Hi guys, a GS n00b here. I picked up a 2006 GS500Fwith 5k miles for $500.
The previous owner took the carbs, fuel hoses and vacuum hoses off about a year and a half ago and then never finished whatever it was he was going to do.
In any case, I have the bike now and cleaned and replaced some gaskets in the carbs. Set the floats to the proper height and checked the fuel height. I drilled out the air fuel mixture caps and set them to two turns out (the left one wasn't even one turn out and the right was two out).
So now I got the thing running but for some reason when I give it gas it stays at whatever RPM it got to. So if I give it gas and it hits 4000 rpm it stays there. The only way to bring it down is to turn the bike off. If I then restart it it sits at about 1200 rpm. Give it gas and it does the same thing.
I have lubed the cables and checked them. They return as they are supposed to.
Only thing I can think of is maybe a vacuum leak. Any other ideas? Do you need more info?

could a tiny crack in the intake boot keep it from idling back down?
Yes. Search "hanging idle".
