Whats up all,
This is my first venture into the world of motorcycles. My dad started me with a 50cc when I was about 10 yrs old but I never went back. I promised myself I would but I never got around to it. With my 30yr old Bday looming I finally decided to put up or shut up. In search for a new bike I ran into a pretty cool little bike on craigslist. After looking at reviews, wikis and forums, and especially finding the very useful information on GSTWIN.COM, I was able to make up my mind. He was asking for 1200 but the bike was not even running. With tips from people on the forum I knew I could ask for less. After taking it in for a buyer's inspection the people at cyclebarn quoted me at least 600. I knew this was BS because I read how easily most people were able to get the bike running. I called my dad up and he said, "no way! We can do the fork seals and carb clean ourselves." After much back and forth I brought him down to 700 and walked off with my new bike.
Heres how it all started

Pretty beat up i know. The frame looked good but the bike had NOT been taken care of at all. My dad was especially sad when we got it back. He said to me, "ever since I had my first bike I always felt like they were alive or had feelings. Seeing them like this its like nobody cares about them."
After using the videos on this site to change the fork seals we started to clean the carbs and more. We finally reached a point where we had to open the engine. Luckily for me Adidasguy was checking out my inquiries and invited me down to his garage. Mind you this is a man I had never ever talked or met before this forum   .
He was incredibly gracious to invite me over and help me out however he could. We got there early morning and first thing we started going over was the electrical. Next we worked on getting the air box out and checking that. After that we checked the fuel lines and started to get in the nitty gritty. He recommended we add some gas and start her up. Incredibly she roared back to life!

After she fired up we worked on the valve adjustment. Soon the bike would be ready to rock and road worthy! Seeing as my gas tank had pinholes and dirt and more in it. Adidasguy hooked me up with another gas tank he had.
Also because it was my bday he throw in some ankle guards and I bought the chain guard as well. INCREDIBLY AWESOME. Thanks again Adidasguy!. Here are more pics of what proceeded.

I really made this post to just REALLY REALLY say thank you to Adidasguy for inviting a stranger from the area and give me so much awesome advice and help. He knew very particular details of the bike we had not even considered.
With his hours of help we got the bike running in about 5-6 hours. Now its just a matter of driving her around. A few bolt changes here and some cleaning of the rust and I will have a decent bike. THANKS again adidasguy. :thumb: :thumb:

He is a stand up guy here. i can attest to that. carb cleans/synchs are pretty easy. look hard but imho far from it.

Adidas is one hell of a guy. Hey i have some beat up rear plastics that i was planning on messing around with with fiber glass, but if you need them we could meet up at Patricks and throw em on. They will finely need a paint Job though.

Adidas had some extra plastics for the bike for me that brianrc was trying to get rid of apparently. Now i have a set of orange and blue. I am planning on making them both viable in the future. Just gotta order the decals and start paintin'..i could use tips on how to paint it if your willing to teach!
Yea Ill definitely help you out man. For starters your going to need 600 grit wet sand paper for base, and 1000 grit wet sand paper for clear. In no way am I the best painter, but those grits are just personal preference. You will need primer as well, and might as well order some 2k clear now and whatever color you feel like painting it (which more often than not is a tough choice).

The orange is fun but i have decided on the blue that it came with and Yellow. Cause its more flashy then the orange i have and less boring than the red!
You have a place you recommend to get the clear coat and colors? I am thinking since i am brand new rider i will wait until july 4th to look for sales. what do you think?
Good choices! Auto body paint and supply places don't really have sales much that I know of, but the place I go to get my paint that is rather local is Wesco paint and body supply. There is one in Burien, Renton, and I know there are a few others. They have rattle can 2k clear if that's what you are looking for. I don't know if you have a spray gun or not. They can also mix up color codes for you in a rattle can.
I think my dad has one. I am seeing him this weekend to get some riding in and also to get some ideas going for coloring one set of parts blue and another yellow. Question that maybe you konw the answer too. The vehicle was registered as blue in color. If i change it to another color can i be pulled over and cited/ticketed?

Not sure about your state, but in michigan they can give you a ticket. There is no fine or penalty involved, as long as you simply go to the DMV and pay for a new registration/ticket with a time period, like 10 days. Then take the new registration and ticket to be verified by any officer.
NIce write up! Applause! :thumb:
The coloring on the title in Washington State is not strict at all from my experience, and I have owned two motorcycles. Don't worry about that. When you visit your pops ask about a spray gun, it will make painting much easier and better quality.

No big deal on the color. When time to re-register then change the color. They're used to bikes changing color. The VIN is what matters. If you paint the frame, the VIN must remain visible.
Bikes change color all the time.
Have photos so if stolen, you can show what it looks like today.
ah alright. Just making sure im not pulled over on my first day riding haha

I rode bike with changed frame. registration was on older frame a 96. engine however was a 97 cause it was silver. so i could have caught hell for this. i did once. told them i had swapped parts over while frame was being repaired. they told me the truth was quite pleasant about it, saying its a registration violation. be careful. colourwise dont worry too much. Just say decided to change color. VIN is the key here.
oh nothing like that. Literally just gas tank and fairings. I willk eep that in mind though. I might hit up DOL and let them know.

Wow really? I never knew that.
Gorilla welcome man, I am new here myself but this is such a great community its hard to not want to hang around! Lots of good members and I also bumped into Adidasguy almost immediately on these forums, great guy.
Keep the thread alive with the progress. It seems these threads with picture updates are always well received.
Here there is a color, but no one inspects that. You can title a bare frame with no wheelas or motor.
Motors for bikes are not on the registration.
Mileage for most bikes is exempt.
Frame VIN is on the title. as is color, but as I said color doesn't matter much. When you buy new tabs, you can indicate a color change if you want to.
Title has color. Your yearly registration does not have color! I just looked at some of mine. It has make & model, no color.

I should mention that my info may not be accurate for bikes. I know it is for cars, but looking at the titles for both of the bikes here, the "color" fields are blank.
more pics to add as progress changes.

Now I gotta find ANOTHER day to be able to paint it the real colors.
I ordered some suzuku symbols/decals to add under the clear coat.
time to start cleaning misc parts and get this thing looking right!
Paint booth looks awesome! I just met Patrick recently myself, what a guy! My bike is a gas tank away from being on the road, and I'm looking to do paint on it and my tail, I'll have to find time I grab a beer with you in the near future and talk shop :)
I'm in Seattle, btw.
Bike is looking great!
right man of course. Once i do the next layer ill post those pics up. First time doing it luckily my dad has most of the tools and a little bit of experience.

The only problem is we were getting orange peel. We sanded it down with 2000grit sandpaper to let it become smoother and all was well.

Wrinkle: incorrect flash time between coats. The prior coat has a hard, dry surface and the under part was still wet. New coat softened and wrinkled the top coat which then slid on the wet paint under it. Only solution is let it dry and sand it off. Prevention would have been shorter flash time or much longer so the stuff under it would have been dry and hard. Other possibility would have been to dust the next coat a few times before going at it with a hard, full blast of paint.
Temperature is a factor: too cold or not enough solvent and paint won't flow. Too hot and it drys before it has a chance to flow. Sometimes too much solvent and it bubbles out. Sometimes you just can't win. :dunno_black:
Did I loan you "How to Paint your Motorcycle"? That covers orange peel, wrinkles and other problems in detail. If I didn't, you might be able to buy an on-line edition if you check Amazon. Or stop by and borrow it.
(Oh, and don't feel bad: been there. Done that. Sanded it all back off. and more than once, too. :icon_rolleyes: )

I actually liked it!
once the decals and clear coat is on. next im going to start cleaning parts. probably bring over some too addy. get a clean and dirty bin going.
He he ... when you paint the shock I like to paint the spring and top eyelet the same color as the frame (silver/black/charcoal whatever) and the body collar and retaining clip the color as the bike.
I have a couple shocks I did. In fact I have a few shocks I powdercoated the body the color of the bikt (blue) but of course that means you need to have an openable shock ... katana, GS etc shocks wont do, GSXR and a few others ... I modded this bugger from an non openable open to an openable one. The KTM fork leg I got @ the junkyard came in handy for that.
Cool.
Buddha.
Let it cure before putting on a 2k clear coat. You don't want soft paint under the clear that won't ever dry out.
Take your time. Don't be in a rush.
the white coat has been on since sunday. We let all this week for it cure. clear coat goes on tomo!
Looking good already ....cant wait to see the end result
If you got dry (non humid) and warm weather it will cure a lot faster.
In any case, you are not using one of those Poly-urethane paints ? If so, they need you to be done with all painting in 18 hours. They somehow sorta cure by doing some type of epoxy type base and hardener BS.
Of course I have also had epoxy not set before ... so no clue.
Cool.

Thanks!
My dad has a monster 696 and the engine and head are almost the exact same colors. I figured Ducati knew what they were doing so I tried to emulate those colors so as to be subtle. It turned out perfect. Subtle enough to not draw away from the paint scheme but still cool enough to stand on its own.
WHERE IS SUMMER!

Summer is basically here man!! Sucks I wasnt there to see it get finished, but glad I could at least help a little bit. You gunna be over there Sunday? I might come over and we could go for a little ride.
If Sunday is nice, I suggest Vashon Island. I am so up for that.
I might be able to do that, if we get an early start. I'm gunna be taking the bike over the mountains this week lol
Can do. Then do your basic maintenance after we get back and you're ready to go over the mountains.
That is straight up beautiful, man.

I bawled. an awesome tribute. lets all karma Patrick repeatedly. he deserves it
dropped the bike Saturday.
Driving along following my GPs and I missed a turn. At the last second I saw a dirt road and it looked fine, so I turned in.
sadly it was not fine it was bumpy and gravely. I dropped the bike on the left slide going like 5mph.
ALL DAMAGE was absorbed by R&G bar ends and the Frame Sliders
THANKS AGAIN PATRICK!!!!

he told me he doesn't normally like colors altered from stock but he said he thought the colors looked good. With his help the engine is running awesome. I definitely enjoy that much more considering it was his last project with me.
Sucks you crashed, but see it was on illegal gravel now wasn't it ...
BTW your bike with a broght red frame and a less bright white body is what I call "negative paint bike" ...
Cool.

Yes sir the color combo was my choice. It was based off my dads ducati monster. Turned out good!
