I bought a low mileage 07 front rotor from Ebay last summer and it looked like brand new. Had an EBC rear I had purchased new years ago still in good condition and put it on at same time. Last winter the bike sat for a month or so and the EBC was completely rusty. The oem front still looked like new. They just don't seem to put as much nickel or chrome in the steel used for the EBC rotors. The rust cleans off with a little usage but still looks crappy where it doesn't wear.
I paid $50 for the 07 rotor from an Ebay top rated seller because it looked to be the best one. They had others for $30-40 in various conditions. If I need another rotor I'll go to Ebay again, the several items I bought last summer from top rated sellers were all in top condition.
So does this look like a good deal

That Ebay rotor I bought last year replaced one on my 02 I had used for over 90k miles and 9 years of year round riding and it looked almost as bad as the rusty EBC you pictured. Didn't replace it for looks, replaced because it was worn out. Before replacing it I had cleaned it up with a Brillo pad, fine steel wool with soap in it, and it looked pretty good.
I use to clean the rust from chrome parts like exhausts on my old Hondas with Brillo or SOS pads every spring and it worked great, never scratched the chrome. I've cleaned rusty things like the rotor, upper front frame, etc on my GSs too, not much chrome to need it though. :icon_lol:
Your pictured rotor looks like an OK deal I'd say if it was made for a GS500 although I'd rather find a low mileage used oem one I think.
By the way, sanding would scratch chrome and painted areas and I use those green kitchen pads to clean badly cruded up caliper pistons for example but they too scratch the heck out of chrome and painted things.
It is actually replacing the oem one on my bike i like the look of it and just cool upgrade
