Title: 07 GS500F shutsdown, no power, WTF???
Post by: MidTennRider on June 16, 2013, 04:29:02 PM
So I was riding down the highway and my 07 GS500F shuts down. It starts to rain. There is no power at all. Its not the battery, cause it is piratically new and has been on trickle charger when not running. It has plenty of fuel in the tank. It will not jump start. Help????

accidentally hit the kill switch on right bar?... short in the kill switch? ....short/faulty sidestand relay ? ... loose sidestand so it hangs down a little and lets the relay go?...

plenty of fuel? ... just asking .. 'because you can hear it/see it sloshing around?' , tried it on reserve or prime?.... the reserve level is really around 5 litres/1.3 gallons on most models (except 'california' i think).. which catches a LOT of people out .. including me a few times early on! ..

hopefully its something simple like the above  :thumb:

No power to anything at all when key is on.

Go replace the fuse on the RHS of the bike behind the rear plastic

the fuse under the rubber/plastic cover under the seat?.. not the one that sits out in plain sight (thats a spare)

dead battery or loose/corrosion connections to battery? .. yes even though its been on a tender .. batteries can have a mind of their own  :icon_neutral:

loose/damaged wire in or under key barrel wiring? ..

no power to anything including lights (as i read it) .. 'mostly' means ignition circuit gremlins .. main fuse to start with and then a wiring issue...

you mentioned rain... it stopped in the rain?... or started raining while you were stopped (to add to your woes) ?

possibly water got into somewhere and killed it... though bikes are in weather all the time and dont do this.. so exposed wiring and water made a short?.... any 'extras' on your bike?... usb plugs? , heated grips? , charging plugs?

+1 to this. Sounds like you blew the fuse.

Ok now that I had some free time to check on this. I unsecured the plastic around the fuse, sure enough. It was blown.

Now I have some power, but will not turn over.

Got it running, had to put it on the charger for a little while. It hadn't been on the trickle charger since it stopped running. Thanks to all, with the help!!   :D
