Title: Another 'Bike wont start' thread
Post by: stuart576 on June 09, 2013, 09:23:14 AM
So my bike, she has been great lately, allowing me to enjoy this fine British weather in all it's glory.

Until today, today she won't start. My first thought was that I had accidentally put my heated grips on (which I wired directly to the battery, because I am lazy).

Anyway on attempting to start the relay clicks and there is a whirring noise (which I assume is the starter motor) yet nothing else, I have tried with choke and without, sidestand/centerstand up and down, and it is not in gear (otherwise the starter motor would not work?). So I assumed that the battery was fine although I put it on charge for a few hours for good measure.

Still nothing, so I give in and bump start it (what an effort ay?) and it fires up fine I leave it running for 10 mins and go for a ride (about 20 miles). Anyway I get home, turn the bike off and attempt to start again, and I'm back to the same problem.

As far as I can see it is not the battery that is a problem. The bike runs fine if bump starts so it's not the spark plugs HT leads ETC. I am pretty stumped as to what it is, could it be a starter motor issue?

Also I tried jump starting it with my car, no luck.

Sounds like starter to me, I am not familiar with the GS starter but its sounds like the starter gear is not catching the flywheel and the starter motor is just spinning.

Thanks guys, watched the video, exactly my problem, I have just spent the past couple of hours taking apart/putting back together and have tightened that loose bolt, all is good.

The knowledge on this forum is second to none, thanks again guys.  :)
