Title: INFO ON BRAKE LINES
Post by: codajastal on May 06, 2013, 02:29:48 AM
I want to change my front brake line as no matter how many times I bleed them I still cannot get them to work any good?
I have also taken them to a bike mechanic to check and he suggested I change the caliper as I had bled them perfectly, so I bought a good used caliper off a 06 bike with only 1015 confirmed miles on it and it is still the same?
I can only guess the old 1990 lines are swelling somewhere as I depress the lever so line replacement is next I guess.
ANYWAY the info I need is how do I buy the lines as I have NEVER EVER in 35+ years changed a brake line?
I find that ebay is probably the cheapest option but dont know what to look for? Some say just the line and no ends? Some say braided, some say gold blah blah,
some say only for certain years and some say only for F or E models?
I just want to know the cheapest and which one to buy.
Help me oh wise ones

 :icon_twisted: you called !!  ;)

Dunno about cheapest bro.... But I would aim for the most 'cost effective'? ... If that makes sense...

Lots of the lads I ride with use HEL lines ... They gotta be popular for a reason other than 'cool' .. Don't they?....

And the old tyres/suspension/BRAKES equation.... It's your ass on the line!

Not saying a cheapo set won't be any good.... So long as they a properly LEGIT cheapo set eh! :thumb:

.... Well maybe you should have eh!!  :flipoff:

But  :dunno_black: ... They look the part! ... I'd be chasin up our few pommy members and asking them how they are rated over there?.... Hmmm hang on... I got a mate on FB that is heavily into bikes in the UK ... I'll check there too...

Only thing I would question is the DOT and TUV .... Heard of DOT but Wtf is TUV? ... We have AS rating yeah? ... I'm thinking DOT rating is fine ... Dot4 or dot5 brake fluid for example!? .. But I dunno... I'll ask the mate!

Get a HEL line... locally made and good reports. I would've done that except they don't list one accurately for my 450... it says it's a two line kit but I only have one disc and caliper  :dunno_black:

I ended up getting mine from an eBay seller in Canada shipped for slightly cheaper than the HEL line based on numerous good reports from the GS Resources. Apex brake lines in the eBay one.

Suzuki recommends rubber brake lines are replaced every two years... yes your 1990 hose needs replacing!!!!

And definitely get a braided line, a million times better.

A tip on bleeding... use a big syringe or one of those cool fancy Mityvac's to start the bleeding by sucking the brake fluid through the caliper. Then, strap your brake lever to the 'bar overnight and come back in the morning to a magically firm brake lever  :thumb:

I just recently bought and installed those lines. No complaints and would order from them again.

Got a reply back from the UK mate .... He said they are pretty popular over there , although not as popular as HEL and Goodridge ... Hasn't used them personally but seen them on many bikes... General consensus is that they are just as good as HEL.... Just Pomgolian
