Who has Baton: IceIVblue
States Visited: OH, IN, IL, KY, WV, VA, PA, NJ
First leg of the relay has been completed 6/29/13. It is now official. Contact the person who has the baton or me (jestercinti) if you want to get involved!
Ok, the time has come to begin the relay officially. Here are some links to get us started.

Credit first goes to the Australians. I 'borrowed' their idea. You can read about it here: Australia relay here --> http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=53572.0

------------
Popular vote is to hit as many of the 48 USA States as possible, so that's what we will go with. Here are the rules:
1. Baton must be carried on a GS500E/F. Others may ride, but this is a GS500 Relay, and as such...it will be a GS500 which will carry the 'baton'.
2. The event will begin in my hometown of Cincinnati Ohio. I can assist in where the baton will meander around the USA, but this is a team effort. All who are willing and able to participate should do so. Post yourself on the map. It's the system of record. The person who has the baton, and the next person receiving the baton are grown adults and can communicate how to complete the hand-off.
3. We have a baton, a banner, and a log to promote the event. Take pictures when you can, and have fun. It's not the destination, it's the journey.
4. If possible, take a picture with your bike (and you if possible) with the banner next to the 'Welcome to <state>' sign. This way, we can document the journey across the USA.
5. The OP will be updated by me or another Admin to state where the baton is now. Therefore, we will know where it is (approximately).
6. There is a risk that this will stall/become lost/never hear from people again. Life happens, and mine is no exception. Therefore, this will be a best-case effort.
7. Make sure that your bike is able to do the ride that is scheduled between you and the next rider. Bring a cell phone, and make sure that others know where you are going. This is for your safety. Make sure that the baton is securely fastened to the bike and is fastened safely.
8. Be safe, have fun, and let's begin this thing already!
I can ride either the weekend of June 1, June 15, or June 29, 2013.
Here's a picture of the 'Baton' (it can expand and shrink):
Here's what the banner looks like (Thanks goes to Dry_Humor):
The initial plan is to either:
1. Head west to IN, and IL, then swing back towards Steezin' and Wheezin for the hand-off. There are some riders in IL that would like to join (I'm talking to you BockinBBoy and Bombsquad...)
2. If the riders in #1 are not available, skip IN and IL and just head to Steezin via either OH or WV. I think there are some riders I can pick up along the way as well.
That's it for now...I'll update the OP with more information as I get it. PM me with anything.

I'm checking with the fiance this evening to match some weekends with yours... seems the 15th and 29th weekends are best bet just glancing at our calendar, but gotta confirm with her :icon_rolleyes:
There is going to be multiple times in the next 14 weekends that I'll be traveling from Illinois to Kentucky on my bike with plenty of time for the ride, so I'm sure we can mesh up at least one of those.
To reiterate number 7 on Jester's list, everyone please ensure your bike is tip top. We want to keep this safe and fun... and stuck on the side of the road... or worse... is neither of those. Along those same lines, don't use your bike being out of commission as an excuse, LOL. This is a GS500 forum, it can help get you and your bike ready so you aren't sitting on the sidelines for this!
I'm more or less using this post to subscribe to the new thread, but PMs hit my inbox faster for some reason, so use that if anything is time sensitive... Or if you are one of the luck few to already have my number, use that if you need to ;)

I'm selling some stuff so I can buy tires. The bike should have new tires in a couple weeks!
Yes Ross, tires for you... your current set is way tooo OLD!
- Bboy
Tentative date for kick off is 6/29/13.

The bike hasn't moved since I realized how old they were. Started it a couple times to get its blood pumping, but that's about it.
How much does that baton shrink (never thought I'd ever ask that question)? Just curious how tall the banner is and how compact we can make that. I'm in Brooklyn if anyone is interested in venturing that far into NYC. The weekend of the 15th might work for me. I'm taking off on the 29th for a week with some camping gear. I could pass the baton maybe on my way somewhere North or North East... Maine or anywhere on the way maybe.
Heyo! Missed this thread. I'll should be good and ready by the end of june. My birthday is tuesday the 28th, and my present to myself is all night and day saturday uninterrupted in the shop, then sunday until the gf gets off work.
I should have the bike button up and broken in(still only 130 miles on it) by then. Worst case I'll use my old gs i sold to my friend.
Pumped to be stoked this is happening. I think we will be able to make some solid progress, but we need to get some of the west coasters involved in the planning to get the wheel moving out that way
Without sounding too dirty...
The Baton is about 12 inches "shrunk" and about 24 inches "extended". With the banner in the baton, it's at about 18 or so inches.
Regardless, you will need some way to secure it to your bike. A meshed bungee net, or other type of strap would do. Just make sure that it's safe and secure. I plan to secure to the passenger pillion. Some of the baton will stick out the back of my bike I'm sure.
Excited about this! I can help when it makes it up to the Northwest, will be watching.
Awesome Idea!
I'll take it anywhere it needs to go in North Carolina or Southern Virginia. Fellow travelers are welcome to crash ( :nono:meaning sleep) at my place in Chapel Hill. I've got the whole summer off from grad school, so my schedule is flexible.
This is pretty cool haha always wanted to do something like this. I'm in middle northern Tennessee (Sumner county to be exact). If it comes this way I'm in. Added my circle to the map lol no where near as big as everyone else, but every bit counts right?
I'm into this crazy, fun idea here in central PA.
It sounds like fun.
Now I HAVE to get my carbs cleaned out and wash my bike!
:)
Thanks for the motivation.
Best wishes,
Trwhouse
We will be waiting patiently here in Florida waiting for my Clark's Fish Camp money :D :D :D....
OP Modified to update the official kick-off weekend for 6/29/13.
This is actually happening. WooHoo! :woohoo:
WOOT! Looking forward to doing a stint out here in SoCal, I am sure it will be awhile before it gets here but we have some big holes in the map out here on the left coast. Come on guys lets fill those holes!
So stoked on this!!
Slack and another local gs'er may be riding along with me on the first leg as well!
Need my GS done asap :2guns:
i added myself to the map. Add me to the people interested in joining you guys. Would like to know have a better time as to when you will be visiting so i can ask for the time off!
would love to take part in this, there is actually a travelocity gnome at my house for my uncles r6 group doing this. western ny here
Hey guys, this is a pretty awesome event and if I can I'll join in. Any idea when this will be passin through NJ?
All GS500 riders are welcome to join in! Check the first post and add yourself to our Google Map. Timing of when the baton travels through will be tough to guess at. Best bet is to keep an eye on this thread and also go ahead and start communications with the neighboring members. This will help get the wheel moving on the logistics of each meeting point.
I'll have the baton June 30th. I'm nearly smack in the middle of the bEast coast, and our connection to the west coast is south.. I'm thinking it will be best to send it north up to Maine. Then it will retrace its steps a bit and will be brought down from Maine to Florida, then west. This means it will more than likely get have to be carried twice by a couple members(unless we can do some serious coordination.)
What do y'all think? I'm open to any route..
I'll definitely ride with you for the hand-off Steezin.
I also think that before it heads west the banner needs to go down The Snake, and Tail of the Dragon. Either before going to Main, or on it's way to Florida. They are 2 of the best roads in the entire country, we can't leave them out.
I'm in Central/Southwest VA (Lynchburg), but I'm having some difficulties using the map feature from this computer (work). I see that my area is well covered already, but if possible, I'd happily ride along when it's coming through VA/NC area on its way to Florida.
I kinda have a route that will overlap around that time. I'm riding from Brooklyn,NY to New Hampshire on the 29th... to the Gray Ghost Inn. Then heading to camp in the white mountains in New Hampshire on July1st...and maybe 2nd. Then heading to Maine for 3 days... then going back down towards Connecticut... then home. About a weeks-worth of circling the area. I may be going in the wrong direction for the relay, though.
I mean Vermont... the Grey Ghost Inn is in Vermont... and is very biker friendly...

Last weekend before the big ride. Laying things out. Added some poly rope so that the baton can be tied to your bike and points of interest (signs, whatever).
I'm not comfortable with riding hundres of miles in a day yet, but very willing to participate around Pittsburgh, Pa and points east, west, and south of that area. I'll post on the map if I can figure it out. :)
Thanks to BockinBBoy, we have a route for Saturday morning from Danville, IL to Charleston WV (8 hr 469 miles)
We start at 8:30-ish Central Time. Steezin, it WILL take more than 8 hours to get there.
Let me know if you head it up North. Here's some dates and the areas I will be in June 29th - July 7th...
Sat AM: starting from Brooklyn, NY heading towards VT
Sat-Sun: West Dover, VT area and circling that point
Mon-early Tue(weather permitting): White Mountains, NH
late Tue-Thur: Casco, ME and circling that point in Maine
Friday: Heading toward CT
Sat: Hebron, CT
Sun: Back towards Brooklyn, NY
Let me know if that works for anyone. I wasn't sure if anyone's going north before going south, or if you're just heading down to Florida first.
-Erika
It's going to head North before South, but I don't think the leg after getting it to Virginia has been planned yet.
Ok, this is happening rain or shine. Packed, ready to head out tomorrow. Slack, PM me with an address in Charleston WV. Thinking 6:30p Saturday.
Woohoo! Getting psyched! Getting everything packed and in order. Checking and rechecking the checklist.

Bummed I'm not going to be there tomorrow, but stoked Slack was there to save the day. Got my bike running tonight, but still needs a bit more tuning. I'll be ready to ride with it next leg!
Bummed you won't be on the leg steezin. We could have gotten some wicked goPro film of the rout
Bike is prepped and packed I'm about to hit the sack. I've planned out a great rout, nothing but back roads except for about 50 unavoidable interstate miles, right around 400 miles total. But, it will be a late night since I'm meeting you guys at the end of your ride, but only 1/2 way though mine. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. If it's too late I'll just jet back on the interstate.
I'm riding in the rain.
Just riding in the rain.
What a glorious feeling,
I'm happy again.
good to see it starting to make the rounds!
depending on how long it takes to travel, I'm out for a good while due to a broked collarbone. hope that doesn't turn out to be a hitch heh.
First leg complete. Epic day!
Started in Indy at 7am Drove to Danville IL to meet BockinBBoy.
Then took some great back roads to Louisville and headed to WV.
Met Slack on the border of WV/KY for the handoff.

I had a great ride, 580 miles total.
Stopped at the capitol building of West Virginia, yes the roof is plated in real gold. Odd for one of the poorest states in the country.

If you're heading north up 95 through MD, be sure to let me know. I've got time and a running GS, I'd love to participate.
It'd be awesome if we could have a google map of the route that the baton has taken. You could check off the states with it as well. Really nice work so far guys. I'll bet there are some sore bodies after those long rides.
Great minds think alike Bomb!! I'm working on getting the route on a google maps. I'm thinking of showing it on the participant/planning map as well as making one showing just the batons travel path. Jester and Slack, when you get a chance shoot me a rough outline of y'alls route and meeting locations. I'll update them on the maps
Big thanks again to Jester for getting this thing planned, organized, and in action! And to Slack being there for the first hand off!
Had a blast riding through Loogootee, IN area on 150. Highly recommended for anyone in the area, and its worth a couple hours riding to get to if you can get the time. Really great area, shaded for much of the ride too. Lots of other good roads in that area which take you further into the National Forest, but 150 was headed the direction we were headed, and was a great ride.
Rode about 250 miles with Jester and the baton, then another 250 miles down to Hopkinsville. Looping back today with another 400 miles.
Already planning my next trip...
Everyone continue to ride safe on the relay!
I'll shoot you the route we took, Steezin.

The route Friday and Saturday. Cincinnati OH, Indianapolis, Danville, Louisville, Lexington, ending in Kenova, WV:
It was late already so I just rode 64E to 77S to 81N right back to Roanoke.
What's your route steezin? You going to be going by Northern VA? I may not be able to carry the baton but if you'd like a riding buddy for a bit give me a shout if you're up here.
Well this is my first post. This is a really cool idea!! I joined this forum because we (my wife and I) just bought a 2006 GS 500F for her to ride. I ride a FJR and she was riding a VLX 600 but decided she wanted something sportier and have her feet under her rather than in front. Anyway we would be more than happy to partake in this adventure! Even if when the time comes she isn't comfortable with a long distance ride I would be more than happy to take up the baton for her and help move this endeavor along! I understand I would need to ride the GS which is fine with me...it is a great bike! Anyway I added us to the Google Map. We are in Upstate SC where I-85 and I-26 intersect so depending on the route south we should be available to help. Great site, I've learned a bunch already!
Sorry busy with holidays.. Slack still has the baton and I believe he is going to take it over to the Tail of the Dragon (http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h125/kgf3076/dragon-map.jpg) then we will be bringing it up north. I'll shoot him a message and will update back asap.
I have created the map showing the baton's traveled path. Made it its own map, and it should be editable by all just like the coordination map;
https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=216083428469334706913.0004e0c5747e482b5ae25&msa=0&ll=37.822802,-81.23291&spn=12.987285,28.54248
Spent the last 5 days away from computers, out with the family on the water.
Now that I'm back, it's time to plan the next leg. I'd like to take the baton down to The Snake and hand it off.
I'm thinking of taking 221 south from Roanoke to Floyd
Then 8 south to 40 and 40 over to a little cut through, Iron Bridge road, which will take me right to Fairy Stone State Park. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fai.shtml#generalinfo (http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fai.shtml#generalinfo)
Then I'll take 57 E back over to 8 and take 8 down to 58.
I'll take 58 over the Dan river and then hop onto the Blue Ridge parkway headed south and dip into North Carolina.
I'm going to get of on NC-18 and take a little road called Delheart back over to 58.
I'll follow 58 east all the way to Damascus going through the Grayson Highlands (where there are wild ponies).
At that point I'll take 91 south to Mountain City Tennessee.
The Snake starts just outside of Mountain City and runs towards Bristol on highway 421, roughly 25 miles of non stop switchbacks.
After all that traveling I'll ride The Snake a few times before heading up north on 133, where the baton will pass through the shortest (distance, not height) tunnel in the World. http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/2008/02/worlds-shortest-tunnel.html (http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/2008/02/worlds-shortest-tunnel.html)
133 runs right back to Damascus, where I'll take 91 north a short stint to I81 and ride back to Roanoke on I81 north.
Hopefully some of you can meet me for at least part of the trip. Steezin you could just come straight over on 8 and meet me in Floyd. It's looking like around 9 hours of saddle time for me, so with stops I'm expecting to be out for 12 hours. I'll probably start on a Saturday morning around 7:30.
So, who's coming? This weekend? next? Who am I going to hand this off to? Remember, it has to be after riding the snake (or you at least have to join me for that part of the ride).
Also, I did putt around Roanoke with the Baton.
I took it up to the Mill Mountain Star overlooking Roanoke, the largest Man Made free-standing illuminated star in the world.
I had to park the bike behind the star
(http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee70/Little-X/GS500F/Relay%20Across%20America/0022_zps176aed74.jpg)
Then, since I was only 2 miles away, I took the baton up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway for the first time.
come to washington STATE!
I was on 221 and the blue ridge parkway yesterday. Swung by the D-Day memorial in Bedford too. I can join ya next weekend if that's when you decide to go. I have my kiddos this weekend though.

ok, the 20th. I can pass it to you to start back North on another leg.
Steezin how's the 20th for you? Wouldn't want you to miss out.
Anyone else want to join for a bit? These will be some epically twisty roads.
I like it guys, keep it coming!
Whatever will help the relay works for me. Sounds like you've got a VERY NICE ride planned.
Also, my father and I are planning to ride from Lynchburg, VA to Durham, NC on 8/2 to see my brother (returning on 8/3). Not sure if that will work out with the relay schedule, but just in case the baton is already heading back south during that time I'll gladly take it with me for a hand-off.

20th might work out for me if a trip I was going to participate in is still on.
my trip was going to start in Strasburg and go out into WV then loop back into Harrisonburg if you guys were going to be around that area.
not sure I'd take the baton (a month to organize a trip somewhere to drop it might be hard for me), but I do want to ride with you guys.
Sorry been out of town on business.. Killer photos Slack!!
The 20th is a no go for me unfortunately, I'll be in Atlanta that weekend. No worries on missing it this round. I'll definitely be good and ready to grab it and head south with it though!!

I'll be in Indy for the Red Bull MotoGP in the middle of August and on Friday night, that monument will be the meeting place for thousands of motorcyclists! It's a blast! They barricade off two blocks in all four directions from the monument and it's motorcycle parking only! I can't wait!
Great pics and progress so far! I'm bummed I couldn't join for at least a little off the start but we headed out for vacation the day before the relay started! Great job Jester for getting this organized and started. Now just keep it stoked and let's see that baton make it all the way! :thumb: :woohoo:

So, your planning on meeting me on 58 south west of Fairy Stone State park?
I was thinking I'd just meet up with you in Roanoke in the morning and ride out with ya if that works. It'll be the first long ride for me on this GS. Since it's been back on the road, I've put a few hundred solid miles on her. My only concern is wrist fatigue. The bike has vortex clip-ons, so I'm leaning forward quite a bit, and while in the marine corps, I broke my hand in 1999 and it didn't heal back properly (long story), so it's possible my right wrist MAY bug me after a while. I've done 100 miles straight without any problems, so hopefully a longer trip won't be much different. I guess I'll find out this coming weekend.
Don't let this discourage you. Worst case scenario - I'll just turn back before you do. No worries.
Ok, sounds good. In that case, there won't be a trip to Danville, like the previous maps.

You can't turn around early, the ride will build up with the best part being 3/4 of the way though before jetting back real quick on the interstate. We'll take plenty of breaks and do some stretching to make sure you make it the distance :thumb:
Works for me. I PM'd you my contact info.
Was there a ride on the 20th?
Yes there was. Slack and I covered many miles. He will probably be posting pics soon. I left my house at 6:00am and got home after 11:00 pm. Long day, but it was fun, and I learned quite a bit about riding from Slack. Here are a few shots from my phone.

Few more
EDIT: Not sure why some are showing as rotated 90 degrees. They do not appear that way on my cell.

I have the banner now and my understanding is that it needs to go north now before coming back down south. So who's interested in meeting up for the next hand-off? I'm in Lynchburg, Va.
Where's that stone bridge at?
And Drastik, if anyone else doesn't take it, I'm planning on going into Bath county for some family camping the 9th through 11th and pass through Harrisonburg on my way down. I'm normally in Manassas, but I'd be in Blacksburg for school starting August 23rd or so, so I'd have to hand it off fast if I did get it.
Be sure to list the states visited so I can keep the OP updated.
As for states, we did not get into NC as we originally planned, but we did get TN (and we're in VA now).
The rock bridge is actually the shortest tunnel in the world. It's in Johnson County, TN (8 miles from the snake). The tunnel is called Backbone Rock. Slack posted a link to it previously in this thread, I believe. I'm going to try and contact him to see if he is ok. I know for a fact he was planning on posting the pics he took (more than I took) because we were talking about it on the ride back to Roanoke from TN. Hope everything's ok with him.
I'd like to apologize for not being around here much lately myself. There have been some unexpected issues going on to include a friend's unexpected surgery and my own pulled hamstring. The pulled hammy is keeping me off the GS for a while, so I leave it up to you all to decide the best action to take. I don't want to hold up the relay any longer than I already have.
I can ship the banner to someone in a state that it has already been (so it won't really be cheating by skipping states) or a GS rider can get it from me. I'm certainly open to suggestions, and again - I apologize for this unplanned bump in the road.
Let me know your thoughts please.
No worries. Life happens, and mine is no exception. I need to sell my GS soon.
I'm sure someone in VA or on the east coast can help. If not, I may be a le to assist.
Whoaa.. Missed quite a bit on this! I'll have to get the google map of the baton's latest travel updated later. Definitely hope Slack's OK, let me know if you hear back from him Drastik. Hate to hear that Jester, hoping for the best for ya
Whatchu talkin bout shippin the 'ton?? Haha just messing.. I'm nearing 100% tuned on the project. I feel confident enough to ride up to Lynchburg and get the baton from ya Drastik. I sent you a pm.
Judging from the map I could get it from Drastik and take it to Huff1371. Maybe in one trek, maybe no. Then most likely from Huff to Oz353, and on up the East coast. I've sent pm's to you both to get the gears moving.
Good news - Slack is ok. He's just been a bit busy and away from technology for a bit.
Steezin - I replied to your PM. I'm very happy to hear that the relay can continue quickly!
Awesome to hear!
Got a meet setup to grab the baton from Drastik this Sunday. Lets keep this thing on the move!
Sweet! lets get it moving! I am usually free all weekend my work week ends on thursday :icon_mrgreen: so i can have a friday saturday and sunday for a grab and go to the next rider. let me know whats up!
Lets have the baton to FL before Winter. Then, it can slowly move west and head north again in the spring.
Just a thought. Glad things are working out! VA GS'ers are the best!
Hey guys, sorry it's been so long. Like Drastik said, I had to take a break from the web and catch up on real life for a bit.
So, on the 20th we went for quite the ride. We (Drastik and I) meet in Roanoke and immediately hit some curvy mountain roads. Which brings us to our first picture. This is now called Drastik's Corner. A grarly switchback to the left going up an insanely steep moutain side (Mt. Chestnut) directly after a decreasing radius hairpin to the right with a sudden change in elevation angle at the second apex. A little stripe of gravel on the outside was all it took and the Baton had it's first victim. We were going slow enough that nothing was damaged but a mirror.

After dusting everything off we continued on up into Floyd, Va stopping for a photo op at the court house.
From Floyd we wound our way over to Fairy Stone State Park. We didn't set up the banner at the park because we were being swarmed by Japanese Hornets.

(not my picture, just showing you what was EVERYWHERE, incase you don't know what I'm talking about)
Then we headed west towards the snake. We had planned on dipping into NC, but changed routs to hit a gas station and just kept our new course. Along the way we stopped at a great overlook called lover's leap. And we stopped for a photo at Grayson Highlands State park along the way too.

Then it was down into Tennessee. Here is a photo of Drastik crossing the state line.
The snake isn't far from the boarder. We rode it once then stopped at my Uncles (he lives on the snake) to enjoy some recliners, air conditioning, and a bathroom for a bit, before doing the handoff in his driveway.
Then it was another trip down the snake, bust a u-turn and ride down the 1st half (my favorite half) a third time before heading to the tunnel.

After that we shot back home up the interstate. It was a great day, I had a lot of fun riding with drastik and hopes his leg heals soon so we can ride again.
WOW! What an adventure.
Glad to see this moving along.
Awesome update Slack! Hating I missed that ride.
Sunday the 4th I coordinated with Drastik to ride up to Lynchburg and get the baton. Slack, my dad(vtx1300), and I met at my house and we headed north. Had a great ride up and back home. Found a few little glitches with my gs, but she made it with flying colors. The aggressive body position with clip ons and gimbel rearsets was nearly torture on the longer ride. It felt right at home when we hit some turns though!
We rode, we had chocolate donuts, we shot shaZam! with Drastik and his friend Brandon(i think) for a while, we ate Ledo's pizza, then headed back home. Split off from Slack in Roanoke, cruised back to my house, and Dad rode on home. Was the longest ride my dad's or I had ridden on a moto.
I didn't realize we were getting photos of the hand off, so I dropped the ball on getting that photo'd..
I'll update the baton's travel path soon, and also have some gopro footage to edit. Until then here's a few photos;

Great ride, good people, and great weather. Had a blast
I'll be out of town this weekend, and may be busy helping friends move next weekend. I've sent Huff a PM, but haven't heard back. I'm already in communication with Oz and he's willing to meet where ever needed to get this thing heading north! I will post with further plans as they unfold. Keep posted for a little gopro edit dropping sometime.
Looks like some fun adventures and good pictures :D :woohoo:
Its a bit long, but i whittled 3 hours of mostly straighter roads and city driving. Next edit should have a few more turns to watch.
EDIT: Not available in some countries.. Let me know if you have trouble and i'll pull the music off and upload one everyone can watch
Nice cut steez!
Little paranoid with all the cops around the 6min mark? :icon_lol:
Jealous of those levers!
- Bboy
I can't see the video from here (work), but I'll definitely check it out tonight.
It was great seeing you guys. Feel free to stop by anytime!
Nice video!
It'll be sweet when we finally get on some twisties with that camera.
We were passing Roanoke City Police Station/ Jail/ and Court House at 6min. Honestly those were a lot of empty cars, they were out in force on 460 though, saw several people pulled, and it looked like one or two bikers being arrested (it's a straight road, way to easy to whip it up to triple digits).
Awesome. Just a thought...when October hits, it will be cold. Need to start thinking of heading south.
Have had a few busy weekends lately. I have the baton still and will be ready to ride with it the last weekend in August(8/30-9/1). Huff's bike is currently down. So that means Oz would be the next one in line to head north. I have contacted next riders from the north and south to start coordination.
Jester makes a very valid point. It would be a shame to have it stuck in Maine for the whole winter. So I wanted to ask anyone still watching this thread if y'all felt we should go ahead and send it south?
I would hate to have it stuck up north, too. But the best chance of the guys up there to get involved within the next 2 years is to get up there now.
i am down to meet that weekend steez... my only question is who will i be handing off to?
i'm stopping by for the first time in quite awhile, coming off a road biking spill. I've started the bike a few times, and should be riding in a week or two. I'm in vermont, but I don't know how much of a lone voice in the wilderness i am here.
just sayin hi. HIII!
Not many people weighing in one the matter.. So the baton heads north!!
We knew it would take a while when we started. I think its better to get it to members close rather than hope/wish it comes back so they can ride a leg with the baton
Pm'd you oz. I'm not sure who you would prefer to pass it off to. Check out the map in the original post and start pm'ing people! haha
Just a heads up- Im still Game. In NH and my bubblez stand.
!!! :thumb:
I'm in Pa so might be able to catch the baton on its way back south.
Sounds good guys, just be sure to keep an eye on the thread. Maybe go ahead and start chatting with your neighboring members to coordinate routes/meeting places.
Oz and I have our next hand off date set. August 31st we will be meeting up around the intersection of I81/I66 in VA.
Stay tuned!
western ny rider here, would love to take part
I have received the baton from steezin and carried it north to Pennsylvania! a few more and better pictures im sure, will be coming soon from steezin. his camera has the hand off pic.
I rode 600+ miles in total today, Virginia is certainly a beautiful state. Even with the rain clouds :flipoff:-> weather :icon_twisted:
I rode through Gettysburg on my way to pick up the baton...

This is General John Beauford (not sure of spelling) there are four cannon surrounding the foot of the statue, the one pointing directly at the camera is THE cannon that fired the first shot at the battle of Gettysburg. the Lt. who fired that shot spent 25 years, after the war, searching for this cannon...identified by serial number.

Hehe two pictures there look as one and no photo chopping bwahahaha
With a sick gf at home I wasn't able to ride as far north as planned. Fortunately Oz was willing and able to ride the extra miles to keep the baton moving!!
I'll definitely come further north when the baton is making its way south again.
A little on the ride;
Strapped the baton on and started north. Got to the original meeting spot a bit early, but it worked out perfect. Sat inside a/c and watched a serious storm roll through. Banner/Baton are really great any weather combo! The first laminated banner's ink would have definitely run after all the rain its seen.

After the storm broke I had enough time to keep riding a bit further north, and we decided to move the meeting location to Natural Bridge VA. Ran into a little rain on the way.. Then was able to explore around while Oz was nearing in

Unfortunately you can only see the full effect of the bridge from a 45 minute walking tour. You actually drive/ride across it on the main road(rt11), but they have high fencing on both side. Next best shot was with the main sign.

It must have sneaked by me...I'm right outside of Baltimore.
I'm on the western side of the state, Erie Pa. I could grab it as well but it won't be heading north....more like west...
ok muffin man, id be willing to ride to new jersey motorsports park.... ive been wanting to check that place out hopefully during an event.
ah sorry ross. it will still have to go south after getting to the northeastern states.
ndlsjk perhaps you could grab it from a northern rider on its way south and meet me in pittsburgh with some other riders there... ill swing it back over to ross to carry south. i have family and friends in the burgh so id be glad to ride over there.
who knows what path it will follow....
There's a bike event happening this weekend, do ya think you'll be able to make it?
Sent from my fancy-ass smartphone
yes i can make it this weekend, what day is the event?
It's bike week in Ocean City.
The AMA roadrace is this weekend at NJMP. I'm going down but not taking the GS500. Hit me up if you go, so we can meet.
ill be heading down to njmp tomorrow morningish. ill hang there for a good deal of the day. come find me! i dont have a phone anymore sorry! if you are familiar with the place give me a location and time to meet you there.
i will have a Bilt brand backpack with the baton inside. if they wont let me in the park with the bag ill be on its perimeter somewhere.
{UPDATE} I will be leaving by 11:30. if you want to reach me now is the time.

Sent from my fancy-ass smartphone
meet today?
im going down there just cause i want to. so if you can meet let me know.
Bump!! I know its cold up that way, but lets keep this wheel moving. Maybe we can get the next meet set in stone before the start of next riding season?
Agreed. Although bike less since August 29, I'd like to see this keep moving.
my apologies everyone.... shortly after my trip to virginia i had to do my side cover gaskets and did a valve adjustment also. the bike was unridable. just to much oil leakage. also im very poor so getting everything necessary took some time.
so who is up for receiving the baton!!!!????
I suppose I should update the map a little bit...I moved to Wisconsin in December, and the GS500 will not be joining me here.
-Bump-
Any volunteers that wish to take the baton further north?
No worries oz! We knew it would slow down up north during the cold season. No need for a fellow twinner to brave the arctic temps we have brewing now, unless they want to! Check the map in the OG post, send a couple pm's to neighboring twinners. If you don't get any response for a while, keep us posted.
I may try and starting planning my moto trip for this summer. I am wanting to work towards the dream cross country ride, may warm my feet up on a north->south before adventuring on the east->west haul. We'll keep the baton moving once we get some bearable temps back
Hey guys, been away a while. No cold gear = no cold riding for me. OZ when you decide to head north let me know, I'm pretty much in Glassboro. Steezin, you Brew?
I will indeed ice. im not to keen on the cold riding either... soon as its warm ill get in touch
I'm just north of DC, if we get a warm weekend in February I could take it to NY or farther north.
Bump!!
Fellow gstwinners! The riding season has begun here in the north. Lets get this baton moving! Message me and wd can get this thi.g moving again.
Ice blue, you would be ideal for a meet. I wouldnt even have to get off my street (322) for a long while!
Anyone want to take the baton north?
Seems like the "sparkle" of the Relay has worn off haha. I'll dig into the map and try to dig someone north of ya up. If not, we'll just say screw them states and send it south! Next time I'm bored on the comp, I'll put together a google map showing the baton's travel thus far.
lol, so where is this thing? I'm in north nj by nyc trying to get involved in this.
Its in Pennsylvania IIRC... so anyone in New York, Connecticut, other New England States, etc... would be what we were hoping for, but it may have to head back south if no ones comes outta the wood work up there. In which case I'd imagine VA would be next. But Anon, NJ... you should be pretty close to meet up for sure regardless if it goes North South, depending on how much you'd like to travel with it. Go ahead an PM oz since he has it and you guys are pretty close.

Anon & OZ, keep me in the loop. If Anon doesn't bring it up, I think I can swing down and bring it up at least to NYC to for further excursions north. I was thinking about making my first long-ish trip Philly anyway. :thumb:
Yep its here in South eastern pa. Ill ride far to pass the baton off. Steezin can back that up. So Anon, would you like to take it to cWj? If not ill take it to him.
Take it together! Always fun to ride with others...

:dunno_black: cwj can grab it from pa and i can grab it from him and bring it north

That's what I was thinking. I'm in Staten Island - but I won't be able to do it immediately, thinking no sooner than first week of May  . If someone else beats me to it, you're welcome, but I think we can at least get it moving toward NE. I figure it's better to get it the upper states done in the summer.
Is there anybody further north than Mass to get in the game? Is Erika planning in northern border trips this summer?
Ok. Thats not too far off. I can sit on it for another week or so. It seems you and anon are in the same area perhaps we can all meet up for the hand off.

Hey guys, sorry haven't been on in a while, my brother was on leave from the Navy so priorities shifted. Did the baton make its way north already?
So trying to get this thing moving this weekend. Any of the Jersey riders able to meet up at some point this weekend? Original thought was to take it from OZ and head south to Cape May then up rt 9 or parkway.
The baton has moved to Jersey!(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g422/oz353/Mobile%20Uploads/20140622_115922_zpsc6de9bff.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/oz353/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140622_115922_zpsc6de9bff.jpg.html)
IceIVblue now has possession of the baton. he also has the pic of the actual handoff.
Ice...if you want someone to ride withyou to take it north let me know.
Congrats. Sorry I disappeared from the discussion but Pokey has been down for the count for a while with charging problems.
Onward and upward!
Due to photobucket issues ice asked me to post the handoff pic...

The prospective NNJ meet thread got me wondering - has the stick moved up yet?
Glad to see this is still happening. After my GS was sold in August 2013, I haven't been on for a while. Keep up the good work!
Who has the banner?
Just talked with Ice - Life always tends to take over, but he's still holding the banner and ready to get it moving again next season!
I have my GS back currently, but not sure if it'll still be around next season(can't decide to keep to sell again). I have another friend with a gs here that's offered to let me ride his if the banner gets within reach again.
Looks like we've made it north on the east coast, but numbers and members have shifted since the start.. Anyone willing and able still kicking around?
