Title: #2 MOD done - DIY Timing Advance
Post by: conradvr on January 15, 2004, 12:26:23 AM
Well I have now completed the second mod to the '96 GS (1st was front progressive srpings and 15W oil).  Using a round file that fitted into the original mounting holes this mod took less than a half and hour.  Just followed instructions available on the web, removed the plate and filed the mounting holes.

I did do a few things different to the instructions on the web.  Before removing the plate I used a hammer and old screwdriver to mark the plate's orientation insitu.  I then filed the mounting holes into slots and then measured and made a new marking on the plate that would give me the +5 degrees.  When I refitted the plate I simply lined up the new mark with the markings on the mounting plate and tightened the screws (I replaced the original screws with allen head types).

The result  - she does seem a bit more responsive and for the little time and effort it took to do (and free $$ if you don't replace the screws) I vote this as been well worth the effort.

Happy riding
Conrad

Take a look at the rotor. If it has 12-28 stamped on it, then you have the total 17 degrees timing with the mod.
If it has 5-35 on it, then you have 10 degrees and could go 7 more.
The problem is, the plate can't be rotated far enough for the extra degrees.
That's when a modified rotor can help.

You did the do-it-yourself advancer mod exactly the way it should be done   :thumb:

Yeah, I'll have to add this to my web page, good idea.

Just remember to retard the timing plate to stock marks before setting the crank timing marks when checking valve lash.

She had the 12-28 as she is an Aussie spec bike so I am at the 17 degrees.  Also thanks a million for the info on the DIY rotor mod - after looking at this DIY mod I went this route as:
1. this one is easily reversable.
2. my mate wasn't too keen on doing the rotor mod without a K&N unit to work against.

Cheers
