Title: Snapped head bolt...
Post by: gsatterw on May 25, 2013, 02:16:31 PM
so, like an idiot, I read the Nm for the torque specs instead of the ft-lb for the head bolt and used 10 ft-lb instead of 7 ft-lb and, well, the damn thing snapped.

To be clear, i'm talking about the bolt that goes upside down on the front of the engine that ties the cylinders and head together.

So I'm pretty damn sure that I know the answer to this, but...would it be a horrible idea to just leave it in there and not get the broken piece out and not replace it? Would I end up with terrible oil leaks?

Thanks all,
sincerely stupid

Is it an inside or outside bolt?

Fwiw, they are usually pretty easy to fix. But it does require pulling the cylinder head.

well, I went ahead and took the head off, AGAIN (for the 3rd time, the first time to replace the base gasket, 2nd time I forgot the head gasket), and removed the broken bolt and replaced it with another from the hardware store. I had to saw the damn thing because it was took long. But it all fits. Gonna set the timing tomorrow.

Going to throw a fit if the damn thing leaks again.

Also...the first gasket kit I had came with aluminum crush washers. This was NOT ok. They ended up melting to the engine and deformed heavily, causing my base and head gasket to leak. Stick with copper. I'll check out what brand you need to avoid tomorrow.

Sad to say but that's how you learn. I don't know how many bolts i snapped and nuts i rounded before i got good at it. Best advice i can give is if you start to get pissed walk away and start again tomorrow. Nothing has ever gone good for me when Im passed and trying to work on something.
