Title: Well, my bike got stolen...
Post by: ilarson007 on April 22, 2013, 06:55:55 PM
... And recovered, but with a ton of damage.  Some of this stuff I don't know is even repairable.  For instance, they took my ignition out and put in their own, but it doesn't even turn into the fork lock position, and it looks like they really hacked up the frame doing it.  So... Any suggestions

Will your insurance cover some of it? That's a lot of damage.

Holy shtako!!! Did they gut the ones who did that?

It's sad to see what people will do to someone else's property. Even more so when it's valuable. I hope it all works out on repairs.

Insurance won't cover it, no.
I'm assuming they picked it up in a truck or something and then broke my steering lock and removed my ignition when they got home.
The idiot dropped it at some point, as you can see by the brake handle.  He also did a VERY POOR job at painting all the Suzuki logos red.  I don't know if there is a way to remove that paint without destroying the paint underneath.  He stripped all the decals off, and well, I'm sure as you can see it needs repainted because of all the scratches added.  Every time I tell this story, it makes it worse!

 >:( What comes around goes around....They'll get theirs!!  I'm suprised that insurance won't cover it.  Thought you are required to have full coverage on motorcycles.  :dunno_black:

why wont insurance cover it?  The frame is damaged and ignition was busted out and replaced by those who stole it.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where OP is located? It's not in his profile. Might help the rest of us understand the whys and wherefores of his insurance company's reasoning.

Insurance would be under comprehensive I believe.

If they did a bad job painting the suzuki logos red, I assume spray paint? Try some wd-40 or maybe very gently with gasoline. Automotive paint is made to be resistant to petroleums because they're so frequently exposed to them. Spray paint, not so much.

brake cleaner or brake fluid will remove the paint.  But it will also remove it from anything its on for to long spray it on a rag and then wipe the areas you want to remove paint from.

ilarson007 you should say where you are located.  There are some helpful members here that know bikes and may be able to help.  Between that, and adidasguy having piles of extra parts, you may be able to fix it up.

Still, it sucks for sure.

I'd be happy to supply parts to get your bike fixed up. If it runs, then the rest is cosmetic.
If the fairing is trash, you can go naked. I have extra sets of OEM headlight mounts.
I think I have an extra white tail section and OEM seat. Levers - yes.

Why would they have trashed the gas cap? That is odd. Not much gas to steal and you can drain it by cutting the fuel line.

I am in Indiana.  I don't have comprehensive on the bike, I guess it's not required here?  The entire bike needs repainted, he added a f%$k ton of scratches all over the tank, fairings.  And like I said, I have no idea what he did to get the ignition out, but it looks like it's nor repairable (see pic below).  The ignition that is in there now doesn't even turn back to lock position.  I need a new ignition switch, gas cap, and seat lock that all match with new keying (dealership??).  I want the next guy to be able to go to the dealership if they lose their keys and get some new ones cut.

The person that was caught was not charged because, as the officer told me, in the county he was caught in they do not have enough evidence for the case to stick in court... He was on a STOLEN bike, but because he said "I didn't know it was stolen, someone else let me ride it" he gets off scott free?

Does anyone know of some free legal advice I can get in Indiana on auto theft? Specifically Dekalb County (I don't live in Dekalb, but the bike was found there).

This guy made changes to this bike like he was going to keep it to ride for himself.  Like I said, changed the ignition, peeled off the decals, destroyed the lock on the gas cap to get it open, removed the lock from the tail piece and shoved my power plug in there (that's why I need a new tail piece, that hole is bored out to get that in), cleaned up my wiring, put a piece of my fairing back together correctly (I had something out of place when I did it).  I just... it feels like the stupid thing is molested, not clean.  I don't really want it anymore, and I sure as hell don't want to spend my entire summer fixing it.

Addy I think they were riding it so they were adding gas not taking any out. They even starting painting the bike so most likely had a different plate on it and were using it.

Putting on my audit and compliance hat here...

There's Comprehensive, Collision, Liability, under-insured, and uninsured insurance

Simplistically speaking...
Liability covers the other guy and the other guy's property in the event of an accident.
Collision covers your car when you are in an accident.
Comprehensive covers your property "other than collision" such as fire, theft, Act of God, civil unrest, riot, natural disaster, etc.
Under-insured helps when the other guy hits you and he/she only has state minimum coverage like Safe Auto and your damage is more than that.
Uninsured is when someone hits you, and they have no insurance.

All can be purchased in Indiana.  Used to live there.  Only liability is required by law pursuant to IC 9-25-4-5.

EDIT:  I'm sorry about your situation, and I hope it gets resolved.  There are free legal advice websites and resources for your area.  I'd start there.

This made me think of the movie Idiocracy where the guy is in a line going into prison and tells the guards he should be going out, not in -- and the guard say something along the lines of "Then you should be in that line, dumb@$$" and pushes him over to the line of people getting out.

Seriously... they come across someone on a multi-thousand dollar stolen vehicle and they let him wander away because 'someone else let him ride it'?

BRB, gonna go find 'someone else' to let me drive a fire truck. This should be fun [/sarchasm]

How long did they have it or was it stolen?

On a side note, I just added a SPY 5000 2-way alarm on mine with remote start and ignition kill. Also has a microwave sensor and it all works really nice. Cost like $100 off ebay new. (HINT HINT to all members out there)

replace the ignition and tank filler lock, then mirror and ride it ?

park near gsx-r's or r6's from now on and yours won't be stolen again.

Yeah, it's nuts.  And because it was found in a different county, the cops in my city can't do anything about charges, and the other county isn't pursuing it because "there's not enough evidence."  The detective I just spoke with said that here, they'd still probably press some charge.

However, hopefully if no charges are pressed then I might be able to get the name to sue his ass off.

I am sure you might be able to do a civil suit, that suit might even show that he was responsible and criminal charges may follow. Of course you can't get blood from a stone but you can break it's knee caps with a hammer!!  ;)

It was stolen Wednesday night, and found on Sunday. Did more damage in 3 days then I did to the bike since September.

Sorry to hear about this. The cops just didn't feel like doing the work and booking the guy.  So you tell the "detective" that since they didn't want to do any detecting, suppose they won't do any when the thief winds up in the hospital with no kneecaps.

Criminal charges: must be beyond a reasonable doubt

Civil: preponderance of the evidence - 51% vs 49% wins.

You have a good shot in civil court (small claims) if you can link him to the bike.

Back on topic, here is the steering stem.
They broke off the parts that make up the steering lock. While not required for the bike to run or ride, you can't lock the steering anymore.
