Title: New way to combat spammers. Opinions?
Post by: john on May 14, 2013, 12:59:57 PM
So I added a few specific questions about the GS for the challenge questions.  I got the idea from a guy that admins an automobile board.  I have noticed that since then the number of spammers getting through has dropped to almost nothing.  So to harden things up more I added a few more.

So far these are my questions:
who makes the GS500?
How many wheels does the GS have
what lubricates the GS engine
Does the GS have a tachometer
What lever is on the left handlebar
How many spark plugs does the GS have
Which foot operates the shifter on the GS
on the GS your right hand turns the what?
On the GS your right foot operates the ___?

I added 5 more today.  Originally there were only 4.  Assuming people that sign up here have an idea what motorcycles are, they should be able to google the answers at least.

Do any of these seem too complicated?  Please do NOT post answers.  I will ban you for a few days if you do.

Otherwise, those are pretty good

"On the GS your right hand turns the what" could be a bit confusing to a newbie

Might change it to "Which side of the handlebars is the (answer) on"

Same for the right foot question

We changed the gs500.net sign-up to have a new thing that requires you to match pictures & words. Since then, no spammers have been able to sign up.
I don't know if you can use the same thing, Lance would know that.
Go to gs500.net and make yourself a new account to see how it works.
It is totally random and you have to drag items around. Something a robot program can not do.
With questions and answers, once they know the questions and answers a robot program can fill in the blanks.

Since were posting answers and are going to be banned, ill throw one on too. Use either captcha, or what adidas said. for a trick question, ask about the capacity of the gs' radiator

The captcha things are being defeated. I had that on gs500.net. Got a few bogus registrations each day and the robots know to reply to the email. They just keep trying and given enough monkeys and typewriters, they will write all the works of William Shakespear and get through the captcha.

Hmmm hadnt thought of that. since its been a decade since ive registered here ( literally lol next month) i dont recall other than email confirmation of other steps. but ive noticed not much spammage here compared to gpn gpn gets a DDOS or other shutdown attack nearly daily. and more spam than one could eat.

No photo matchup unless there is a 3rd party plugin.  But just having a few random GS questions really seems to have foiled most bots.  Now two out of three questions are motorcycle related.  Sure maybe eventually they will catch on, but the suggestion to ask specific questions to the hobby of the forum, has really helped.  Not one spammer in like 4 weeks has gotten through.  Before I made the changes like half the sign-ups were spammers.

I have read that math questions are the easiest to beat.  But that's just what I read.

"If you have 200 apples how many oranges do you have?"

Pretty simple, would imagine hard to beat.

We have a site when you sign up you need to click a link that plays a wave file of a lady saying something. Then you have to type what she said into the question challenge box as the answer.

Actually I thing it was to sign into our Symantec account to get a forgotten password.

To offer constructive comments toward the topic...  :icon_rolleyes:

'on the GS your right hand turns the what?'  I agree with Kijona, this might be confusing to a newbie.

I remember when I signed up last year, there was one question that had me frustrated to hell.  I can't remember what it was exactly, but I was typing the correct answer but in the wrong way somehow...  :dunno_black:  I also remember reading someone else having the same issue later on in a random thread regarding the same question I had trouble with.
