Title: Random tire destroying incident.
Post by: ryott52 on April 17, 2013, 03:25:45 PM
So I pretty much destroyed my rear tire today in the most random way. The plastic tabs holding my battery box in place apparently cracked when I went over a bump, dropping the battery box on the rear tire. This got wedged between the tire and the swingarm, shaving almost all the tread off the left side of the tire (highway speed). So now I've ordered a new battery box to replace the old one (bike's a 96, I think the plastic just wore out) and I've ordered a brand new Michelin Pilot Road 3 tire to replace the dead Dunlop. What's the weirdest way you've destroyed a tire?

sorry no weird tire destroying story here. just a word of caution.  keep your front and rear tread styles the same. could cause some interesting cornering and handling issues mixing brands and tread patterns. ask me how i know.

I assume you're not talking about a GS500. I have only seen steel battery boxes and steel bolts holding it to the steel frame.
The GS500 is too "sophisticated" to have plastic tabs.

Not a GS, Honda CBR, with a plastic battery box. I'd love to hear the mixed tire story, it's a Dunlop Roadsmart II up front so they're both sport touring radial tires, I just like the Michelin because I had them on my GS and I was happy with tire life and handling.

mixed tire brands once and pretty much put one in the ditch. wet road yes, driving like a moron no. one tire gripped better than the other and the rest is history. some people do it but after that i do not.

from what i have read on the subject of mixing brands it works for some and not for others, did not mean for my reply to sound full of doom and gloom. just relaying my personal expeirince and do not want it to happen to anyone else. ok enough said. back to the original topic! :D

Gotcha, thanks for the input. We'll see how it goes, the front still has about 3k miles to go, I'll be careful scrubbing in  the new rear.

My tire story:

I used to work at a Vespa shop.  A guy just had a new tire on his GTS250 and was strapping it to his trailer (lived out of town).  He had wrapped a tie-down around the throttle - modern scooters have no neutral -  and decided to start the bike to have me listen to a sound he thought his scooter was making AFTER a service.

Tie-down wrapped around  throttle + no neutral = ruined tire.  The scooter was not up on it's center-stand so the tire just tore into the wooden floor of his trailer.  Burned floor and shredded tire....crazy.

Thought about using the good offroad tire for tractio0n on the goped, and a street tire for cornering for the front. but agreed. will wait til i can put two roadies on the scoot

Yeah, the girl falling into the tire kinda beats mine...

As for the guy with the Vespa on the trailer, how long did he let it run like that before he killed it? Seems to me he should've noticed pretty quickly.

He panicked a little then fumbled for the kill switch ... so not too long.  I was yelling "Hit the kill switch, hit the kill switch!!!" pretty quickly after he fired it up.
