Title: New battery...
Post by: GSJeff on January 15, 2004, 06:38:47 AM
Hi all, quick battery question... I got a new battery in for my GS and the instructions say "Fill battery with electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) of specific gravity indicated to UPPER LEVEL.  The sheet says that the specific gravity of the battery is 0.7.  When they say upper level, is that the MAX line typically?  Also, can I purchased electrolyte at Walmart or any motorcycle shop??

Thanks for the help, first time with a fresh battery like this.....

You bought a mail order batter, and it didn't come with acid. OK auto parts stores will sell you acid. dont bother with that .7 or whatever. They have acid that is about the right strength. So do bike stores. Walmart has batteries and they sell them with a container of acid. Enough acid for a batter and a 1/2.
Cool.

I fill to the upper line, and then wait like a few mins, shake it etc and see if the level goes down and then if so fill it back to the max. Bubles and air get trapped sometimes.
Cool.

And then charge it before you put it in the bike.

They can't ship the acid. that's why the battery is dry. You will never get a battery with acid (in battery or separately) through mail/ups/etc.
