Last night me and my friends decided to take this road in Mt. Baldy at 10:30 at night. Its pitch black outside and ive never been on the road before. My friends are going pretty fast and im trying to keep up with them until i hit this really sharp turn and spill out into the dirt. It was only a 5 ft tall mound of dirt that kept me from going over the edge, which is a dead drop of about 30 ft :icon_eek: I managed to walk away with a couple scrapes and bruises and a minor concussion but my bike (AKA the one thing i love most in this world) got screwed, hard. A rock took out the left transmission cover and the safety switch attached to the clutch is no longer functional. Learned a good lesson here, dont try to keep up with your friends, dont drive crazy roads at night, and dont ride hard on roads you dont know :thumb:
Heres a couple pics

although i REALLY REALLY dislike this happening to you im glad you posted it for those moments when I think imma ride faster than i SHOULD!...Good luck to you fixing this bad boy up again!
Crikey Jim!! ... Glad you upright and talking after the off! ...
You've just had your first crash course in rider safety!!!! :icon_rolleyes: ;)
hahaha yeah like im surprised im even alive. i decided to post this cause i want others to know what happens when you get cocky and do dumb stuff. Imagine what it feels like to get up and while ur in shock u look over the 30 ft edge and think shaZam!!!! I ALMOST DIED!! :icon_eek: But i just now ordered the new casing and gasket for it so it should come in like in a couple weeks MAX. Btw i think this is a great time to say that if you decide to get a bluetooth for your helmet, get the SENA bluetooth headset for your helmet. I straight up banged my head on the bluetooth side hard enough to knock me out for 5 min and it still works!!! :D
Would frame sliders have prevented this? I know my G/fs bike has them on there- stick out a good 3" off the fairing so I'd expect they would..
Frame sliders may have prevented the engine damage or reduced it to a little rash after the engine bars got ground down. Engine bars absolutely.
You can never predict what will happen in a high speed low side.
Low speed tips & knock downs the frame sliders or engine bars would save the engine and the front fairing.
Yeah .. Many moons ago I lived for couple years in Tasmania, had a S-Pac Ford XF sedan ... Had the growly zorst , had the wide tyres , had the factory 'sports' suspension ....... Had the urge to be a fool :icon_rolleyes: ... Long straight downhill with a sweeping left hander onto a short 30m straight leading onto a big bridge ... Been over the road lots in the previous 6 months ...
160km/h down the hill, touch of brake and change down to 3rd, round the 85km/h (suggested speed) corner at about 145km/h ... Kinda forgot the early morning road would be damp .. Right side tyres onto the centreline ..... See ya later!!! .. 3 spins out at a 45deg right angle... Ass up into some light sapling trees ... Wait for dust to settle...
Get out dukes of Hazzard style cos door was jammed with 3" tree trunks.... Check wheels still on and straight.... Peer under car for any obstruction .... Get the adrenalin shakes and stop for a ciggie ... Looked behind car into trees and think wow I nearly went right through this small grove!! .. Look other side of grove ... 70ft drop into the edge of river where big ass granite jaggy rocks line the shore... Think about it and have a spew while images of flaming movie car wrecks flashed through my head ... Back into car and lucky to ease it out of the trees with only some extra scratches ....
Drove home and inspected further.... Couple minor dings to the rear bumper, lots of scratches down both sides .... Think the young trees acted a bit like a bungee/safety net and slowed me without major impact damage ...
Drove most sedately for a few months on that road.... Got a mental cringe every time around same corner and saw the gap in the saplings... And the big drop behind... About 6 months later the local cop saw me in the petrol station .. "Well now mate! , you a lucky boy! , and you have slowed down a bit eh!" .... After a few mins conversation I found out he lived in a house other side of bridge, was sitting on his porch having a morning cuppa and watched it all.... Never came over and charged me... Said he could see I was not hurt... Apart from pride ... And figured the scare would sort me out a bit.... Also said if he had seen me continue to be a fool he would have had something to say immediately ... He was one of the old school country cops ... Hard but fair :thumb:
Hey, Janx101ie, got any more exciting, interesting, riveting, absorbing, unique, genuine, true, relevant Australian stories like this for us? Maybe you could just email them to yerself and cut out the GS500 Forum middleman? Just a wee suggestion for ya on a Queen's Birthday weekend.
Hey, got any stories about the Queen? Bet ya have, you've got stories and comments about everything......
And on a totally helpful note, spend a few minutes here reading about Obsessive Posting Disorder -

Another thing i forgot to add was that right before we got to this particular road, there was a sign clearly posted that said "NO RECKLESS DRIVING", so another piece of advice, dont laugh as you pass up a sign like that like i did :icon_lol:

i am actually gonna be investing my money in some engine bars, so two questions Adidas! 1. can you fit frame sliders and engine bars at the same time on an 06 gs500f thats naked, and 2. where would i get engine bars that would fit?
Normally can't do both but wouldn't need both.
Nicest looking engine bars are SW Motec.
next would be old OEM and then would be Renntec.
You'll have to google to see who has them right now.
When you find them, you can include a link and we will let you know if the right thing and price is OK.
You may have to order from Germany or the UK.

I expect so ... But as I have the individual on ignore it doesn't really matter... I did glance at one of them ... Had a quiet chuckle...
Ignore/block is handy ... First time I've bothered to use it... If the 'wee child' want to rant ... It's not bothering me anymore :dunno_black:
You see, the guy still has to post. He canna help himself. Reckon he must be the most boring poster in the whole entire world. And what's even worse, he's giving the Aussie bikers a bad name with his stream of consciousness input. Jeeez, if you had a thread about plastic dog poop he'd be the first up with an opinion and a hero story.
And, despite, his most recent story about blocking, he's still watching! Gotchcha!
Eh Jim.... Just a general question... Were you close enough behind your mates that they noticed/saw you spill? .... Or did they notice after a short time and loop back?
Been on a number of group rides and its always a concern if there are 'new to area/road' riders in there... Personally I prefer to ride at the back .. Gives more clues as to any hazards ahead...
And I gotta ask .... When you spilled it ... Did you get any of the 'whoa almost in slo-mo' effect? ... Like you know it's real time ... But your brain kinda goes into warp speed ... And you still have time to think 'is there any faint chance to save this' ...
With the car thing and a couple truck lay downs over the 'career' I've noticed it a little... Nothing serious on the bike yet "thanks to Odin and the Gods" ... I always thought it was a Hollywood effect thing ... Its freaky!

Hey noworries, pull your head in champ. I dont care what your problem is with Janx here but hes a valuable member and I enjoy his rants as do quite a few of us. :thumb:
Thanks Cods.. But let it slide eh? ... Blocked is blocked ...
I don't always rant! ... Sometimes I keep it short! ... Sometimes! ...
And noworries, now that I have seen the cesspool of your angst yet again... Don't mean them to be hero stories ... It's just stuff that happened... I reply to people as I see fit ... Try to identify with what happens to people and relate to it... It's part of making friends ... Or not! ... I stopped changing who I am to please people decades ago... Rather be hated for who I am than liked for who I ain't! .. Btw ... This may help you too... You don't want to see my long posts that annoy you so much .... Use the ignore function! .... Easy ... If your going to ride that hard on the street, pick up more protection for yourself. You can always replace the bike. Your body...not so much.

My friend was in a car and was doing his own thing. He didnt notice until like a mile after i crashed. And YES!!! i did do the slo mo thing except i did it in a badass way like daredevil or something cause i knew i was gonna crash so i slammed the back brake, lifted my left leg up to the seat, and "surfed" it into the wall  like a total badass!!!

Oh and a Nod for the story appreciation .. The main point of it was I know how lucky you can feel after a near miss of your own creation ..
You know the saying "never drive/ride faster than your guardian angel can fly ?? ... Mine has had to be pretty fleet of wing a few times... :icon_rolleyes: ... And has a odd sense of humor sometimes too.. ;)
Sorry, Fry, Janxie topic now closed. If he really wants to persist in making a dork of himself (was that really 9 posts today?) after his Aussie mates here trying to give him a bit of a helping hand like, well what can be said. It's just all over, rover, and time for bed.
I have ridden Mt Baldy a few times, I always get really nervous near that bar/restaurant right before that bridge going up the mountain. Always think some fool is going to come flying out of that lot and not see me. Glad you were not injured too bad, bet you drive within your limits for a bit now ;) My only issue with my GS is the braking, I cannot count how many times I have come up on stopped traffic or a signal with the rear locked up weaving like a snowboarder to avoid a wreck. Damn speed addictions are tough to beat. Hope you get her back on the road soon..
So Janx posted 9 posts in a single day! WTF Janx, you must have blisters on your finger from all that posting (NOT!)
Mr Noworries why are you so worried about what the heck Janx is doing, what are you his momma?
I do love the way you California boys butt in to an Australian training programme intended only to save Janxie from himself.
Jazus, now I'm posting too much. Goodnight.
More front brake, Cal. The GS is too light to use rear brake all the time. I hardly ever use rear brake at all, and I'm not just saying that. Heck, I pretty much only use rear brake when already stopped at a light... Just tap it when another car comes up behind to make sure they see me, and to already have one foot off the ground for a faster get away if needed.
Anyway. Someone posted something about keeping up with other folks and not feeling comfortable. Seems like it might have been an Aussie... Slips maybe? Not for sure but it was several months to a year ago and I can't find the thread. It was a really good write up on his thoughts about a really stressful group ride that tested his limits when he wasn't ready, and really made him reflect on how he rode. It definitely stuck in my mind, and made a difference in how I rode with others. Fry should have a read on that, as well as many others in light of the riding season and downed rider threads. Just can't seem to find it!
Anyone know or who can provide a link?

I am afraid the front end will slip, I do not trust the tiny contact patch these old tires have and would rather skate the rear than the front :)
On my other bikes I always had wider tires and better brakes, I can barley remember locking up the tires at all on my Interceptor. I think its a combo of too much gut and not enough tire ;)
Ohgood, your comment about helmets isn't even close. That's garbage. It's common, good, sound advice to learn how to use your damn front brake! 70/30 front/rear taught in every MSF course. I was just making a point that I'm even more extreme and hardly use the rear. Don't take my words out of context or put words in my mouth.
I generally appreciate your comments in here as you are blunt and to the point, but I feel you missed the point I was trying to make. To say my comment is in the same field as your comparison is simply glib.
Cal, I understand where you are coming from, and i would probably do the same with old tires. Didnt realize thats ehat you were on. But that wont stop me from telling you to get new tires, bro! I rode for a week in old tires and experienced the front slide out a little on gravel. I didnt go down but scared me into new tires the very next day.

If u have been up baldy then u might know the road known as GMR (Glendora Mountain Route). Thats the road i took that made me crash, and it also has a high fatality rate (which i found out AFTER i crashed). Do not go up there unless its day time btw cause its extremely hard to see at night.

call it whatever you like, get offended if you like, its still wrong to suggest anyone, anywhere use only one end of the braking system.
nothing was added or taken out of context. you said the gs is too light to use the rear brake. that's wrong. period. then you fortify it with your own incorrect day to day usage. where does more wrongs make a right ?

Bboy, in this case, twas my rear brake that saved my life. If i didnt lock up the rear tire and power slide that beast then i wouldve missed the dirt mound and gone over the edge (50ft drop...maybe more). I was going too fast to be able to stop myself with the front brakes. It really all comes down too how well you can crash safely (bit of irony in that phrase?)
What have I stumbled upon here? Ouch that sucks you crashed mate. Glad your mostly ok and the bike is repairable. I learnt the same lesson as well don't worry, your not the first and you won't be the last just be glad your in one piece

I believe the accident happened and the drop was lethal, but I don't believe the mountain is growing. I'd like to see a pic looking over the edge! Gnarly story tho

Sorry for the slip up in distance. Its only a rough guess cause im not too good at distance measuring without a ruler and it was also at night and i had a minor concussion at the time. Once i get my bike up and running again im gonna go back up there (slowly this time) and take a pic of the dirt mound, my savior, and the drop. :)

Alright just got back from GMR with some pics. One of them is me on the hill that saved me, another is the oil spill i left, and the last 2 was the drop! Once i saw the drop in daylight i nearly shat my pants! WAY over 30-50 ft!! i dont know if you can tell in the picture but this was like about 300+ at least!

cant really see the drop, but judging by the slopes of the surround mountains and hills your one lucky bastard :thumb:
yeah there were a couple bushes in the way but it was quite a huge drop! And the speed i was going i wouldve for sure died! :icon_eek:
Wow, Frylock... How many lives you think you used up on that one?!
Fry, my comment about rear brake was really directed toward Cal and his skids to stop... But that's more about his tires than anything else, and I did not know about that beforehand. You are right about your case, front brake could have killed you... Possibly caused a high side vs the low side in which you experienced.
Ohgood, after re reading through the posts, I have decided we probably wouldn't even be arguing if this wasn't actually a conversation over the Internet. I didn't mean that the GS was too light for rear brake at all, that's just silly. I don't care to continue to try and validate myself or prove anything. Again, it's hard to convey what we really mean to say sometimes over the internet, so it's possible I was in error with how I wrote something. But I also can't help how another reads my comments.
Apologies for any perceived negligence folks.

Yeah so far i had 2 crashes. Got hit by some old guy wearing an oxygen tank, which was actually my fault cause he was driving slow and i was being impatient, but this recent crash gave me a lot of clarification on how i should ride

dude, there's no 'possible error' to it !
when you say "the bike is too light to use the rear brake" you can completely help how another rider reads it. it's right there, bad info, typed plain as day.
if you can't own it completely and learn from it, that's on -you-, not the new rider that interprets what you typed. take responsibility, learn, ride, and pass on the GOOD information you can. that's how we learn to make the very best out of these crap bikes, crap roads, TOTALLY CRAP car drives, and everything in between.
the OP posted up his near death experience (look at the pics!) and shared the realities of what riding motorcycles can be. at least share GOOD information instead of biker cliches like "too light of a bike" or "had to lay er down".
the internet, typing, and 'maybes' have nothing to do with it. improve the community, teach and learn. :thumb:

I did a vlog about it talking about both my crashes. But lessons from here I learnt in my second crash. What thread and what did I talk about?
Haha, it may not have been you then. Someone did a post about how they were in a group ride, and was trying to keep up. Talked about how every turn made him push his limit. He didn't go down, but it made him reflect hard on his riding. Bugging the mess out of me that I can't find it!

And this is another reason I don't do group rides, won't do 'em. I have enough trouble keeping up with myself.

If your going to ride that hard on the street, pick up more protection for yourself. You can always replace the bike. Your body...not so much.

Ya know after looking into these things I would be a bit leary of actually wearing one. If you have a situation that they work in as designed they seem very cool but being that the teather requires more than 60Lbs of pressure to go off I could see it keeping you teathered to the bike on a low side and actually pulling you into a nice hot metal thing with spinning wheels of death instead of letting you seperate from the bike. Also if they go off while you are already on the ground I can see them propelling you against an object that you might not otherwise have had contact with or into the air and over that 5ft mound that saved Jim from going over the ever increasing height cliff that he avoided.
BTW Jim love your avatar, RIP Dime!

If the group pressures you to keep up with them, you're riding with the wrong group.

Agreed. I feel safer in a group ride incase something happens.
i think that we can all agree that although this area may have been my grave, it is quite beautiful! Much like a marriage, it can be beautiful but it can also be your doom :icon_lol: :D
bockinbboy just sent me a very sincere and unneeded apology via pm.
