Title: Blade Owners?
Post by: pliskin on May 06, 2013, 08:03:26 PM
We have some gun collectors here but how about knives? I collect a few here and there. I've even made a few. My dad is somewhat of a knife expert and he got me into it when I was pretty young. Needless to say I've had my fair share of cuts.

My dad gave me this one-of-a-kind hand made Damacus blade blade for Christmas this year. It was made by a now retired bladesmith. The handle is made from African Blesbok stag. The blade is forged of 2 types of steel folded over into layers. It's my favorite piece.

Beautiful, man. I've always been a fan of Kershaw knives and have 2 of their Damascus blades, but that there is on an entirely different league.

I like Kershaw also. I carry one of their little assisted openers in my pocket every day. They are great knives for the money.

pliskin.  I have a knife that is special made, never used, and comes with a letter from the president of schrade (got the knife as a prize, blade had a discoloration, I shipped it back to have it polished, and instead they made a special blade out of stainless).  If your dad is plugged into the knife business, do you think he can guess a value?  I would love to know.

Collectors go for vintage "Made in USA" Schrade/Old Timer knives/Uncle Henry knives. Depending on the model they can range from $20-$600 or more. Rarity and condition comes into play. Never sharpen or polish the blade. Don't remove rust or patine on old knives, just keep it oiled to stop corrosion.

Before Schrade closed up shop they where made in China and will probably never have any real collectors value.

If you can post a pic of yours I'll show it to him and see if he knows about it. Did you get to keep the original blade? Also if the SS blade they gave you is a factory custom it could add value just for that fact.

If you ever see old run-of-the-mill type knives (non custom made) like Schrade, Case, Buck, etc. at a sale or something they're worth picking up for a couple bucks. Has to be made in USA....Buck made in china now also.

Not Chinese made for sure.  Made in NY.  Big arse hunting knife.  Letter is from like 20 years ago.  President says it's a collector's item in his letter.

I'll PM you the info and pics of knife and letter.

I'd love a Bob Kramer blade before I die.  But $500 per inch is a little over my head.

Sounds like male hooker prices.

Only problem with having one of those Kramer knives is that I would never use it. You just can't chop onions with a work of art. If you did use it, and used it right, you would never need to sharpen it.

Here is a classic. Ka-Bar Marine Corps Fighting Utility Knife (USMC). Simple, indestructible, deadly

It's like owning an irreplaceable classic car. You want to drive it, but one wrong move and it's ruined forever.

Not much of a knife collector, but I got 2 that I really enjoy. the top is a  balisong (bradley cutlery co.) that is super sharp, multiple fingers on my right had can attest to that     The bottom is my daily carry knife, a microtech ultratech double edged/serrated OTF. Wish I could carry a gun, but I live in cook county IL and there is no concealed carry of a handgun, even though I have a permit from another state

Kyled, those are both sweet. I really like that microtech. Is it a a retractable switchblade? What's the blade length? In PA I think we can legally carry a concealed knife as long as the blade is under 4 inches. It's kind of dumb considering you can carry a 10 in hunting knife as long as it's displayed out in the open. Same with guns. We can carry a sidearm or rifle out in the open without a permit, but need a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Go figure. Here is a couple of my pocket knives. Starting with the big 10inch folder on top: Cold Steel Pocket Bushman, CRKT M16 14LE, Spyderco Byrd Flight, my little assisted open Kershaw that I use for a money clip. 81/2x11 paper to show size.

But also keep in mind PA is one of the easiest states to get a concealed license in. As long as the background check goes well, it's a 15 minute process.

Diggin the CRKT, is the body metal or a polymer? Yeah, it's a retractable switchblade. Bought it here about 3 years ago http://www.bladeops.com/Microtech-Ultratech-OTF-Knife-Stonewash-D-E-P-p/mt122-11.htm (http://www.bladeops.com/Microtech-Ultratech-OTF-Knife-Stonewash-D-E-P-p/mt122-11.htm), the blade is about 3 inches, the link has the full specs. Pricey little bugger, but since it belongs in my pockets like my keys and wallet I never lose it  :thumb:  The balisong on the other hand... I must have closed it on my hand about a dozen times while mindlessly playing with it while watching t.v, now I don't even touch the damn thing LoL

Great thread, I enjoy knives a bit too much. I've kept myself from starting a big collection, I get a little crazy with em haha

I've been a sucker for ken onion's assisted opening Kershaw's for years now. I usually have it on me daily, but forgot it this morning. I lose and misplace my pocket knife too oftne, i think i'm on my 6th or 7th of the ken onions. 2 chives, 2 leeks, 1 blur, 1 tact blur(one of my favorites), 1 shallot, and if i remember right, currently have another black tact blur.

One of my favorite knives i own is definitely my papa's homemade knife. Deer antler handle with his initials still carved in the bottom.

I'll get some photos soon

Went camping with my g/f last night, and I think she had the exact same knife as the top one. Is it like a survival knife, with a compass and matches, fishing line, etc. inside it?

Yea, it's got the matches in the handle. Fish hooks, compass, needle and thread...all that. You can by them at Harbor Freight for like $10. It's impossible to get sharp (cheap stainless steel). It's a lot bigger than it looks in the picture, It's about a foot long. For $10 I got 2 of them. One for my car and one for the toolbox.

This is very interesting forum. Have Protech 3410 bought on ebay last October. Very cheap. Big blade which I like for cutting fruit and to have in belt. I was unhappy that it might not come to me in post. But it came OK, no hassle. It came from American and it came to my aunties house in Liverpool and then she phoned me and I went and picked it up from her. When I can will show you all picture of my Protech. Once in Westfield at Miranda I thought that security was going to search me and find my knife. But, golly, he left me alone and I didn't get hasseled and that was good. Sometimes at Miranda we get hasseled a lot.
I have finished my last assignment for college now so now I am going to go to bed. If I can I will log in on Saturday or on Sunday. I will go for a ride Saturday definitely.

Found this one in Pop's garage.  He bought it for me from one of those Swiss Army knife stores that used to be in all the malls around here, about 25 years ago.  Blurry cell phone, sorry- it says "Surgical Steel Japan - Parker Brothers, patent #."  Has some fishing line, hook, needle, matches, some other stuff in the handle.
