Title: Replaced Brake and Clutch levers on an '09 F and now she won't start.
Post by: Minus on April 19, 2013, 10:49:05 PM
Does anyone have any ideas what I might have messed up? I'm completely stumped and embarassed on how I messed this one up.

There is a little switch at the clutch lever, #8 in photo. It's a safety switch just like the kickstand down safety switch. Remember having to hold the clutch in to make the bike start?

Clutch lever is in series with the start button.

Watch the video. You may have broken your clutch switch.

I don't think the little guy is broken, I did clean the gunk off of it before replacing it if that means anything.

Also small world, I watched your video a few days ago!

Switch could be in backwards.
Be in neutral and see if starts with clutch lever out.
You can pull the wires for the clutch switch and short them.
If you have the old style switch of a PC board and all the little parts - so easy to get parts in wrong. What we do here is get the newer switch for $10 or so and use it - putting space connectors on the wires or just soldering to the switch (carefully so you don't melt it.)

If you have the PC board switch, you can shirt the wires by poling a stick pin through the wires to make a short. very little current in them as all they so is turn on the relay.

Then you can bypass them in your headlight bucket where they connect to the wires in  the right handle bar control.

Normally I wouldn't correct a guy with Karma: +365/-0, but connecting two wires and completing a circuit is different than a short  :nono:

(My Yami starts without pulling in the clutch and I'm not dead, I say connect the wires and screw the switch all together)

I'll let that go. You live close and never come to the Bike Cave. I have little regards for anyone that doesn't pay a visit.
Oh, well, might as well make this a cat thread....

OK....you have got the attention of OMG WTF Kitty, I guess I could locate the 15T & 16T CS sprockets from my now departed GS500F and run them over to the Bike Cave this afternoon and add them to your parts inventory. It can't rain though....Lord knows I don't want to get my new Dual Sport wet

Horray! I was very glad to entertain you at the Bike Cave. Thank you for the parts. Someone will need them, if not one of my projects.

Adidas:  Mark my word...When I get over this crappy divorce, I will have free time and I WILL ride to the West Seattle Bike Cave.

It's high time to ride from Ohio to Seattle.  Yes, I'm that nutz.  It's not the destination, it's the journey.  But in this case, it's both!

Hello,

(sorry to jump into this thread, seems to be sort of on-topic to what my question is asking)...

I managed to break both my clutch & front brake levers & need to get them replaced & was hoping for some feedback on what to get. Should I stick with OEM or are there better aftermarket versions ?
I did a search & found
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=57748.msg654108#msg654108

So am I right in thinking clutch lever from GS500 04 - 09 are compatible with each other ?
Also, the list of brake levers are all the same compatibility ?

Also looked at MotionPro as suggested in one topic but only ships to U.S (im from AUS)

Can anyone suggest other websites that might sell (OEM) levers, my google results seem to be mostly ebay.

Regards,
