hey all, i am having an issue starting my 93 gs500. the starter motor spools, but it doesnt turn the engine over. i dont know if i need a new starter or if its a problem with the starter clutch. any insights or troubleshooting i could do to find out which is causing the issue? any help appreciated.
Check out this thread. It sounds exactly like what you have:

I had a similar thing happen: the magneto bolt came loose (Starter gear is bolted to the magneto).
Tightened it once and came loose again after a week.
Next time I basically sterilized things: i.e. made sure zero grease or oil was on the shaft and mating surface in the magneto. It is just a press fit on that tapered shaft so zero contamination was crucial. Put back on and gave it an extra hit with an electric impact wrench. Been on there 7 months now.
I add that I put a couple drops of thread lock on the threads of the bolt AND that the bolt and threads in the crank were also cleaned of all oil contamination.
The flaw in engine design is when starting it, the starter gear rotates things counter clockwise: the same direction to loosen that bolt. I think if it had a key slot they'd never come loose.
i'll look into that - obviously i would rather replace the spring and pins instead of finding a used starter.
thanks folks, ill keep you posted.
