Title: Buying gs750 motor to replace a 500?
Post by: Gs500e98 on May 21, 2013, 03:59:07 PM
I saw an ad where they have a gs750 motor and I am needing to replace my 500 would this work? Or will the motor be to big to fit into the bike? They only want 200 for the motor. I would finally be able to ride my gs finally lol

Im gunna go out on a limb here and say it wont fit.
The gs750 engine looks quite wide, would probably need serious frame modifications. :dunno_black:

mmm .. with enough elbow grease... back of beer coaster engineering sketches... head scratching.. alternative parts procurement ... yes sure you can get it in there!! ...

for a quick and easy plug and play experience.... ehhhhh not so much! ..

project bike wise ... you go hard!! ... post lots of pics ... make a video of when its running... yay!!  :thumb:

a 'streetfighter' forum would likely be a good place to ask around too... just dont forget us!! we need to see it happen  :D

I'm looking for a plug and play experience. I wish I had the know how but right now my gs500e is sitting in the garage with a torn up engine with the amount of money I'd have to put into rebuild engine I could of just bought a used engine just trying to find the right engine without paying a lot of money. eBay wants 700 avg or local pick up only. But I am determined to be riding this bike all over missouri and Illinois this summer. Thanks for the responses.

Well the lower part of the rod came disconnected the jugs need to be homed out pistons both broke on the piston skirt and have had many failed attempts on opening the lowerend to see what else is broken. I do have a manual but still can't figure out why I can't get it open.

Holy hell, that's a lot of damage.

The bonding material used to hold the cases together almost acts like a high strength glue. So if you're 100% sure you removed all the bolts (including above the oil pan and maybe inside the oil filter housing), then it just needs somegentle tapping / prying.

As far as other motors that will "fit": the other GS twins would be the closest to bolting right in (GS400, GS425, and GS450) . Anything other than a GS500 motor will take some work, but the smaller twins are your best bet.

Yeah I know right picked the whole bike up for 200 but if I can get it running for cheap that would be nice

3 secret bolts - been there, discovered that.

You have 2 in the area of the oil filter. These can be a real beeeech to get out. You can drill off the heads. Once open, you can easily remove the remaining bolt shaft and use new bolts.

The other one is UNDER the sump oil screen.

Oh, one other part. You must remove the clutch basket. There is a clutch part that bridges across the two halves of the case. Got to remove that, too, to get the case open.

Any ideas why it may be hanging up on that one side with the clutch basket?

You must remove the clutch basket. There is a transmission part that bridges the halves of the case. You have to remove that. To do it, you must remove the rest of the clutch basket.

Don't forget the 2 bolts in the oil filter area and one under the sump screen.

(Been there - last week! While scrapping out 2 motors.)

You have a spun rod bearing, my friend. Plan to replace the crank, rod, piston, and plan to inspect the cases for signs of damage.

dude, I havent seen that much heat damage on a big end in a while. Kinda awesome. I say find an old gs that is wrecked, something that runs, take motor + parts you need, part out other stuff. Theres no way to avoid spending money, so why not save some up and do it right, rather than trying to do something nutso on your only bike and getting balls deep in a project that may take your entire riding season to complete?
Or do it. I've done it, but i was cranky as all hell because i had no bike to ride.

Remember to keep an eye on your oil level.

Aye the only time you want a rod bent like that, or a piston demolished, is on a sculpture lol. ( working on one lol )
