWN for fast drivers and wrecks and everything else. Why in the hell would you get on your bicycle and ride through there? It's like walking down the middle of the street. It's dumb. Not only does it endanger your OWN life, it endangers other peoples'. What if because you were riding on a blind curve, someone was killed?

Example: You're riding around a blind curve. Car comes around the corner at normal speed, not speeding or racing or anything like that. They don't see you because there was no WAY to see you, and swerve out of the way to keep from hitting you. In the process, they crash into another cyclist or motorcyclist and kill them. That would make me feel like a total piece of shaZam!, just saying. And I'd have other thoughts about entitlement on roadways.

You made an analogy about motorcycles and cars/vans. True, however the motorcycle doesn't pose a serious hazard to other people. Bicycles do, due to the fact that they move so much slower than traffic. You can picture the scenario I gave you and understand what I mean.

And by "you" I mean anybody. Where -you- ride might be different but still, I would never take my bicycle on the road for many reasons, some of which I just gave you. You do as you want - that's your prerogative.

And there was nothing wrong with the guy, dude. He was crying like a little baby over some road rash; and when I said melodramatic, I meant the other guys, acting like it's a f%$king tragedy when the guy is CLEARLY okay.

And if nothing else, again, it's a huge inconvenience to everyone when you clog up traffic on a busy road with your "entitlement riding." They do that sort of crap here in Atlanta - riding 3-4 deep and taking up an entire lane, riding at 5-6mph. You can't get around them, and it causes a huge frustration for EVERYONE. Then they want to do stupid shaZam! like run stop signs and red lights and split lanes and all these other shenanigans. Sorry, you want to be on the road you have to follow the rules like EVERYBODY else. That means you're not allowed to run stop signs or split lanes (lane splitting/filtering is illegal here).

Post by: W79 on May 18, 2013, 04:23:28 AM
Not arguing with you on the cyclists who ride three abreast.  Some people do that over here in Belgium too, and they obviously irritate people too, because A) they  hold up traffic immensely and B) it's illegal: you're supposed to stay to the right of the road.

But these guys weren't doing that.
I still think that a rider should be prepared for anything around the next bend.  Even on Mulholland.

Your argument about blind turns?
You should approach a blind turn at a very slow speed.  If you come around that blind turn on your bike, see a bicycle, and have to swerve to avoid it, thereby causing an accident, then YOU're at fault.  Not the guy cycling there.

And about them being melodramatic: I watched the video again, three times over.  I don't see anyone acting up.
IMHO they're taking it pretty well...

And - finally- the 'entitlement riding'.  I'm not sure what you mean by that exactly, but I'm assuming you mean that certain cyclists 'claim' the road, just because they have the right to be there?  (correct me if I'm wrong...).   I can see that being an issue, but - again- I don't think that's what these two guys were doing.    I think you saying they shouldn't be there  because that stretch of road is known for fast motorcycles, is a better example of 'entitlement riding'.

Bottom line: never take a motorcycle up to speeds that leave no room for error/emergencies/corrections...
Just my 2 cents.  Don't want to keep arguing and make this into a yes/no-game.

also as a former cyclist myself where do i ride if no shoulder? or in such poor shape its not rideable?the rules mainly are since youve got to share lanes with vheicles/motos, you MUST keep with traffic. if unable to do so, then keep to right. aka slow lane. i think my scott waimea ( and its engine) was hte only bicycle which could not only keep up wiht cars, but in some cases, pass them. but yes riding 3 abreast ona  narrow road IS asking for issues. but so is moto rider not paying attention. 2 faults here :).

Except these guys weren't ride alongside each other.
The guy that got hit was cycling on the white line, he couldn't be any further to the right.

Well, I honestly wasn't trying to offend anyone. I feel both the cyclist and motorcyclist were at fault. Clearly the motorcyclist was riding way too fast and that's what happens when you do. I feel like the cyclists shouldn't be riding on a road that's known to be dangerous. It's like "What did you expect?"

Not offended, Kijona  ;)

Just a difference of opinion.
I went for a nice trip this morning (first ride with a pillion on my GS, went quite well)
and we must've passed / crossed 3- to 4- hundred cyclists (not kidding!).

Looks like we're just coming from two very different places.
Tell you what: I'll go out next Sunday morning to record my next vlog, on this topic (looking ahead for unexpected traffic) just to show you guys how much we have to take bicycles into account on certain roads here.

Tell you what: I'll go out next Sunday morning to record my next vlog, on this topic (looking ahead for unexpected traffic) just to show you guys how much we have to take bicycles into account on certain roads here.

Well, we also live in completely different parts of the world. It seems like most peoples' attitude around here is "screw you, I'm more important" and well, yeah. There's also people who like to group up and cause problems for others around them simply because they enjoy being a nuisance.

A quick mid week video why not to overtake on double lines. This could have ended badly.

Also slippery white ones as well. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the shout-out, Slips

Nice 'perk' that comes with my job (teacher): every now and then you meet young people that you really connect with.
I try to inspire them, but sometimes it's the other way around.

I never add pupils to my Facebook-friendslist (accident waiting to happen  :nono:)
but some send a friends request after they've graduated, and I usually accept.

It's always nice to keep in touch, see how they're doing.
This guy for instance: we were always discussing music in class
and now he's making his own mixes and throwing them online:

Sorry guys its been over a week since I threw up a vlog, had computer issues and a bit of stuff going on. I did upload this video a couple weeks ago but didn't link it up here. Hit a milestone in my absence I hit 100 subscribers which im thrilled with and thanks largely to a lot of the members from this board who subbed me originally when I did tutorial videos so thanks. I have a couple more tutorial videos in the pipeline I'd like to do and even though I don't have a GS anymore you will still be able to use this on your bike. This video is a response I did to another vlogger from down under called Old Man Triple, he did a video on his crash history and while riding one day the thought came into my head and this is the result. Janx reckons I sound a bit like him but I think janx has been into the drop bear juice again haha. Here it is my crash history vlog.

Yeah just about every video has at least 5 thumbs down which makes me very warm and fuzzy inside and slightly arroused cause whoever it is takes the time out of their day to give me those thumbs down they happen in quick succession, and I know that they will encounter at least 1 ad that earns me money. They waste their life to give me money and that works better than Viagra hahahahahahahaha

Nah... That's not the point ... As you said... If they view even a bit they see the ad and you get paid... Whether they admit it or not!  :D

A sock?, meaning windsock on camera?, ( carry fabric bandaids in toolbox. great roadside Mcgyver fix) Get a goped for around town errands :D, even works for beer runs.  a backpack or a towped works great. and like our beloved GS, are able to be sold at profits. kids love the things
