Title: Don't know if this has already been posted
Post by: Gs500e98 on May 15, 2013, 05:46:57 AM
I purchased my first bike a gs500e 1998 naked. Problem is the engine is taken apart the rod came disconnected so the rod needs replaced and both pistons and the cylinder jugs need to be homed in. I have the manual for taking it apart but can't seem to get the lower end open to check for more damage. My question is what engines are compatible with this model? Thinking it will be easier to find an engine.. And also where's a good place to buy said engine. eBay has engines for 700 plush like 250 shipping which is crazy.. Please help! Thanks for reading my post

Any engine from any GS will fit any other, there are just some slight differences. The "F" series included an air cooler which the earlier "E" models did not have and they changed from a mechanical tach to electronic(?) at some stage too. Mounting the air cooler requires some effort, and the tach issue can be fixed by getting a new tacho and putting it in.

One of the more knowledgeable gents or ladies will be along to help you a little more, but those are the 2 issues that I can recall at midnight...

As for actually buying a new engine, let us know where you're located and we can maybe help some more. Maybe a member has one they could let go, or knows of one going cheap in your area. Hell, if you're willing to buy a case of beers, aren't afraid to get dirty and can find him, you might be able to get some help from our local parts "Man of the Night". :P

Oil cooler is easy to mount. My bike build Phenix is a 1993 frame with a 2006 engine.

as for case not opening, 2 things prevent that:
1. In the oil filter cavity there are 2 bolts
2. There are clutch/shifting parts under the clutch basket. One part crosses over from top to bottom case parts and must be removed for the case to open.

(I just went through all this with a junk lower end that had a bearing go bad and I wanted to see what happened. Ended up cutting off the clutch basket nut. Pix in the Junior build thread)

Dont get frustrated stay on it. Stay on here and communicate and research. You will get her up and running.

Craigslist available for you to search for engines?

I also use Searchtempest.com which allows you to search more cities on craigslist at once.. saves a bunch of time!
