Title: Carb tuning without performance jet kit
Post by: JoeGross on April 29, 2013, 11:54:12 PM
Hi every one, my name is Joe, I live in Portugal, so please excuse any typing errors, and I'm also new at the forum.
I'm just finishing a project on my 99 GS500e, mostly aesthetic work but couldn't help myself to strip it of of the stock air filter and swooped it with two K&N like conic filters and drilled a couple of wholes at the end of the exhaust, I'll upload some pics as soon as I have some worth sharing. What hapens now is, it sounds great, I mean really great, but with the engine cold, as soon as I throttle it just dies on me until 6krpm and then it fires to 10k no problem, when it's hot it still lags quite a bit in low rpm but not so much, and it rides 98mph with the wind at my back, I'm a heavy guy as well so cant expect much more. I know the solution would be performance jet's, but after a couple of hours on the internet, here in Portugal, even Europe it appears hard to find the factory jet kit, and also reached the budjet for the build, so my question is, is there any way to mechanically tune the carbs in order to increase the fuel flow so it doesn't choke with all the extra air in the chamber?
Thank's a lot for your time, and again sorry for the long story.

This probably isn't recommended, but you could drill out the factory jets to increase the fuel flow.

Thanks a lot, I was hoping for something a little less intrusive :)

This is my project, just finished, more changes are possible, but at the moment this is how it will stay.
Hope you like it.

Sounds like needle jet range to me, I had the exact some thing when I put on my lunchbox intake. Shim that needle!

Thank's Badot, sounds good, post when it's done to feedback.

Look up user "The Buddha" here on the forums. He sold me a kit that I'm sure cost less than $25US. It came with both primary and secondary jets and shims for the needle. Made my bone-stock GS500E run like a dream! He told me he's done hundreds of GS500E carb kits and knows exactly what jets to use for each setup. I'm sure he'll know the right setup for yours, and be able to provide it for a very modest price.

Thank's man. I think I maneged it. I missed the fuel intake screws before. I gave them a couple of twists and on a stand stil, it's running perfect. Haven't had the chance to try it on the road. Hopefully I don't have to spend any more money or else my whife will certanly slid my throaght haha. Thank's to you all
