Title: Hard break-in
Post by: ralph13 on May 30, 2013, 04:32:24 PM
What do you think of the "Motoman Method", when it comes to breaking in a new engine?

Makes some sense. But it is really light on data.

Everyone seems to think hard break ins are good for the engine. I'm on the fence, but I guarantee if I bought a bike new and my warranty was voided if you did a hard break in, I'd definitely go by the book.

This is not anything new. I was always told not to baby a break-in. Even told so my a Suzuki mechanic. But maintain the rev limits.

In a bike with no tach, unlike the GS, I bet a hard break-in would be very risky.

anyone with any type of knowledge of how a motor sounds when revving can tell the difference in running a motor to hard or not.  If you break the motor in light you don't get high compressor in the cylinder and the compression in the motor is what forces the rings out and seats then in the cylinder.  My quad motor was broke in at the track.  Its the only way to break them in.  Baby it now pay for it down the road when you hammer on it.  Hammer on it now (within reason) and your set.  The biggest thing is to not hold steady RPM's and make sure the motor is up to temp before you start break in.  I always do 3 heat cycles then the bike goes to get hammered on.  I usually do break in on short track so that your not winding out the motor and your up and down in the gear box and rpm range with no sustained rpms.
