ok so the other day i took my stock exhaust off straight piped my back and put a muffler tip on it so im riding down the road and i see oil coming out my cap im almost home so i try and make it there i succeed so the next day i leave to get oil and my bike makes a weird ticking noise and wont go over 50 i get going a lil ways and it sounds like a hammer is in my engine hitting back and forth it cuts off and i glide to the side of the road i take my oil cap off and its bone dry i start it up again and it still sounds like a hammer hitting back and forth in my engine any advice its an 05 gs500f

expect the engine boys be along soon... but... even hammer? .. .like while it is turning over... is it regular?... or just all messed up and uneven beat? ...

that type of hammer noise in a car engine i would think crank/bearings/rods .  :icon_sad:

Hammer sound can be the counter balance bearings going out (err, gone by now).
I had it happen to Junior. It really sounded like a hammer hitting in the case. Loudest on the lower front where it is located.

I suppose it also might be a broken rod or piston.

Probably open it up just for the experience and be prepared to buy a new engine.

I might, too late, say that you should not have started the engine when the oil was bone dry.
No oil is about the only way you can kill a GS500 engine.

When you say you saw oil coming out of the cap do you mean the oil filler cap? Was it loose? You should have stopped right away to check it and tighten it. Running an engine low on oil is a recipe for a blown engine, tough lesson to learn..
Of course if there was so much pressure in the crackcase that it was blowing out somewhere else or even at the cap then you might have had a broken ring, piston or burned a hole in a piston or cam issue and it was going to go anyway.

yeah something I learned the hard way on my old ninja 250. these small engines will be destroyed if little to no oil is in the engine. you can get away with a bit in a car however. not sure if its worth repairing but definitely worth opening it up and trying to rebuild it. depending if its easily available just swap in a used engine.

Straight pipe ? hammering noise ? you think he broke a valve ?
I have had Idiot #1 do that to a savage.

If you have cold air enter the head when you shut it off you will warp or bend a vlave. That will cause it to break off when you start it up.
Of course I have never ever seen it happen on a GS, even when Davipu cut it off 6" before the Y part and ran it east coast to west coast and back in the span of 2 weeks.
I also am not sure the my Idiot friend had that as the primary reason ... he was sucking air in the vaccum fitting in teh carb, and had a hacked off exhaust on his savage and I met him years after he had broken it.

Cool.

IMHO this is an old wives tale (Is that the proper term there?)

Supposedly the theory is that cold air will warp the valve stem on the exhaust valve because it causes it to cool to quickly, I personally have run open headers on far too many engines in my lifetime and have never had an issue. Heck I have even ran open heads on an engine once and the only thing that happened was an engine compartment fire. I used that same engine in a different hot rod and ended up blowing the bottom end and not the top end. The closest I have heard of anything like this happening is to a friend of a friend's boat, but that was caused by a faulty water cooled exhaust that sucked in water and warped a head and possibly a few valve stems in the process. Again JMHO..

Well how often do you redline your bike? As you mentioned in the ideal engine speed thread.

My sugesstion is to go buy a repair manual, buy /borrow the tools listed then get wrenching.

Unfortunately there will be no easy fix for what you have described aside from complete engine replacement. Incedentaly replacing the engine is likely to be the cheapest way to go. Check the for sale section often and start scouring junk yards and bike breakers.

Its an old buddhist tale ... he he.
The easiest way to warp a valve is to have a header leak or a header crack ... I had a volvo with that problem ...

bottom line, if stuff is banging around in the crankcase, it's really, really bad news. Hate to break it to ya, but unless you are a professional mechanic, you should probably replace the engine. Even a professional mechanic would probably realize that it would be much, much easier and less hassle to go ahead and replace it. Start saving, if you're lucky, you can find a decent engine for around $300 in a 500 mile radius.

Yeah, cheaper to buy and replace with a used than to try to rebuild.

Straight and shortened, increased/reduced diameter pipes/headers effect the scavenging rate, to much/not enough exhaust gets drawn out during the overlap, and too much air can get drawn in, this can screw up the A/F ratio of the charge and can cause lean running, lean running increases combustion temperature and can cause valves to overheat and fail.

Ever wondered why a rejet is often needed with an after market pipe?

I'm also in Jacksonville (by the Avenues Mall). If you need a hand replacing your engine, I may be willing to help depending on the time frame of things. I will have a garage at my new apartment at the end of next month that would make things a lot easier for wrenching.

I would go ahead and scrap the old one. There is probably way too much internal damage to try and salvage anything. You can find them for pretty cheap I'm told.

If you got banging noise even if its a broken valve you still need to rebuild the bottom end ... why ... your bottom end bearings have got beat up with the valve stuck in the piston and hammering the head ...

BTW does your spark plug look like its been beat to hell ... dead giveaway valve broek off ... you also can look in the plug hole and look for busted bits of metal.

Engines can be had if you watch ebay and CL.
Over the past I have had engines for free ("...just get it out of here I'm moving"), $200 (failed rebuild), $300 (parted out) and other prices. You have to be patient. If you want it NOW you may have to pay extra - up to $700.

One source for engines is a failed project or crashed bike.  Watch local ads and C.L. Use a variety of search terms. It can be "gs500", "gs500F", "gs500e", "gs-500", "gs 500", "gsxr500" and others.  People call them different things.

I am surprised no one has addressed the water issue. Does your pipe have a drain hole? If not, did you run the engine before you noticed that your exhaust was full of water?

Bummer about the engine bud. As if you needed another person to say it, I agree with looking for a new engine. A swap isn't nearly as hard as a tear down. Less time consuming and also, usually cheaper.

IF ...... It were a broken valve, you would have pull the head, check it and the piston and see the damage. If it's a bearing, replace the engine IMO

No harm in asking the shop, but it seems unlikely unless you have a warrantee.

Have you tried re-filling the oil to the proper level and starting the bike again? Chances are the engine is toast if you ran it dry, but if its already dead you might as well try.

buy an engine from ebay for 3-400, and laugh when you upload the video to youtube. its a learning curve, you found the rise !
