Title: Valve Clearance Advice
Post by: Scoz on May 11, 2013, 06:31:32 PM
Hey Guys,

I checked valve shim clearances on my 09 GSF for the first time (6100km).  Here's what I got:

LE: 0.09 mm        RE: 0.08 mm
LI: 0.10 mm         RI: 0.09 mm

I checked and rechecked and kept getting the same clearances. 3 are beyond the recommended 0.08 mm clearance but know that it is ok to go to 0.10 mm on the exhaust valves.  Are you guys concerned about the intake clearances being higher then spec? My gut feeling tells me that 1/100th of a mm is ok and because it came like this from the factory, I'm not feeling too concerned.  Wouldn't mind some reassurance nonetheless.  What do you guys think?

Beyond the clearance verifications, I changed the oil and put new iridium plugs and a new air filter in and checked the torque on all bolts that are outlined in the manual.  She should be good to go.  :woohoo:

I would be happy with those specs.  A smidge loose isn't going to hurt anything, they should snug up over time and be right in spec next time you check.

I'd be happy to get a GS new with those clearances, they could go 100k miles that way but don't count on it.  I set exhaust valves at .003-.005" (.08-.13mm) now and leave intakes at the .001-.003" (,03-.08mm) factory setting and would not change them if they didn't go beyond my .013mm exhaust valve max.

My 97 GS went 80k miles without changing an intake shim and my 02 GS has 98k miles and counting on the factory intake shims.  I changed one once and changed it back the next time.

An exhaust valve on my 97 GS running at a minimum clearance required repeated shim changes until it was at a min 215 shim before 80k miles.  When a min gap exhaust valve started the same pattern at about 30k miles on my 02 GS I bumped it up to the new .003-.005" setting and it then went another 45k miles without a change.

Tip of the hat guys.  Appreciate your input.  I hope mine remains as stable as yours did Jack.  Thats pretty wicked.
