Hey Everyone-
I was just wondering which filter you are running, I have found two, SU-5589 and RU-2970. Which flows the best, and which is the pod that everyone refers to? I'm guessing that the pod option will require two filters. Please help me out here, I did a search, but couldn't find the answer.

I'm running pod filters, RU-0800 is the part number. I measured the carb air intake diameter and fit these and they seem to work well. I wouldn't use a stock exhaust with them (I tried and struggled with the jetting). Personally, I think the sound of air sucking into the carbs via the pod filters is pretty cool.

I run a RU-2970, It works really well, but sometimes it can be somewhat of a pain to get on the carbs. Also, it is one big filter that goes over both carbs.
The indicvidual pods are easier to get on. I cant believe how hard the pod was to get on Gino's bike, mine have individual pods and went on 1000 times easier. However you could make some sorta spring loaded press in mechanism that pushes them against the carbs using the front of the battery box for leverage wiht the 1 big pod.

Mine are individual pod filters in case anyone is interested (RU-0800) They can be ordered from karting suppliers for around $25-30 a pair and they are really easy to mount.

OK I think it is settled then, get the individual filters. They have the same power gains and are much easier to get on.
I've got the one big pod and can vouch for it being a huge pain in the ass to get on. I think the tear in the carb boot that caused me that huge headache was probably caused by me wrestling with the damn K&N filter

Single filter here and no problem with installing it, slides right on.
likewise, single filter here... no problems getting it on... had the carbs out for rejetting anyway... just mount it on carbs first, then mount carbs... its as easy as pie... :mrgreen:
If you have problems getting it on, a touch of WD-40 will work wonders. The power achieved by the two pods or the one pod will be about the same. The venturi can only suck so much and there's plenty o' air on either setup. Your gains will be determined by your ability to jet it correctly.
The singles are sold by the pod on most sites since some people have twins, and some have fours, and some have triples, and some have singles, and some have 6'ers. Silly CBX's. Anyways, if you don't need the K&N name, the cheap knockoffs are probably just as effective, if you ask me, and can be had for a LOT better price ($9) on this site:

These aren't available in the size the GS needs, and they aren't as good quality as K&N's or some of the better knock offs. The S&B filters sold by baker precision is better than the K&N and cheaper too, and its available in the GS sizes.

i posted this on the other filter thread too, but if I have the carbs out will hte big, single pod be much easier to install than if iI had the carbs in?
Just curious, the reason is obvioius. 1 big pod is 30 bucks, 2 little pods 52 bucks.

Well I just remembered it...
www.bakerprecision.com has S&B filters which other than being K&N copies they have a good rap amongst the GSXR users (I was told) and are much cheaper than K&N's to boot. I have these on my gs since 99. Sweet filters, I have the straight cylindrical kind. I believe these are better then K&N's and 1/2 the price.

what is the jetting and/or exhaust requirements if you switch to pod filters?
I bought the drop in K&N filter for my bike. SU-5589. I decided to keep the stock airbox and go without the pods since I had just rejetted without taking those into consideration.
Going with pods (1 or 2) would surely make the bike run even leaner than it already is in stock config so you need to get richer jets. I guess the board defacto is #40 pilots and mains depending on which filter and exhaust you have. I went with #127.5 for stock exhaust and drop in K&N air filter.
I probably shoulda gone a little bigger on the mains since I'm thinking of doing a full exhaust eventually.

Ok guys, I'm looking at getting a K&N drop in filter, and a slip on.
For the most part everyone agrees to #40 pilots, but what size mains? Does anyone know the specific part (mikuni) #'s so that I could order directly from my dealer?
127.5 mains for K&N in airbox and pipe.
150/40/1 washer/ 3 turns for Pods and pipe.

I just purchased a 2004 GS500F. From experience, can anyone tell me if I should do the break-in before or after changing the can (looking for a slip-on) and the filter (using pods)... or can I do the mods can, jets & filters right off ???

Dont go pods before break in. Can or not wont matter but break in with good jetting will reduce the wear it will incur cos it will run cooler. So I'd jet it right before break in and then do pods if you want. However you cant test the up high jetting etc too well so you'd have to jet it and break it in before revving up anyway. Now 04 jetting may well be different form an 01-02 and is definetely different from 89-00 so you need to figure what jets to use.
